even though it's tiny, it's drastically better for typing it's a little cramped which is to be expected, but after about a minute with it i stopped making any cramping errors the only slowing down is formatting as it has a FN button and combined pgup/pgdn/home/end/del buttons with the F8-12 buttons and the lower-right hand side by the arrow keys is one really awkward clusterfuck i have to format an awful lot so that slows me down, but the amount of formatting is g going to change by project

https://amp.theatlantic.com/amp/article/594187/ >Mountain lions found the sound of human poetry disturbing.
animals are bothered by the unfathomably alien and eldritch sounds humans make when they aren't accustomed to them? who could have guessed
Kirara π
>βWe thought it would be funny to play political commentators,β says Suraci. βBut when we had to score the videos, and listen to Rush Limbaugh all the time, it wasnβt very enjoyable.β For their next experiment, he and his colleagues decided to use calmer fare, including poetry and nature writing that they themselves read aloud. They played these recordings through 25 speakers, covering a square-kilometer grid, and programmed them to play 40 percent of the time. >By tracking seven mountain lions that had been fitted with GPS collars, the team showed that the animals kept their distance from the grids, and moved more cautiously, when humans could be heard. Using camera traps, the team saw that medium-size carnivores were also perturbed: Bobcats became more nocturnal, skunks became less active, and opossums spent less time foraging. The only animals that benefited were mice and rats, which took advantage of the predatorsβ absence to expand their range and forage more intensely. To the rodents, the speakers provided a human shield.
we thought it would be funny to alter an ecosystem by scaring animals and forcing them to live under great stress and fear
>βThis study suggests that a conversation between two hikers can have a butterfly effectβa mountain lion moves more quickly, an opossum changes its feeding habits, deer-mouse activity increases,β says Kaitlyn Gaynor from UC Berkeley, who was not involved in the study. βPeople often fear large carnivores like mountain lions, but in reality, they are far more scared of us. And as this study suggests, their fear can reshape ecosystems.β
this is so stupid two hikers having a conversation will affect things in a small area around them temporarily playing speakers throughout a fucking forest throughout the day is completely different
Anno
It's worse than stupid it's factually inaccurate. A study of perpetual human noise is not going to simulate an occasional conversation between human passerbys and therefore the study does not in fact suggest what the article is concluding.
Kirara π
they only played the human voices 40% of the time but yeah it's not the same as a conversation between two hikers especially since they used 40 different voices including people with extremely angry tones like rush limbaugh
Kirara π
and there have been other studies that show this kind of effect so they did this knowing it would be harmful to the ecosystem
Kirara π
>Next, the team wanted to see whether a larger carnivore would behave similarly. In the Santa Cruz Mountains, they placed speakers at sites where mountain lions had killed large prey and were regularly returning to feed. When the cats approached, the team played either talking humans or croaking frogs. The frogs didnβt faze them. The human voicesβincluding those of Rachel Maddow and Rush Limbaughβmade them flee more than 80 percent of the time. literally purposefully disrupting the entire ecosystem to make a point about how we scare animals too much
Anno
Like I can see the potential value in experimenting with what they seem to be trying to suggest, in that knowing how animals might react to passing hikers or maybe some people doing deep nature camping can help us better act in those natural environments to prevent damaging it. But if that's what you want to examine, then make the practical examination at least more in line with the noise the animals would hear from the people likely to pass through. Not talk radio or fucking poetry.
Kirara π
looking through the article, they didn't do anything to mitigate any potential permanent damage they could have done to the ecosystem and don't seem to have even measured it or acknowledged that it was possible
Anno
I had to do a whole course on ethical research methods and I don't even want to be a researcher you negligent fucksssssss
Kirara π
>We employed a repeatedβmeasures design with each experimental site receiving either the human or control treatment for 5 weeks (treatment period 1), followed by the opposite treatment for a subsequent 5 weeks (treatment period 2) with 8 days of silence between the two treatment periods.
Kirara π
>Each speaker played a randomised playlist of human or frog recordings (n = 10 exemplars of each) interspersed by silence such that each individual speaker was broadcasting 40% of the time and silent 60% of the time. Speakers were thus continuously active, but presentation of cues was random and sporadic across the playback grid. The human treatment thereby mimicked a wildlandβurban interface in that human vocalisations were relatively infrequent, but from any location within the playback grid, a human could occasionally be heard at any time. >you could hear human vocalizations from pretty much anywhere in the experimental grid because each speaker was broadcasting 40% of the time individually
