IKEA has this shelving unit that fits perfectly into the little cranny between my desk and my dresser in terms of width. But the thing is also two metres tall. Not only is that half a metre more than I kinda want, I think it also incurs stability issues, since the page for the unit mentions it should be secured to the wall, and I don't really want to do that.
>>96464 I want some storage closer to my desk! But I don't have a lot of width room, no more than twenty centimetres. Pretty much any conventional bookshelf is twice that at minimum. Even this shelving unit is designed to store CDs and I'm just planning on not installing every other shelf if I get it.
>>96467 holy shit I have practically a 90s version of that yeah the thing needs to be screwed to a wall, it is too light otherwise
Anno
Which is why I want one that's smaller and in less need of being secured. My sister has an old CD storage tower which is about half the size of that one. I'd have to figure out how to detach the shelves I don't need, and convince her to give it up, but it would suit my purpose too.
Pictured stuck in limbo of "throw it away or store it in room/storespace when the syrian guy my brother borrowed it to empties it from his carbage, fucking foolish naive idiot"
Anno
If it wasn't particularly expensive I'd just throw it away.
But it is really convenient, you can even customize the shelf sizes and I used it as a booze storage in my last place. But yeah, it needs a hardwall that you can attach screws to if you want to secure it proper. Somehting I lack in this place and the last place. I had it ducttaped to the wall in my previous place.
Anno
Yeah, the IKEA page for the tall one advertises that too. I want regular bookshelf-sized shelves.
>>96472 I don't think my folks would be too hot on duct tape as a solution here, hah hah.
TN !PcAPtAiNJo
Not a good idea, since the glue will ruin the paint/wallcarpet I really intended to throw it away, but it is a useful item, and I don't really want to buy a new shelf when I move to my next place either... I should decide, since I actually have a about 60cm tall shelf that is MENT to go that space it is occupying
Anno
I mean that giant one I linked is only fifty CAD, which in my frame of reference is a drop in the water concerned with usual furniture set up.
>>96476 Yeah, particle board and fiber board, they call it by here. It's cheap, but when put up right, is surprisingly durable. The giant bookshelf I have on the other side of my room is made of the stuff and it's endured a decade plus.

>>96481 Well yeah, the finnish company is the original Lundqvist shelf seller, but since "the patented shelf-format is sold in over 30 countries" I bet you can get similiar shit from someone

Probably. Too be honest I wouldn't mind something cheap and without guarantee of a long life though. I have a limited time remaining in this room after all, and in the eventual future I move out of it, I'd definitely get a larger shelf for my near-desk needs.
Actually I have about third of the boards and ladders needed for that already and the remaining, I could just collect from friends and family, cause everyone here has atleast 1 shelf of lundia lying unused in their storage
I went to visit my friend who lives in one of the publicly funded government housing complexes. It's a pretty sketchy place. And after spending a few hours there I went to leave at about 11:00pm but there was some sort of police raid going on. I couldn't even move my car out because there were about six cop cars in the street in front of the place. and then I looked closer and there were about three guys all spread out on the ground with around ten cops searching them and standing around.

Anno
Well in fairness tinned tuna is tasty and can be used to make some nice meals. But >frozen veggies For what purpose, nerd. You have a refrigerator don't you? Just get normal ones.
Soon all food will be in pill form and I will be free from this nonsense.
Anno
Who would ever willingly accept a culture of just eating pill-based calories and nutrients. Eating delicious food is one of the most human things about being human.
Marsh-chan
Exactly it's an ANIMAL INSTINCT. We need to rise above
Anno
Not caring where you get your calories and nutrients from is way more animalistic than enjoying tasty food. You think most animals care about whether their meat tastes a bit spoiled? You think most animals are silently outraged that the kibble they get as pets is kind of bland and uninspired?
Actually if you see the bad side of chicken at work I can understand why you don't want to eat it. One time a chicken got into the horse shavings during winter and died. It was awful in spring when we were putting the shavings into the barn and the dead chicken was falling apart and had started decaying. I couldn't eat chicken for a month after that.
It was pretty bad. My favorite meal is chicken parm and I couldn't even eat it!
Anno
It's like the people that work in a French cuisine restaurant the whole day, whole week. You think they'd ever go out for French cuisine if they were eating out?
Homebrand Tuna in springwater is super healthy enough food for two meals and less than a dollar a can.
Marsh-chan

Tuna's the sort of exception I guess. I mean fresh fish is always going to be better than tinned food. But tinned tuna is pretty close to being good quality and insanely cheap.
well. tinned shit is gross. I'll give you that - except for tuna which is the best.
Anno
Yeah it's pretty poor. Except for tuna.
Salmon can be okay out of a tin too, but it's also a bit touch and go.
Marsh-chan
Not the cheap stuff. I tried it once and almost gagged. Had to throw it away.
Marsh-chan
I mean that was like $1 a can too, so I probably shouldn't have been expecting anything gourmet but still.

