Kirara, the Cat
It might be frustrating, but y'all seem really hostile about it. I dunno, I'm just saying what I'm seeing.
Anno
I'm pre-emptively hostile in general towards dealing with TN. I've endured enough hostility from him in the past to expect it to inevitably end up that way.
It might not actually be that intense, though. People on the spectrum tend to answer more absolutely than others, so she probably went to strongly answers.
Anno
the quiz has some questions that will lead into hard leaning results if you answer them quickly
Anno
>are there inherently moral or immoral things inherently immoral, but nothing inherently moral so how do you throw that answer in there?
Anno
Nothing's inherently moral, so no. Morality isn't an inherent concept so there isn't inherently moral nor immoral things.
Kirara, the Cat
I'm a little surprised I'm so far into nihilism but maybe that's right.
Me? Not within my perspective, no. >>611987 No, it means the values I've evaluated have determined that I would never justify rape. That may change in the future. I really, REALLY hope it doesn't, but you can't predict things. But I can rely on my current moral holdings to keep me away from that.
Anno
then rape is inherently immoral to you
Anno
I don't care how societies' values ever chagne, from an observers' point of view some acts, using the example rape, is always inherently immoral
Anno
Okay, it's fine to disagree.

>>612008 Depends a lot on your mentality. And the goals you set for yourself, of course. It's definitely a lot of work to get really good, but if you find some good instruction, or even just have an -a knack to applying concepts critically, you can make a loto -lot of progress in a fairly short period of time. My experience is that getting good is punctuated by spikes of noticeable improvement against a slog of minute improvements that feels like you're not really getting better.
Anno
what isn't a lot of work to get good at really?
Anno
>>612011 speaking of such experience, how is your writing nowadays?
>>612013 About the same. I'll try and hack away at a story when I feel up to it, but it's hard to keep a single idea in focus and I'll jump around from idea to idea. I've been having a lot of stress with the academic writing I need for class though and that is kind of turning me off of creative functions in general, annoyingly. Plus it feels irresponsible, of a sort, to do it when I have things I "should" be writing.
Kirara, the Cat
>>612015 if dying were easy, i'd be super dead by now
Anno
>>612016 what kind of writing do you do btw? when you do it >>612017 I dunno at times all it might take is just a lil tumbl
Anno
>>612018 Fantasy, primarily. Usually not too high fantasy, aside from maybe magic systems and spiritualism. I usually have a more magic realism or semi-fiction piece that's on one of my backburners at any given time too though.
Recently I've been trying to work around a single world and work with that to develop cultures, races, and metaphysical systems , but even then I get caught up in trying to chase down too many stories I can think up in that setting. Focus is as ever a struggle for me.
Anno
I have always been to world building, but never really have written anything down and now that I want to, it just is kinda hard where to start.
Anno
If you're taken to world building, consider maybe more essay or informative writing, to coalesce the concepts into something more concrete than brain information in your head. From that, maybe you'll find some particular event or major story thread puller that you can build a setting and story around. If not, well, you'll have a fleshed out world. Maybe you could sell that in a different format from a novelization.
Anno
I don't think I can ever do novels I kinda fundamentally realise I can never write dialog
Anno
Dialogue can be really rough, yeah. Especially in fantastical settings where the nouns are probably gonna sound weird right out of the gate. I'll spend a lot of time trying to get something sound right if it's a dialogue or internal narration.
Anno
maybe indeed running one rpg campaign might help meo ut with stuff I do have that chinaland quite ready for something like that afterall
Anno

I know how that goes. I'm in love with the idea of being a GM but I worry I'd be too eager to take the reins of the story.
Anno
I am a stubborn, dominating person
Anno
wud u play a tn campaign?
Anno
If lifestyle permitted, yeah. I'm wrapped up in a lot of stuff right now though and it's making my already iffy commitment issues even more tenuous. Playing in a TRPG campaign is always something that sounds fun in its own right for me though.
Anno
logical choice is to ask the current players of ton's campaign, snce it is an offshoot of that but if THAT DAY AND TIME SLOT is the ONLY AVAILABLE for them... kinda makes the whole asking process moot from the start.