Kirara π
looks like each speaker individually had a 40% chance to proc every 5 minutes
Anno
That's kind of dumb. Sounds don't occur randomly. Like a bunch of human noises might be unnerving for animals to hear, but if they're at least moving in a directional vector and that makes SENSE.
Kirara π
yeah random voices from random directions at random distances from each other for five weeks would disturb the shit out of humans, too humans could develop anxiety disorders from that easily
ζ
how do people even lose their grounding like that like how do you still have basic functioning with stopping to think about what you're doing ever
Kirara π
they gotta get that publication yo
ζ
i feel like this kidn // kind of stuff doesn't need to be actively engaged like that. it's really wasteful that knowledge and reasoning is definitely out there somewhere already, but our systems of organization are so bad that people either don't know it's out there or don't know how to find it, to the point where running an entire unnecessary study is going to be less resistance than simply accessing collective knowledge
i dont like that kind of a wasteful system and i want to tear it down
Anno
Or it's been deliberately quashed because it was a field of knowledge perfected by native peoples and all that knowledge has been discarded over colonialization.
Kirara π
there's a really cancerous mindset in western science that says nothing can just be evident without rigorous study 2000 years ago indigenous americans knew that birds intentionally started fires to chase their prey into the open, and that knowledge was passed down for generations
but then you see articles presenting it as a new finding, new information, never before known because we did a study!!
ζ
you can only apply so much rigor to the study of a dynamic system whose properties and velocity change with each measurement im normally for rigor, but not above fidelity
every time you perform a study that disrupts a natural ecosystem, you're moving the state of that ecosystem farther away from the knowledge we've already gathered on it unless you're going to design a study that drastically improves our understanding of an otherwise outdated system, it's irresponsible and negligent at best you're refreshing knowledge to a more isolated and less accessible state centered around you, with less reach at worst you're damaging the relevance of all accessible information
Kirara π
western science has become really detached from the reality it claims to examine whenever i raise these concerns when people are talking about research they always dismiss it like "well this is the best we have this is how we have to do it" so why do it it's possible to get useful results with some stuff but 80% of the time it's not generalizable even though it meets "rules" that say it is
Kirara π
the west is so confused about what's absolute and what's relative but so attached to all this stuff they think is absolute
ζ
>>718880 it's not the best we have at all that's laziness and ignorance
the potential study you want to do is actually a rigid system which you can analyze all you want without any disruption to figureo // figure out whether it's a useful idea or not before actually going forward with it that's not even like an abstract or formless concept. you can very rigorously quantify the potential gain and impact of a study with just some basic forethought and consideration nobody wants to do that shit because they don't understand that information is a physical construct and interacts in the same way physical forms do
>>718882 this is that concept I've returned to a lot over the years though, with more recent insights changing things a bit i always felt like people acted under complete confidence with incomplete information and that's why i used to get so angry all the time and also why ive always been so hard on myself when it comes to standards and expectations
it's only more recently that i've realized people aren't really sure most of the time and they're just trying to figure stuff out, which is a lot more sympathetic
though i wish if people were knowingly acting without full confidence then they would stop being so stubborn about being presented with contrary information or advice
ζ
ultimately it's not any individual's fault that they have access problems to information, any more than it's my fault i have access problems to healthcare you can't know how to access something you dont know exists, or when you dont know what channels exists for discovering or reaching that information
that's a big part of my focus, i think, on commutable systems there should be properties of a system that can be sorted and organized so you can identify what's relevant it's unreasonable to expect a specialized person to understand system equivalences in a field they aren't trained in
it's a very fundamental problem in communication

You dislike Arena not because it simplified right now represents a trend that will make more people come into the game with easy peasy roles like snap or family card games. I don't really see the game huge different from paper, I've been playing both paper and arena recently.

