>>682800 yeah it ruins games hard dc player deals a dora hatsu on like the 14th turn and gives someone 20k points for an upset into first and ends the game from going under zero immediately
>>682804 Yeah and if you're sitting across from them then you're in the most disadvantageous position possible They'll keep feeding chi material to the player on your left, and the player on your right will have zero worries about any of their discards getting chi'd By that point you just get to watch the other two players go for open tanyao rushes

ζ
>>682807 right i can get dark chocolate filled with ginger, that's my favorite, but i gotta work to find it who even came up with milk chocolate probably a man
>>682806 uhh i guess i hadn't thought of it that way i always thought the shimo cha to the disconnected player was the most disadvantaged due to information, at least for these online versions where everyone knows if a call is available the kami cha is in the most advantaged position for the same reason. if the player across from dc (what's this player called?) discards and a call is available, the kami cha to the DC (shimo cha to the discarder) knows it's a pon for the DC's shimo cha he gets privileged information and also knows he can discard without any risk of chii
the shimo cha might be able to call chiis off the DC, but it's completely unordered and you cannot influence it in any way. everything in that hand is a deadwall that you can never know what's in there or call off any of it it's really lose/lose for everyone imo. it's the worst when two people leave and it's just you and one other person awkwardly
>>682809 not surprising i like switzerland though im ok with it my goal was always to make my way to zurich as an academic some italian bitch stole my place though for some shitty work in lattice cryptography like shit what a kick in the face
Maria
>>682810 The point about the kamichas privileged information is correct, but I think you're prioritising information a bit too much given the context of the situation. Normally if a player gets something like a dora, or a tile that would be useful for tanyao like a tile on the 4,5,6 octave, they would potentially keep it to themselves. But the disconnected player will always discard whatever tile they draw no matter how advantageous it could be. They will feed their kamicha (middle players shimocha) I think that this advantage outweighs the bit of information that can be gleaned from pon pauses, especially in the context of bronze or silver rooms where the average player isn't even high level enough to make use of it. Especially considering that the dc player has no ability to defend, it makes simply forming a hand as fast as possible much more important since the dc player is likely to play into it, and the dc kamicha has the advantage in that regard

ζ
>>682811 hmm yeah i see that when im talking about advantages, i mean it strictly objectively whereby an advantage is an advantage, regardless of whether that skill level or that player is able to use it or not
that's obviously not the whole story though as there are conditional strategies and advantages too in scenarios where optimal play is dependent on other players' course of action and capabilities that's nontrivial for mahjong and is probably the most frustrating part about the game imo, but it's a legitimate aspect of the game and is a crucial part of skill too
if that kind of thing interests you at all, check out the prisoner dilemma tournaments they hold where they test a bunch of different competitor algorithms and see which ones end up with the best stats
i think that's the reason games like mahjong or dota or other conditional dependencies are games of long-term stats and not performance in any single game. skilled play becomes about managing your margins and optimizing your performance for the long term in that risk/reward analysis, like taking the security play to end the game while you're in second instead of letting the game go on, even if you have a chance at first, because you could also lose it and drop

I'm kind of jealous of people who can be really expressive and earnest. I'm fine with the way I am, but when I see people being expressive and being able to earnestly introduce people as "the light of my life" and "king of my world" and all kinds of stuff like that, I get a little envious of how easily they can make people smile. It would be kind of out of character for me to do that stuff, I'm naturally more reserved and composed and not very expressive. On the outside, at least.
>>682815 >prisoners dilemma tournaments like this? https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/hamma4XgeNrsvAJv5/prisoner-s-dilemma-tournament-results
I can't speak for dota, but mahjong is definitely all about managing long term margins and isolating which strategies pay off in the long run
>>682819 Is this referring to iterated or isolated games of prisoners dilemmas? Searching "prisoners dilemma tournament " just gives me Wikipedia pages for the dilemma itself and tit for tat
ζ
yeah but that looks a little specific. you might just want to look at wikipedia, it has a pretty broad overview of the strategy involved there. reading into depth on that specific strategy probably isn't meaningful without an understanding of the strategic environment in the first place or why tit-for-tat is a strong competitor
>>682817 i can understand that, in both ways. im pretty reserved also about stuff like that but i could see the kind of case that would make me be expressive about that it hits a chord of yearning pretty hard though. seeing other people who have that makes me really happy in a way, kind of gives me hope you know