We mix it together with bread crumbs and egg and make small patties to fry up in a skillet. They're good by themselves, but you can also use them as sandwich stuffings if you so please.

It's unfortunate for the many people who live in other parts of the world that can't as easily access those pleasures, but that doesn't detract from the qualities of them. Besides there are plenty of people in western societies that are plagued with worries and concerns.

>The components the ABCF is producing are not ones that most people ever see: they are the turbine blades that are hidden away in the hottest part of jet engines. For from the decorative brilliance of Greek bronzes, they combine a utilitarian appearance with complexity of form and function and a jewel-like internal perfection: weighing only about 300g and small enough to fit in the palm of a hand, they are in fact perfect single crystals of a metal alloy whose composition has been fine-tuned over many years to operate in the hellish conditions of the fastest-moving part of a jet engine.
>perfect single crystals of a metal alloy what the fuck did they like grow these things or something
>Normally, metals are composed of many crystals – ordered structures of atoms arranged in a regular lattice, which form naturally as the metal cools from a molten state. These crystals are typically of the order of tens of microns in size, positioned in many orientations. At high temperatures and under strain, the crystals can slide against each other, and impurities can diffuse along the boundaries between the grains. This is known as creep, and it badly affected early turbine blades, which were forged from steel and later nickel bars.
>When it crystallises, nickel forms a structure known as face-centred cubic (fcc); each cube has a face with five atoms, one at each corner and one in the middle. When alloys are made, generally the atoms just swap in and out of the fcc lattice. But under the right conditions, aluminium and nickel combine in such a way that nickel goes to the centre of the faces and aluminium to the corners. This is known as a precipitate; it forms islands of greater order within the bulk of the alloy, about half a micron in dimension, packed closely together in a rectilinear formation. Because the size of the lattices of the precipitate and the less ordered bulk alloy are almost identical, they are all part of the same crystal. jesus christ so they perfected it
Wow, I didn't know all that about jet engine turbines. It's occurring to me tha tI didn't know a lot about jet engine turbines in the first place.

>To make the blades, the first stage is a ceramic ‘core’, of the form of the tortuous internal cooling channels. Wax is injected around this to form the shape of the aerodynamic blade [...] then the wax is melted out to leave a void in the shape of the blade. This is investment or ‘lost-wax’ casting, the same technique those Ancient Greek sculptors used to make the Riace Bronzes.
>Molten metal is then poured into the mould, which is placed inside a furnace to keep the metal molten. At the base of the mould is one of the additional casting features: a helical structure about the same shape as three turns of a standard corkscrew. Known as the pigtail, this is attached to a plate that is cooled by water. Once filled, the mould is slowly withdrawn from the furnace into a cooler chamber. The metal starts to solidify at the chilled plate, and crystals begin to grow into the pigtail. The crystals grow in a straight line in the direction that the mould is being withdrawn, but because of the pigtail’s twisted shape, all but the fastest-growing crystals are eliminated. Only a crystal with the correct orientation emerges into the blade mould proper, and the gradual withdrawal of the mould ensures the crystal continues growing through the melt into the rest of the space. this is like the most finessed thing ever
>The formation of the vital precipitates results from careful control of the external temperature and from the design of the mould; those multiple layers of ceramic determine how fast the heat from the molten metal can dissipate
>“This process is so complex, with precise control of temperatures and materials handling to manage, virtually atom by atom, how the blades are formed,”

>“Back at the birth of the jet engine, Sir Frank Whittle’s prototypes were made entirely of steel,” said Rolls-Royce chief of materials Neil Glover. “Steel is great for strength and surface hardness, but if you need high-temperature performance it isn’t actually very good; 450–500°C is about its limit.”

When life gives you lemons, be grateful because it just gave you something as cool as lemons when it could have given you like, ebola or something where getting rid of it is more complicated than just releasing your grip on the lemons If you don't want them just fucking walk away

I want some lemons actually Goes well with tonic

Right? Lemons are great How is "being given lemons out of nowhere by life" a metaphor for a bad situation? That's a GREAT SITUATION I fucking WISH life gave me lemons
You're not a super positive person for seeing a good thing and going "I can make another good thing"

>>96887 Maybe it isn't bad luck. It just tells you to invest what you're given instead of just consuming it. Lemonade is more valuable than raw lemon