>>719048 Yeah that's kind of in line with what I was thinking. The see-saws slow the falls down which is kind of against what I was conceptualizing but the doughnuts are a good idea. I had music blocks in mind for similar stuff but the doughnuts do give a more uncontrollable bounce which is some good added challenge. Though I think you can only use them in the psuedo-3D map styles?
The imitation of the pachinko ball-firing chute is a really good notion though. If there's one thing I had to choose to take away from this, it would be that. By incorporating the fall reset mechanic at the bottom of the map I can probably save on vertical build and tweak a few more seconds into the overall fall. Plus I wasn't aware of how fast exactly those blue skull platforms actually get; I played through a story map with them a couple days back. At that speed honestly having a part of the challenge -be- the actual ride up to the top of the map could help extend the map duration. It's definitely given me more to chew on.

FormerRei@mobile
>>719070 II'm not really talking about arena right now I'm talking about the concept of changing existing cards
ζ
>>719061 Yeah, I mentioned originally about incorporating some obstacles onto the ride up. That's kind of what I meant. blue skulls are usually really dangerous and people set up all sorts of traps with them.
"donuts" are the platforms that will fall after you stand on them for so many seconds. what you're thinking of, which obviously should take the name donuts, are bumpers bumpers are available in all engines, not just new soup
if you want something more dynamic than bumpers, you can use springs-on-wings or track springs to cause a little mayhem (sideways springs probably) you can use springs in conjunction with those levers or one way gates, or just have narrow passageways through bumpers and have springs throw people away from where they're trying to be, or all sorts of stuff. you've got options there.
if you wanted to provide some character to the "firing chute" in a different way than danger obstacles or something to buffer the time, you can set up note blocks with enemies bouncing on them in controlled environments to make a controlled accompaniment and have a short jingle that they listen to on their way back to the top this is a fun mechanic that sometimes is used in levels to just showcase a piece of music, or in gimmicky/trolly levels to bring a recurring theme back when the player falls into the same type of trap repeatedly and you force them to listen to the intro jingle to never gonna give you up (or something else playful) before you crash them into a saw blade to die. it's got more oomph than just dropping them into a spike pit or lava from a death door/death pipe
since spawning stuff will change when the note blocks begin triggering, you can only do this in controlled settings where the player can't stop or start moving to throw the timing off, so a ride like that is a good opportunity to put something like that in
Kirara π

yeah but like magic is basically a scam because they ban entire sets of older cards from a ton of the competitive play every time new cards come out
FormerRei@mobile
>>719077 IIt's not banning It's rotating out The entire point of standard is only using the last several sets. They don't rotate out of modern, vintage or legacy. There are issues with not letting things rotate out For example Look at how much the meta changes in the eternal fornats And then compare how much the decks cost in standard to modern Or legacy Or vintage
Kannagi
>>719078 Rotation is still fairly profitable for them.
FormerRei@mobile
>>719079 IIt is profitable but it brings change to the format and prevents the meta from stagnating

Kannagi
Thats kinda limited view. They can do whatever with whatever cards if they think it'll make the game as whole better. I doubt there are any analylitics that says changing old cards is always bad. or preserving old cards is good
technically they changed the card in a reissue so you should just look at it as a new card problem solved