The 3D CGI in that looked so spectacular when it first came out. But now you look at the broken windows in the back, or the way the ground just looks like something out of the early PS3 era, and man. Fidelity is ever climbing an upwards slope.
Anno
>>612122 I still think it looks good I mean do you think the LION KING looks good?
Anno
atleast when it comes tyo me CGI has been in a standstill for a LONG time when it tries to look "realistic" it looks cgi but when it tries to look cartoony or monster well it looks just that and I am damn satisfied
and when I don't notice realistic cgi I am satisfied which is actually damn lot
but do you know what that CGI has to it? it isn't thrown in your face
Anno
honestly i think square's still the king of realistic CGI the movie that tied into FFXV looked incredible in the same way AC looked incredible at the time
it's not a very good movie but the GRAFICS
Anno
Yeah, for it's time it certainly looked good. And I expect contemporary CGI from them to be amazing. It's just aged, and with the perspective I have from modern CGI, I can see where things are kind of weak comparatively. It's like going back and watching Pixar movies from the 90s. They still do look pretty good, but there's definitive parts that look much less detailed than they would be in their modern animations.
Anno
Honestly if there was a game that looked like AC in 1080p I'd think it was still pretty damn good looking for this stagnant generation Especially if it had the same kind of physics, the characters aren't super realistic compared to stuff we can do now with face and texture scanning but they still look good stylistically the lighting is also not quite as good as we've reached with modern tech either but it's not bad. Any given Squeenix game these days has great lighting that's a lot better than AC's I think I expect the FF7 reboot/remake/whatever the hell it is to look better than AC tbh >>612126 Yeah I can see what you mean, there's no doubt that there's a huge difference between like Toy Story 1 and 3 even though they're the same style It's too bad that SE never did that well in the movie industry, I always love their tech. I bet if they could have done it they would have made FFXV the best looking game of all time. Still looks great, but you can tell in game comparing to the tech demos they've tuned down a lot of the lighting effects, and parts of the open world look kind of rushed. On the other hand, they already spent over 10 years working on it, by that point I would have honestly just wanted to be done with it, haha.
Anno
Only so long they can work on a game without putting it out if they want it to be profitable after all.
>>612128 Yeah it's not really a realistic scenario I guess I wonder how SE is doing financially anyways They had to shut down a lot of their older game servers and stuff a few years ago but I think I heard they're turning profit on FFXIV since the stormblood release finally Only took like 3 years and an entire expansion to undo the damage the release of XIV did lol
>>612131 Well even if their long-standing properties aren't as profitable as they once were they've absorbed a lot of smaller IPs over the years. And they've been doing some good stuff with IP reboots lately like Tomb Raider and Hitman. So they're probably still doing fine either through their long-standing stuff or diversifying.

Kannagi
Oh that makes sense. It was interesting visiting America and seeing all the houses I visited having air conditioning , ceiling fans and most of them having their own supply of water. Like my friend in Texas had a water cooler (I think thats what they are called) and these big bottles of water for drinking water over drinking tap water. Plus a bunch of fans around.
You are living in a real high end place if you have air conditioning built in, in the UK.
Kirara, the Cat
When your AC goes out in Florida, in the summer, you die unless you're pretty healthy. Well, a lot of people die, at least. Mostly kids and old people. Same in the Southwest.
Kannagi
Temperatures are increasing in the UK so get a bunch of deaths in very hot summers because we don't have anything in place to really deal with it. most older people. The opposite is true too, sometimes the winters are way too cold and a lot of houses are shit. I have loads of blankets just to keep warm because most of my heating just leaves the house because its shittily insulated.

Kirara, the Cat
Have you ever gone on a road trip?
I've only been on a train once. A 24 hour trip with a private room. It was really fun.
Kannagi
I took the train nearly everyday. for work but I'd go out on the weekend sometimes and get a train to somewhere new.
I haven't been on a road trip before, I mean ... I have been in car to somewhere and travelled to see family but nothing like driving with friends to somewhere we've all arranged.
Anno
Have you done a similar kind of thing but with trains instead? I know a lot of Europe is interconnected with trains far better than North America; a lot of the spirit of American road trips is due to the fact that it's the only way to go a decent distance affordably.
My parents backpacked through Europe for their honeymoon, only going around with a single pack for their clothes and belongings each, relying on the train infrastructure and rental vehicles to get around for the most part. That always struck me as a great thing to do.