I was reading some of Suzuki Roshi's lectures, and there was one about breathing, and he was talking about how if you exhale, then inhalation flows from that and happens naturally. And then at the end of the lecture, he tells this story about his friend having a heart attack.
"The other day my friend had a heart attack, and all he could do was exhale. He couldn't inhale. That was a terrible feeling, he said. At that moment, if he could have practiced exhaling as we do, aiming for emptiness, then I think he would have not felt so bad. The great joy for us is exhaling rather than inhaling. When my friend kept trying to inhale, he thought he couldn't inhale anymore. If he could have exhaled smoothly and completely, then I think another inhalation would have come more easily."
This is one of the funniest passages I've ever read, I think. I've been thinking about it every day since I read it like two weeks ago. The lecture was given in the early 60s so maybe he didn't know a lot about heart attacks. But "if he could have practiced exhaling as we do, aiming for emptiness, then I think he would have not felt so bad" makes me laugh so hard. It's a heart attack! If he wasn't concerned about his breathing, he still would have felt very bad!
ζ
it's a nice sentiment though
Kirara π
Yeah, he seems like he was a really kind guy. Here's a story about him from Zen Is Right Here
>Suzuki Roshi had been quite ill. He had been falsely diagnosed with infectious hepatitis and had gone to the hospital for more tests. I went to visit him just as lunch was served. >He motioned me to come and sit next to him at the edge of his bed. As I crossed the room he mouthed the words "I have cancer." When I sat next to him he leaned over and took a bit of food on his fork and put it into my mouth. "Now we can eat off the same plate again." He said it as if the new diagnosis were some big gift.
He later died from that cancer, too. What a cool dude.

>>682820 I don't think I'll be reading past the point of the Stochastic dilemma, but one part stuck out to me a bit >The winning deterministic strategy was tit for tat, which Anatol Rapoport developed and entered into the tournament. It was the simplest of any program entered, containing only four lines of BASIC, and won the contest. The strategy is simply to cooperate on the first iteration of the game; after that, the player does what his or her opponent did on the previous move Isn't there typically a rule about not allowing communication between two players? If so, then wouldn't this always lose to a strategy that revolves around defection or doesn't realise that this player will copy their previous moves?
>>682826 Oh what I'm saying doesn't work in the context of a tournament It's a bit late for me to actually think
ζ
>>682824 haha that's cool >>682825 well if it's doing what the other one did last time, and the other one is based around defection, then they're both missing out on potential value these aren't about trying to beat any single opponent in the transaction, it's trying to earn as much value for themselves as possible the winning strategies earn the most value for themselves throughout the competition, facing off against a range of different strategies
ones based around defection tend to perform really badly over the long term in this regard they're also playing the same opponent for a lot of rounds each iteration i should add
Kirara π
There are a lot of really cool stories about him in this book.
>During a discussion, someone asked Suzuki Roshi if he ate meat. >"Yes, I do," he replied. >"Buddha didn't eat any meat." >"Yes, Buddha was a very pious man."

My buddy with a wife and 1yo baby might end up homeless soon. He works at Raytheon on satellites and stuff like that, but he still can't afford $1200 rent a month even with his Master's. They have a roommate right now but they announced they were moving out next month, and the new lease has to be signed soon, but they won't be able to afford it now. So they have a month or so to find a place they can afford. They have really bad credit, too.
It's so messed up!
ζ
things are really hard. could they maybe look for a new roommate before then?