It reminds me of those old Mario Paint or some unofficial Mario engine where people would make up automatic maps that play out music using the various sound effects of the Super Mario World tileset. Kirara π
>>719113 why. what's wrong with the reissue of a card having a change why is that a big deal if it was exactly the same but with a slightly different name no one would have any problems
Koi
>>719114 yeah, you're right. That's cool. But changing paper isn't something you really want to do because it messes with the stability of a deck. You want the cards to work the way they were printed. Because the cards themselves are the game. Getting your old card changed for a new ruling or errata can kill the basis of your deck. >>719116 The deck is the game. When you change a card, you can potentially break the purpose of it.
Anno
Why is messing with the stability of a deck bad?
Kirara π
How is it changing the stability of the deck? If you have the old card you're playing a mode where old cards are allowed, it's not like they're going to say you have to change it to the newest version.
Kannagi
I doubt they make changes lightly though. given how little they have changed I think they have to be aware of how deck stability works.
>>719115 You're not explaining why that is bad though. Unless you're arguing that change is defacto bad and breaking things that worked in the past are defacto bad and NEITHER OF THOSE TWO THINGS ARE TRUE.
Kirara π
and yeah it seems like they want to create change and keep the meta changing what better way to do that than mess with deck stability
Koi
>>719120 Change isn't an inherently bad thing. But players want to be able to trust their cards. They want to know that Remand works the way that it always worked. That their Tooth and Nail combo works the way that it says on the cardboard. An errata change is a big deal on a physical collectible game because it opens up that can of worms where you can't really trust the cards themselves to mean what they mean. Meta changes, for MtG at least, is done through their rotating game modes (Standard, Modern, Extended, Legacy, etc). The game stays fresh. There's no problem with that. I was sad when my first Standard deck rotated out but you learn to keep up.
Anno
You can still trust cards if the effect text changes though. Acting like a new version of a card retroactively devalues the trust of all cards that came before it and come after it is just plain stupid. It's not going to magically change the versions of the card that came before it.
There is virtually no difference between a card getting rotated out because it was part of a deprecated set or if a new version of the card has a different effect. >>719125 What? No there isn't.
ζ
my package arrived i got gpc pram and adrafanil god bless
maybe i can get my brain normal again now
Koi
>>719123 What? Yeah there is. The newest version of the card would claim precedence. If they errata a card, and you're playing with the OLD physical card, the ruling as far as how it works is going to refer to the NEW version of the card. So yeah, it's very different. Rotating out of Standard just means you can't play that card in Standard. Changing the card itself means that the card is different in all game modes where it's legal.

Even outside of the people directly affected, this is the biggest mass killing in Japan in like 40 years. So many people in Japan have grown up feeling safe and then this happens. It's going to affect the entire country pretty significantly, their mental health. Japan is a country with unconventional standards of mental health and high suicide rates and trauma reactions from this will probably cause a lot of people to suffer.
Anyhow since I do feel need to explain >>719156 it is a cultural joke here, and I sometimes let those slip by it is based on finnish media reporting on events any time some tragic big event happens somwhere, there is always "No finns died in it" if a finn dies in it, it is a big event and based on death toll, some dark comedy website did a calculation that was like 1 finn = 10 europeans = 100 asians = 1000 africans = 1 panda, if it was cute and you have to reach atleast this milestone in casualties, to be news relevant

I'd just assume if there's someone that wants the kids dead, keeping the agency that wants them dead under the assumption they are is the safest possible option until they're out of deep space.