月
same on price i havent looked into it because of the price but i know enough about it if i looked into it i'd probably feel worse about not being able to afford it
Anno
Yeah, fair. My interest is probably a little less so I'm not feeling sore about not being able to play. But I'll keep an eye out for sales probably.
月
it's fun to be a part of something new as everyone is getting into it like it'd be really shit to get into hearthstone now for the first time anyone still playing is at a high level and isn't exploring it like it's new so i kinda wanna get in while it's new. i see a lot of people playing it
Anno
Pretty much. I was playing around in the MtG Arena app back in its closed beta and that was fun but most people playing were previous Magic fans and could synthesize decks way better than I could. Even with new cards the previous knowledge you have about the game helps immensely. It's a little intimidating to jump into a deep pool of knowledge like that knowing all you can do is tread water. Maybe they'll do an okay sale this Christmas or something. That would be nice.
月
yeah ive tried to get into mtg a few times in the past, and some other card games, and before i got my adhd meds it was something i simply was unable to do even danmaku i couldn't keep track of rules and everything, had to play an example game beforehand and it just took up a lot of time and people got impatient with me i couldn't even learn the basics of mtg
so now that there's something new and i'm sort of normal i kind of want to give it a go i might really get into something that's 1-on-1 and gives me more control than a dota match until then, though, immortal is right around the bend~
Anno
Yeah, I've been seeing you climb the ladder. I haven't played a solo DotA game in months, hah hah.
Card games always kind of pique my interest but their format is really not conducive to my tendency to get intimidated and chicken out of doing things, unless I get in early and can stay abrest with the knowledge. And unlike DotA I wouldn't have someone to help pull me along despite my flakiness. It's really annoying to be that way.

What is it about Japan and USA that make them the world leaders of entertainment ///that makes them have lots of companies and people that do entertainment and stuff
Maria
The USA has a large amount of capital, population, and has cultural connections to a large number of overseas markets I wouldn't really call Japan a "leader" necessarily. It has its niches overseas that it can tap into and a large domestic population which gives it a big market, along with a culture unique and insulated enough to make it worthwhile to produce their own television and film over just importing it from other places

do y'all think yamada tae will get an episode is she awake and actually just fucking around maybe her brain needs to be recovered???
Anno
I don't think she's fully awake yet, she's just getting there really slowly. If you watch how she moves and responds over the show she's been getting more and more cognizant. I expect her to get something around the finale, probably pentultimate by my bets. Apparently some Japanese have been guessing real hard and her seiyuu might not do a lot of singing stuff anymore, or well potential seiyuu I guess. So even if she goes full woke she might not have a singing bit like Lily or Saki.

I hope the show answers the mystery of why Sakura ended up in Saga though. She didn't live there when she was alive but she got killed by a truck with a Saga license plate. There's also the fact that their bodies are in really good shape considering some of them have been decomposing for over a hundred and fifty years. MMPI is a really good test that can tell me quite a bit real personality tests are generally pretty accurate but they're not something a computer or layperson can interpret it takes a lot of training to use them properly
Marsh-chan
it's super interesting, actually the issue of IP rights when something is developed as a collective, and a lot of it is open source and done voluntarily
Do you think it's fair that a couple of guys CLEANED UP GOOD when dota was developed as a kind of collaborative effort?

