I've looked into the law around rental deposits once more, and it seems like the interest is actually significant I might be looking at a ~$150 cash infusion here, though I'll have to call some legal experts to make sure I do everything by the book, and for that matter make sure it does definitely apply to my situation

scent is a lot of the issue, if you can familiarize them with each other's scent and mix it a bit keep the kitten in its own room for a couple days and not romping all over old cat's territory, they'll both be curious enough to figure out what's going on from relative safety without scary encounters
take a hand towel or clean cloth and rub the old cat with it a bit to get his scent and then rub kitty with it, and vice versa, as a next step and start letting them smell each other that way and make the kitty smell more familiar to the old cat
see, cats have vameronasal scents which is like a thousand times stronger and more directly connected to the brain than olfactory scent (they have both) we dont have vameronasal scent so we dont understand it but those pheromones hit and it overwhelms the brain like a drug their personality and decisions don't matter, they can't control the physiological state of fear/aggression / arousal it puts in them
just take it slow and easy and let them both have their safe solitary space if you can