The fact that we have to rely on broken telephone from a little kid who overheard some people talking when she woke up in the middle of the night definitely makes it suspicious, yeah. >>719198 im not gonna think about it too much honestly because it's actually so fun to watch that i havent been thinking but im not on my meds either
i was thinking about how // just how much SHIT is going on all the time in this show the recent episode made me think that this would be a really fun campaign thing like fuck, having to roll to shoot the bird with the glue it's comical how much random shit is happening in it i would love to see something like it integrated into a co-op VR experience like a campaign, or even real-time events or whatever those things are called
like how fun would it be to designate the teams to go perform tasks and if they fuck up the ship's gonna crash or maybe something less game-ending but still undesirable and the little groups are gonna have to think on their feet to solve some weird problems that come up and possibly even have one person secretly be a saboteur who has specific win conditions that they have to plot around early on
wouldn't that be cool?
Anno
It strikes a neat balance between more elaborate mystery and plotting and goofy shounen themes like a gun that shoots projectile auto-setting sealant and planets that have giant trampoline trees and dragons.
>>719236 It was an hour-long episode one release. The following episodes are normal length.
>>719234 Kind of like a more streamlined and less hackey version of that Gmod Trouble in Terrorist Town game mode.
ζ
a little bit more sophisticated i think, but yeah that kind of social cooperation and deception stuff mainly the cooperation though. the saboteur would be a fun add-on, but mainly having the group work together to survive
splitting up into teams would be more to tackle different duties than to work against each other
Kirara π
zoinks gang let's split up
Anno
It would be a neat game option to either have every one cooperate or have one person operating on secrect objectives. Wouldn't even have to necessarily be a saboteur it could be there's some extreme hazards that only the individual is equipped to resolve and they need to move throughout the instance cooperating with the rest of the players while also completing their additional objectives secretly.
Kirara π
let's do it in real life we'll all draw from a hat and one of us has to kill everyone else while everyone else is trying to survive if they get found out everyone else can just survive like normal
ζ
asymmetric win conditions are fun too
i think of ToS and the vampire role how if there happens to be a vampire (very rare) they turn one person into a vampire every other night everyone has their own win conditions based on their role at the start, but once turned vampire their only goal is to have all survivors turn vampire any given vampire need not even survive in order to win. they just have to have only vampires survive at the end
whatever happened with that one movie where it was like You have to kill four of your coworkers, otherwise, eight of you will die. And it's in some company building that posed as some basic company office but was actually some kind of experiment

Koi

Anno
>>719243 If there's class-based mechanics kind of like how in Kanata no Astra each kid kind of has a specific skill trade they excell in, there could be long-scale win conditions for each class. Like for example Luca, the kid who's good with resins and fiddling, could have a win objective of using his tinkering and resins to keep the ship's reactor from overheating and going critical, but it's a complex multi-stage process that focuses on moving from the reactor chamber to parts around the ship and back, while more broadly there's smaller disasters that happen throughout the ship that either require his skill set or more than one player to cooperatively resolve the problem and so you have to balance your main objective with the smaller problems that arise, keeping your focus and not wasting too much time forgetting what you need to do next. And at the start of an instance one player is randomly also given the saboteur or rogue agent role and has additional conditions to win by. Though maybe that's a bit unfair for the one player that has to juggle all that stuff, so maybe the saboteur/rogue agent objectives can overwrite some of the vanilla class objectives to prevent one player being too overburdened.

My dad also believes he's been holding off writing the books until the show finishes, but not because he wants to pan the ending before he puts it down on paper.
!C0.PerkELE
>>719322 The show followed his instructions and even after he left it, I bet he left behind clear enough plot points to give us atleast somewhat of a same story that will happen
But this is like say... After midway point of Empire Strikes Back, you have someone who has never seen the movies, get the main points from that point on, but not the rest of it like >vader is luke's father >vader kills the emperor and few others but not the meat between the bones
Also yeah if he had finished the books while the show was running it would have presented two different versions of the story very clearly different versions of it competing with each other now releasing the books Post the ending he most likely will get more sales ... maybe? and atleast profit from having people buy the books just to get a different story compared to the tv series, ignoring completely the quality of it in this scenario