>>682836 I was suggesting some people we both know that are looking for roommates, but they said it wouldn't work. They shut the suggestions down pretty quickly, so I'm assuming they already thought about that stuff and didn't push it. They might be able to find a place across the river in a poorer area. He said he's going to apply for something there. The market is really bad here. It's cheaper to have a mortgage than rent, and you need better credit to rent than buy, but buying really isn't feasible for most people.
I've been poor most of my life, but I've been lucky enough that I haven't been on the verge of homelessness before. Even when my house was about to foreclose after my parents' divorce, I was able to go live with my mom and my dad went to live with his girlfriend.
I wish I could do something. If my mom and grandmother were to die, I would inherit a lot of money and I could help support my friends. But I don't think that'll happen, so it'll probably be 5 or so more years until I'm making enough as a psychologist to support my friends consistently.
ζ
i keep thinkin about that summer house down south my dad built with his dad it's there. the land and the house are fully paid for, being self built and all i have no channels to talk to my family about any of that though.
also i think it's had to be maintained all this time and i assume my cousin has been there doing that, but i have no idea if so then he's got some merit to staying there it's actually pretty close to the beach too like a half hour drive we used to visit there in the summer. it's a reasonably sized house too, i could have three or so people stay there with me comfortably it probably requires some upkeep but it wouldn't be too bad.
i wish i knew how to make that happen. i could have saved up so much money these past years not paying rent, and could save going forward too. could bring other /moe/ friends having a hard time if needed, but i guess everyone else is kind of locked in at the moment. i really cant live alone though.

Kirara π
Yeah, if I had to guess, I'd say it's probably ad revenue Although these days maybe you can get investors with just tweet engagements since many people just read headlines.
I think we could be really successful when it comes to social manufacturing
ζ
ads is a weak platform i can think of better things. i just meant want potential earnings i wouldn't want to invest the effort of spending say two days of hard research, planning, and execution unless there was like id say at least like $2k to show for it that we could split up that's still pretty small too for the time investment i mean 40 or 50 bucks an hour is nice but there are steady jobs that pay that. effort investments like this should be more fruitful it'd be a start though, and after doin that for a while and getting known, people would be willing to commission services
ζ
and fairly responsibly too, no irresponsible social upheaval just normal things
Maria
"Goddamnit Parker if this next tweet doesn't hit 100k engagements your ass is chapped! You're through you hear me! "
Kirara π
>>682870 yeah, ads might make a couple thousand a year at most, probably there's also merch shops but idk how much those make
i have access to the account for a merch shop for my local DSA actually let me check our numbers
ζ
i think it's important to distance yourself from commerce for something like that since it's the least elastic market everyone's already flooding any and every avenue to push sales and conversions and frankly, those with higher investments can act more fluidly in those markets because they have higher margins on each conversion if you're an affiliate and you get 30% off of every conversion, you can invest a lot to get those conversions and still get good return but if you're a direct retailer and you're doing that in-house, you've got 100% of each conversion, minus overhead you can occupy more channels, or outbid on the same channels and get the conversion and still make more
that's commerce all around. and people simply don't care about commerce anyway. if your content is disconnected from commerce, even then the ads are going to a visitor base that doesn't care so it's going to have low relevancy if you want to force it with a pay per viewing of the ad as opposed to hit conversion or something thats fine but you're investing a lot of time to make residual income in small amounts and you've made a huge traffic network for nothing you could have done that in easier ways
>>682874 yeah i don't really know much about making money from a project

i mean it would prolly still work you could just make stuff and get traffic and monetize it but it's so passionless that way i got no motivation for that

I guess I'd say that it's usually like that, sure If you like yuri and sports and dramatic hyped up sports you'll like Saki Except by sport I mean mahjong Except you don't need to understand mahjong because all the mahjong in Saki is bullshit

Maria
>>683156 It's nice seeing new people get into it with stuff like Akagi or ff14
Maria
The psp game even lets you replicate the lesbian magic bs
ζ
when i first saw akagi, i thought it was just mahjong-themed and really overhyped with a bunch of outlandish things to make it seem more exciting
but over time i kind of realized that Akagi is designed as an introduction and tutorial to mahjong in the way the events span over key themes in mahjong. not only are the events not that outlandish, but they're pretty key elements to understand in playing mahjong really. of course the scenarios like wagering whole fortunes or your own blood is outlandish, but the in-game craziness really isn't that unrealistic.
the whole washizu mahjong arc i think was done for simplification to the viewer to understand what it's like once you can read tiles and waits just making the ties transparent is a much easier way to process it without lengthy explanations but it's really cool seeing that arc play out once you understand mahjong, and seeing how the game changes when you know tiles. they spend a whole episode on that hand where akagi and washizu are both waiting on the same tile, but washizu has like four waits and akagi only has one, and also that akagi is in riichi and washizu isnt, so there are three other tiles he can get to change his wait to one of the tiles that his partner has
it's really cool the way that show is designed