I dont know what you mean by that
月
>>612827 yeah they could remake it sure dota on source 2 is so polished though i dont see a reason to
Anno
>>612836 Do you mean that it's kind of unfair that one or two guys gets all the reknown for modern DotA when its original existence as a mod for Warcraft was both the work of a team as well as building on pieces left behind by previous developers for the mod?
月
it was a small team really of like three people yeah there was community involvement but ultimately it was being developed by just a couple of guys the original developer couldn't keep developing it, others faded in and out but it went through a lot of variations
Anno
And never mind that there were people in that group that went on to develop HoN and League anyway. Sure DotA is probably the best of the lot (hoh hoh hoh) but, as far as I figure, they're the ones that gave up investment in the DotA project. Solidwateramphibian stuck with the project and probably rightfully was recruited by Valve for developing the DotA 2 experience.
Marsh-chan
well this guy's (losing) argument seems to be basically that since a lot of dota community development was open source for a period of time Valve couldn't buy out the exclusive rights to the game and because of that he wasn't infringing on valve's copyright by making dota for mobile
Marsh-chan
But more generally, beyond the case this >>612839 is what I was thinking about
Anno
Well my response was in, well, response to that. Modded content is weird and finicky so from a legal standpoint I don't think the other developers of the mod have ground to stand on. And from an ethical standpoint, well, >>612841 covers my thoughts.
Oh yeah Marsh if you want another interesting read on media that comes from the same class I got the McLuhan article from, here. https://firstmonday.org/ojs/index.php/fm/article/view/466/820 It looks at documents as a social phenomenon and how they affect and -effect and are effected by the social groups that form around them.
Marsh-chan
i'm still fuckin trying to process how the printing press caused profound detachment from our senses and lead to an isolated society that is only now beginning to fall back into tribalism through the creation of electric media
Anno
Well if it makes you feel better that other one isn't as loopy as the McLuhan interview. On account of few things being able to get as loopy as McLuhan.
If it helps, and this is me speaking not really as a believer but as someone who's had to get more indepth with his work, the printing press is an extension of one primary sense, our eyes, on account of that being how information is interred and recovered with printed text. McLuhan associates tribal culture with the utilization of all our senses, so the focus on one upsets that connectivity with the world. Combined with the extensive proliferation of the printed media on account of how fucking convenient it is, Western society threw itself into this hyper-exetension of the sense of sight, and for like five centuries engaged in this primarily isolated media. While you -can- discuss a book, after all, it's largely secondary to the actual purpose of the book which is to deliver information through text to your brain. This promotion of individualistic action is a detachment from the social culture of having to learn through verbal instruction, for example. With the emergence of electric media (specifically the television in the time McLuhan is writing) there is a return to utilizing more of your senses to receive and deliver information, and the television's capability to recreate the experience of a tribal chieftain or knowledgeable elder speaking to his tribe in live action is a return to that social tribal culture that McLuhan references.
Marsh-chan
Nah. I liked it loopy.
you know the craziest part was that he was writing in 1968 but it was like he was perfectly predicting modern society in the digital age
Anno
If anything if McLuhan was alive today I think he'd be fascinated with the Internet's capability to both unify and fragment society. If he's in some kind of afterlife watching over the world today he's totally bitching at all the other dead people at how much he's missing out on.
Marsh-chan
>>612856 wasn't it also to do with the fact that reading doesn't really involve sensing at all - you're creating an abstract recreation in your mind, so you're even further detached from the world because peoples' minds and senses are consumed with things other than their surroundings.
And he didn't exactly seem to speak positively about television or at least that it was responsible for creating a kind of sensory overload - since people knew about things and were able to see things and were immersed in things from all over the world, but which they were still ultimately detached from
I forget the exact line, I'll butcher it but it was something about kids of that day (young kids) knowing more and seeing more of the world than their grandparents - just by virtue of the fact that they had seen visual representations of scenes from all over the world >>612858 the internet would blow his fuckin' mind.
Kannagi
damn
Anno