>>719327 Considering he closed off his first book in the series by executing the presumed main character and has populated his series with other pretty infamous left hooks. I think his desire to subvert things is pretty open at this point.
!C0.PerkELE
>>719326 but the point here is, how much does GRR Martin actually want to subvert stuff he has written 5 books pointing Jon Snow towards this big clash between him and the night king
with while night king being kinda irrelevant, but at the sametime relevant element in the story the ultimate "our politics don't matter before Death" but it really does fall down to how much has he himself changed as an author over the years
!C0.PerkELE
>>719326 Yeah, but that kinda set the MOOD for the series from that point on If in the book Jon Snow did indeed die and won't be ressed it will work but if he is ressed, well then you have a chekov's gun in the form of a "knows nothing" he will have to have been ressed for a reason, and even if you do "well he was ressed for no reason, subvered your expectations" the result will be in a quite good chunk of readers as "uhh... kay... that was lame"
!C0.PerkELE
Like take an example from Naruto the hokages when they were ressed by orochimaru, the only thing they served in the plot was ex... story revealing and then after that, they did practically nothing yondaime had a some amount of role, but otherwise none of them really impacted the story at all and could have been just not been there at all
which of course left good amunt of readers just going "huh, that was lame" So I kinda doubt Martin would actually, if he does Ress Jon, not use him for something big
Also i seriously doubt jonxdany happens in the books

she'd have an entire new kingdom to rule, expand and pass on to descendants, well she is barren I think?, but to some other dynasty Hell maybe even set up a republic of some sort
Anno
She has zero incentive to set up a republic, she was raised to believe she is a queen, her actions in the series lead others to treat her as a queen, everthing in her life reinforces her belief she is justified to be a queen. And madness and obsession, conveniently, also run in the family.
!C0.PerkELE

!C0.PerkELE

Yeah I think she fits the character well but I'm confused about the status as lead. I guess as far as the first novel goes she is the guiding force but that's like saying Ian MacKellen was the lead for Fellowship of the Ring. McKellen even.
Like if I had to choose Moiraine I'd choose the actress who played Galadriel and Hela

Moiraine is one of the main characters, but the main leads are actually Rand, Matt, Perrin and Egwene with seconady leads being Nynaeve, Aviendha, Min, Elayne, ... but anyhow, Moraine is a secondary lead, but she actually has like... 5? chapters in the main series from her point of view

As far as the first book goes I think I can understand the argument for her being the lead.

Well it's not hard to play some trickery with height. You don't even need CGI for it. Just some clever camera angles and occasional propping up.
!C0.PerkELE
>>719381 I hope they just cast nynaeve right and don't get "creative" about skin colours, cause the fucking series actually has quite myriad of them I mean, Seanchan empire is ruled by blacks for that matter

Anno
It has pretty decent name penetration, at least amongst people who read books (like books in general; far more so when considering those that read fantasy). For those that don't read a lot it's not that well-known. But in fairness neither was ASIAF before the HBO series. Neither come remotely close to the name penetration of Lord of the Rings even before the movie trilogy.
!C0.PerkELE
it was very well known in wc3 days while game of thrones had 0 maps made so there is that but then again, I think myself DID play a part in that popularity in Northrend
I'm discounting Harry Potter for the same reason I'm discounting The Golden Compass. It's more "normal" for kids to read than adults working full-time, and even if the adults don't read them, they're gonna know about them if their kids are reading them, probably. Both those series are also a bit less of a niche genre fiction series like Lord of the Rings or Wheel of Time too.
!C0.PerkELE
That is true LotR, ASoIaF and WoT are all adult fantasies
!C0.PerkELE
You know the most amusing thing about my different age read throughs of the WoT series are I grew to actually like Nynaeve more Elayne is still kinda annoying but when I first read the series, I found N, El and such chapters such a DROLL to get through But this most recent read through I have found, especially Nynaeve mch more relatable character
I think there is a thing of mental maturity there, but also being older and having more time spent among women to appreciate it

Jordan's wife and editor is also onboard as a consulting producer. If they're sensible they'll listen a lot of her, there's absolutely no one alive today that will know the characters and world as intimately as she does. Even Sanderson is probably not as close to the heart than she is.