Maria
>>683161 I would say that the two are very different shows Akagi is a show that I find exponentially more enjoyable after having learned how to play mahjong Saki I think doesn't scale the
Maria
>>683163 four times in a row to rinshan kaiho a yakuman, you don't really need to understand what any of those terms mean to get it. The lightning and the music and the shocked expressions spell out that Saki is pulling some unlikely trick out of a hat and that's all you really need to know. Akagi is enjoyable without understanding mahjong, but if you get mahjong, then you have a much deeper understanding of what Akagi does and why Akagi does it. You'll see Akagi make some sort of confusing, seemingly nonsense move, then when it pays off you get a little "aha!" moment where you suddenly understand why he did it and why it was so smart of him.
Saki is basically the Girls und Panzer of mahjong anime
Also if you ever get into Akagi I would personally advise the manga over the anime. It's better paced I think since it's faster to explain something in text than verbally, and also if you need to look something up or stop and think about something then it's less awkward to pause a manga than it is an anime. Also the anime isn't a complete story

The modern setting mixed in with mythology and the wide amount of endings and impact of player choice really appealed to me. I dislike how rigid alignments are in other smt games. Like in IV you get Law, Chaos, Neutral, that's it. DeSu just has so much more freedom in how things go down

Mahou Shoujo Marsh-chan

Kirara π
georgia passed a new law where you can get a felony if you have a miscarriage or get an abortion or plan to go to another state to have an abortion it's a very very very bad law
so alyssa milano, a "feminist" activist who has a lot of clout wants to go on a #SexStrike she thinks you can combat a law that is intended to stop women from having sex by not having sex thousands of people have been supporting her and telling her "yes, this is good. if you don't want to get pregnant, don't have sex. then you won't miscarry or have an abortion" and she keeps doubling down on it even though she's obviously playing into the hands of the dudes who made the law
now she's trying to tear down black activists who disagree with her (while ignoring the white ones who do) she's like gaslighting tons of people on twitter about it now
she also posted a link to a page with the history of sex strikes to show that they work but at the end of the article, it had an analysis of why it won't work in the US so she didn't even read the article
ζ
that sounds pretty disastrous and something i'd like to stay far away from all around
that georgia law is pretty infuriating though
i dunno it feels like an initiative based around sex is a bad idea to begin with. i feel like a lot of the people actively participating and being vocal would be people who aren't having much sex anyway and that just kind of throws the whole thing off. and pure maidens like me who are completely ace have no voice in this initiative.
i suppose for the same reason though the georgia law doesnt apply to me but that doesn't mean im not distressed by it
Maria
>>683218 >if you have a miscarriage Is that a real part of the law
>>683221 >investigating miscarriages Thats so cruel How do they even expect to investigate or prove such a thing Where's your riots
Kirara π
yeah, it is because you can induce a miscarriage so if you have a miscarriage, they're going to investigate you for murder (of the fetus) and according to the law, you can get a felony if they decide you did it on purpose
>>683220 that's the fun part there's no framework to do so, which terrifies people because they don't know what's going to happen or how fair it will be but that's the point, to scare people so if you have a miscarriage, you can't go to the hospital now even though you need to
the point of the law is to be so extreme that they can use it to declare abortion unconstitutional and outlaw it in every state someone will bring it to the supreme court and the court (which trump loaded illegally) will overturn Roe v Wade and outlaw abortion throughout the united states
>>683219 it's all very distressing terrible things are happening which is distressing but then all of the people with the clout to do anything are too liberal and stupid to actually do something that doesn't empower our oppressors
ζ
protesting should be done responsibly so you dont inadvertently hurt your cause twitter mobilizes people so easily that there's not really enough pause to reflect on whether or not what you're doing is a good idea
Kirara π
it's really easy for bad actors to use the platform to use their followers to get attention, too i'm pretty sure alyssa is just doing this for attention

like if you're wringing water out of a shirt you're trying to get rid of the water but if you were doing something like that to, say, a teabag, you're trying to obtain what you're wringing out instead of get rid of it