>>612859 That's an interesting interpretation, because as far as I could tell, he was aggressively neutral about all the phenomenon he remarked on. He was simply saying "this is what something that happened had as a social ramification, this is what is happening that has a social ramification, and this is what will happen as -that will have a social ramification. The positivity and negativity wasn't really something he addressed, and when the interviewer tried to ask him on that he was always passive or turned the question away. If anything I would have read it as a return to a positive with the emergence of the television because of how fascinated he seemed to be with this tribal culture. But that might be my tendency to read narrative into things playing effect.
Also the printed media to McLuhan was extremely defined, at least in the information it was providing. There was that dated analogy he gave to television being like a lady wearing glasses and netted stockings and how that lack of definition made her more attractive. That was how he saw the effect of television, where as the extreme clarity of the printed media left no room for filling in the ambiguity.
Marsh-chan
well not negative from his perspective - because he was aggressively neutral. 'my role is simply to observe' but negative from the perspective of people who don't want to see radical shifts in the way Western civilization is structured of course, I'm sure you could find plenty of people who think that a radical shift is exactly what's needed
also , how do you get that print is more clearly defined when by having such a limited, finite scope (because print can only convey so much information) you leave an overwhelming amount of stuff that isn't defined at all
Anno
Because the definition isn't about what is defined, it's how well what is there is defined. A television might give you way more information through the audio-visual experience, but that information is diluted by the limitations of a television (still true today, but way more so for the technology of the 1960s). Where as the information presented to you in a book is clear and crisp and not up -and not diluted by the media it is recorded on. The individual may misunderstand and misinterpret text as easily as they would a televised segment, but that is not the fault of the media -- it's of the user.
Marsh-chan
I need a full eight hours sleep before I can mull this over.
Anno
Well here's a simple example. Imagine a book, fresh off the presses, with no real publication errors. Two different people would not be able to, in good faith, dispute what the words in the book are. They might dispute the meaning and intent, but the actual words are ironclad. Now imagine a fuzzy television broadcast from the 1960s. Fairly clear, but the resolution leaves some things not perfectly certain. That lady who's head isn't more than twenty pixels wide that's wearing glasses? Are her eyes brown? Green? It might be hard to tell for certain. Where as I could write in a book "the lady down the hall had eyes like green sapphires" and no one, in good faith, could dispute the colour of her eyes.
Anno
They could of coruse, dispute the abysmal quality of my writing.
Kannagi
I don't know if I think that is true. Like I can think of many different ways of thinking of green. I could read the passage on different days and my idea of green would change. uh, thats not really an argument. I don't think text is completely 1:1 transmission of meaning though.
Anno
Information can include meaning, but not all information is meaning. Text is not suitable to transmitting meaning. Again, this isn't about the medium's ability to confer a quantity of information, but about the medium's ability to confer a qua-fuck I got my quas mixed up. Or no I didn't. These fucking words man. A book conveys the quality of information stored in it to a higher degree than television, at least of the 1960s and maybe yet today, even if that information is weak because it drops certain aspects that could be conveyed through other media.
ToN
dispute deez butts
Marsh-chan
And what's the significance of that clarity?
Marsh-chan
No, tell me later. Too sleepy. Article bookmarked. we will pick up this discussion at a later point. Goodnight, /moe/.
Anno
>>612871 Read this later I'm gonna forget this all existed in an hour.
>>612870 That the clarity feeds upon our dependence on it. We read with our eyes and so as reading became increasingly integrated into Western society we became increasingly dependent on our eyes, to the point that in McLuhan's mind, it became the prime sense of the human race. I guess as a side point that should have been established the sheer convenience of information transmission by the mass-production capabilities of the printing press made depedence -dependance on reading inevitable. Information is certainly lost in print, but of the information that it retained, the incredible dispension of it throughout the Western world made the printed text invaluable. So people read more and accentuated their sense of sight more and the harmony of the senses was disrupted. Though this was merely a massive acceleration of the process that began when human beans first started using non-pictopgraph written alphabets to McLuhan. The shift away from reliance on text by the emergence of television was in McLuhan's eyes an opportunity for the other senses to be utilized more and return human beans to the equilibrium of the senses. Which of course he believes would have some even crazier ramifications for the species.

