I got to see a kind of weird, for me at least, thing last night. I've got this one guy cousin who's about the only one around my age. I only see him maybe once a year tops at the family Christmas party, but I do see him consistently at them. And last night towards the winding down of the party he went up to our granddad, and outright did a formal "I don't know who you are but I'm X and I'm your grandson" kind of introduction. Apparently he hadn't seen our granddad since he was like five or six so neither of them really knew who the other was. My mother and I were both in earshot radius though on opposite sides of the two of them and as it was happening we're just exchanging these looks of bewilderment.
Apparently there'd been something that came up betwee his family and our grandparents when they were young and because of that, his parents kind of cut our grandparents out of their kids' lives. Which is kind of a depressing thought. I wouldn't say granddad's a sweet and doting guy but he's interesting and even at ninety-five has a lot of character.

At the party last night my dad had a speech prepared commemorating my granddad's ninety-fifth birthday. And throughout it he was talking about things he always remembers his dad by. One in particular was all the camping trips his dad took the family on, hitching a trailer up to the car and going off to some campground somewhere. Apparently one time as they were getting ready to leave once, the dashboard of the car starting smoking. So granddad, the mechanic, ripped the entire dashboard out, re-did the wiring, got it back together, and they still went camping.
And as my dad was talking about the camping trips, my granddad remarked "I always remember the one with the bears", to which my dad goes "What bears?" and looks around at his siblings, who are also not sure what their dad's talking about. There had been bears tramping around their campsite one night apparently, and granddad had pragmatically been smart enough to not tell his kids about them at the time. But in the end never got around to actually telling them ever, hah hah.

hell in high school we even had a "protest" when everyone basically skipped the first lessons, that began at 8 I think it was something like, ofc not everyone had lessons that day, near 100% participation so much anyhow, that none of the lessons were held sicne too many people were missing, so no one got marked with "skipped a lesson"

my middleschool was kinda odd one it had just previously been middle+high school so even after the high school was defuncted, the curriculum in it was much closer to a high school one in many parts, in terms of organisation than a traditional middle school. and high school in the capital region was very different from any other high school in finland, and amusingly my generation were the "pioneers" or "guinea pigs" for that sytem *system in generation meaning basically people born same year as me, one before me and one after me

like uhh in high school every student formed their own curriculum by choosing which lessons to attend which semester so forexample, during one of my last semesters, I made a curriculum, where I only had one lesson on thursdays and on mondays my days' started at 12 and on friday's ended at 12

all done on interwebs the system back then did have one fatal error, as in say 50 people wanted to attend course X, but course X could only hold 30 people and course X was required course to pass high school at worst it ment that the 20 unlucky, would have to wait for NEXT YEAR to take that course

so at times it lead to people say attending advanced chemistry, before attending basic chemistry an example, that never happened actually but similiar shit happened way too many times, but I think they have fixed that by now being able to either 1) accomodate at all times all willing to take the course or 2) being able to create additional courses
same problem was and still is in university world, though but then again that uses an entirely different system
Maybe she assumes they'd be "better" partners than Fish would be. Or she read something about left-leaning people and their sexual freedoms and was seeing it the shoe fit.