>>683406 Well those two verbs are different words so maybe there's some language playing around there.
oh yeah, no problem i have until 5 instead of until noon so it should be fine do we do anime tonight? i should have time for that and it'll be a nice break for my hands if not that's cool
Anno
Probably? I can't imagine Rika's gonna be partying on a Sunday too. Hopefully Jan and Ika are good for it too.
ζ
gosh maybe i dont have until five. i can't tell because the listings aren't consistent between the server and the assignment notification
it's awfully cold for being mid may already sheesh
Anno
Yeah it's been pretty chilly over here too. I'm getting kind of annoyed about it, I want to have my window open and enjoy the warm spring air.

A friend of mine got in contact with me just now asking for a place to stay, Now I'm not living on my own and still with my folks, so the permission he'd be seeking would be theirs, not mine. That alone poses some problems. The last time they knew this friend, my mother really didn't like him. To be fair back then he was a bit of an unpleasant guy, lying pretty freely and messing around with me and his other friends using those lies to seem like he was cooler or more impressive or whatever. I haven't seen him in like four years, and even then it was the first time I'd seen him in about as many years. But he seems to have become a much more normal guy. If I'm assuming it's the truth he's telling he's out of a place to live, doesn't have his identification or bank cards or more clothes than the ones on his back. Still, my mother probably still harbours that unease about him. On top of that, my youngest sister still lives with us, and while I don't think this guy is likely to be ... that way, it might make my parents worry about taking in a relative male stranger into the house. Not to mention my parents are starting to wear thin their patience of hosting me at home recently too. If they want to encourage me to leave, they might be hesitant to let me lend this guy room.
If I can do good and lend someone who really needs a place, I'd like to, but it's not really my place to do it without my parents' consent. But I don't think I can successfully plead his case to my parents.
Anno
why even ask anything about it all you will ever receive is a worm of "I am fine" in less or more words
ζ
>>683450 I understand you probably weren't posting that to ask advice but just wanted to monologue a little bit, but if you are asking what I think no not even worth considering i get that you want to help but imagine how your sister is going to feel even if the guy doesn't cause any problems and what if he does? it's maybe not likely, but it's some guy down on life and kind of desperate and it sounds like he's never been that considerate of others in the first place god forbid he does anything to her you'd be trying to live that down your whole life and your poor sister... it's just no
but even if it's not problematic, your sister and family don't really know what the outcomes are going to be. it's going to make everyone very uncomfortable. you dont know if he's going to creep around and look for stuff to steal, dig through private information and try to open a credit card in someone's name in your family, use your wifi to download illegal things, creep through your sister's room, whatever
maybe he doesn't seem like someone who would do that, but you would be surprised how well people can hide their intentions when they have dark pleasures like that
>>683468 Yeah, that's pretty inline with a lot of the concerns I had been thinking over. I'm also not able to be home all the time to keep an eye on him. He did say he'd be willing to leave the house when I did if that would help, but I've still got to sleep at some point, and there's other stuff you mentioned he could probably do behind my back pretty easily. I feel kind of grimy having to think of him in these ways. I know I didn't paint a great picture of him earlier but that was like, highschool him and me. It's been almost a decade since then. Aside from the lying, him and his family always treated me really well. Was always willing to have me over for the night on Friday or whateve where we'd crash and play games or shit, and his mother was more than happy to cook both dinner and breakfast.
ζ
are you talking about him staying for just a night or something? like if youve got a spot for him and it's just overnight that's one thing if you're talking long term it's a really bad idea
Anno
It sounds like he needs a place for long-term, which, yeah, is what's got me particularly concerned.
ζ
home is supposed to be a place to feel safe not sure if you've ever felt unsafe in your home but it's a really distressing feeling
i know you wanna help him but you'd be hurting your whole family in taking away their sense of safety and they'd have to be on guard in their own home and things get awkward
i think you should worry more about them. even if no harm is done, their comfort is still displaced, and that comfort isn't a trivial thing or a luxury, it's an important thing
Anno
Yeah, and those are things I feel would my parents, especially my mother, would consider if I were to ask them. Even if my mother doesn't like someone she's kind of a fundamentally decent person. But even that probably isn't enough to overcome the smart sense of protection.