But eyesight has always been our most important sense from an evolutionary perspective. Something like 80% of all sensory information. And humans have better eyes than almost every other animal except birds And all that dependence was from long before the printing press
Also, how does the theory of blury, imprecise images on a screen hold up in an age of 1080p hd video?

>>612873 >almost every other animal What about flies? Or mantis shrimp?
>>612874 Do flies have good eyes? They have a lot of them Do they work well

>>612873 In terms of society, our sense of hearing and physical touch are probably more valuable than sight. Without either communication would have been an impossibility without written text. Evolution is concerned about survival, McLuhan was probably also considering proliferation, which is a benefit but not necessity to survival. Our ability to organize into communicative societies, utilizing our tense sense of taste and physical touch, was key to our proliferation as a species. Taste and smell of course have more direct contributions to survival.
And I don't know how the imprecision of television holds up in the modern age of ultra definition. But McLuhan wouldn't have either, considering he died before we entered it. I think there is still information lost though, on account of there being way more information available. The human body can perceive it all at once, but the human brain can only process a limited amount of information at once. A book can be processed in entirety at one's own pace, a visual piece requires you to miss out on things in your focus on specific details.
The solution from earlier still holds. Fish just needs to prove her cookie is better than everyone else's.

I'm doing okay. I'm hanging in there.
Kirara, the Cat
I'm doing fantastic.
Yuu
Fantastic, huh? Did something good happen?
Kirara, the Cat
>>612906 Yeah! Some girls at work made me cookies! I wasn't expecting it at all, and they made me cookies I know they don't eat, too. Someone making me cookies just for me makes me feel really good. And they taste really good, too!
FormerRei@mobile
I'm reading a programming book about problems the author encountered and *interesting problems Their solutions The first one is part of a program built for automatic gerrymandering.

>>612907 Wow, Fish is probably chewing on a towel out of jealousy.
Kirara, the Cat
>>612909 She's pretty upset. But this isn't a romantic thing or anything. One of the girls is in a long-term relationship with a cop or something.
Kannagi
Do you chew on towels when your jealous?

I wouldn't want to be on that column of ships... about 350 guns just popping iron hell on them
im kind of excited for eva to be on Netflix Everyone is going to be going through the discourse we went through like for the last 10+ years and it's going to make me feel so young.
Anno
in the mean time more random stuff
Kirara, the CatFormerRei@mobile
>>612934 I'm not They're redubbing it. Also the Eva fandom already has enough idiots, we don't need thousands of stupid normalfags.
>>612934 Evangelion seems to be a show that gets a social revival every decade. Though I guess this marks only two in a row so it's not too indicative of anything. It's kind of interesting though.
dude if you really want to discuss programming then you gotta learn to do it i don’t care so much about these classic tomes
FormerRei@mobile
>>612946 I know how to program, i just don't know how to write "software" or things like doushio. My area of expertise is in mathematical and scientific programming.

>>612937 idk i think it'll be a lot of fun they won't be worse than elitist jerks at least
Anno
>>612944 I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall for that executive meeting. To hear that one guy who goes "You all DO know how much traffic we get because of adult content, right? Right?"
Anno
Maybe if Evangelion is on Netflix I'll finally get around to watching it.
the tumblr thing is basically just an anti-sex worker thing they're literally starting the ban on a day which was supposed to be about encouraging safer working conditions for sex workers
Anno
Though by now I've pretty much seen Evangelion in all rights except actually watching it.
FormerRei@mobile
>>612956 What makes you say that? I'm not following it at all so I don't really know much beyond the sexual content ban being a thing.
things like that are pretty cool but i always hold a little reservation about them because they're fairly lazy that shit gets so many views in that format but it's really basic and then real wigger shit like tenlettername has like a thousand views
Anno
would you teleport into the future /moe/? You can choose any amount of time you'd like to skip
Anno
Maybe if I was younger, I would. Right now I'm far to accustomed to our current culture. I'm sure I'd be smacked in the face with some culture shock if I jumped ahead even 3 years.
月
how does the time skip work? will i skip forward to a future as it would be if i weren't there in the passing time, or the future that will be in 25 years with my participation in the world over that time? i'd love to get out of here and where things are gonna go but if im not here to make it happen it'll all be WRONG
Anno
>>612969 The time skip would work in the most favorable way for you. You could bring some people too if you'd like.
月
yeah i'd probably bring all you guys ahead 20 years and prove you wrong and me right
