Everything is a mystery again.

That's a bit like an idea I've been playing around with. A world that was once a hyper-advanced magic-based society that made nature-defying wonders and creations of wonder. But then the magic runs out and all the constructs and structures fall apart without the magic that previously sustained them. And then working stories in a world several centuries later, where technology has advanced to something akin to the Industrial revolution of our world, and the people that seek to understand the culture and creations of people from this ancient past.

>>214219 It's a bit difficult form -for me to put down a concrete interpretation for myself, since I watched it so long ago, and afterwards I discussed the show a lot with a friend at the time.
>>214225 That's a hard question because the show doesn't let on much about its world. One day a girl finds herself hatching out of a giant egg in a sleepy town and grows a pair of wings and a halo. A bunch of other girls have the same features. The rest of the show is about her life in town and learning about the religious traditions of the place
"The Haibane, enigmatic youths with halos and flightless, grey-feathered wings, live in a sleepy town surrounded by impenetrable wall--only the crows may come and go. Reki, an older Haibane, discovers a new cocoon, from which Rakka emerges possessing no memories except that of her dream of falling. Questions of her existence cloud Rakka's mind as she struggles to learn the ways of the Haibane and to help Reki escape the Circle of Sin."
Off the back of the DVD case.
It's a episodic slice of life series that gives you insight into a strange culture of a strange town with a peculiar assortment of residents. There's some heavy concepts that lay beneath the day-to-day life of the Haibane and there's compelling reasons to become attached to the characters. The show is a very lovely piece of work and I appreciate it when people try to watch it.

>>214238 Well you have to remember mileage does vary on stuff like this. I have friends that found Haibane too deep for them, and the SoL stuff just ended up being too monotone. Still, it is part of a group of series that I always appreciate people trying to watch and engage in. Shows like it, The Tatami Galaxy, Mushi-shi, Lain. They're all fantastic series and though I know they're niche entertainment in the end, I still appreciate when people at least make a starting effort to watch them.

>>214245 More specifically, it's that they weren't picking up or caring to observe the undertones and mystique of the town from the get-go. And as a standalone SoL anime the show isn't terribly entertaining until things start to go places later on. >>214252 I would appreciate it if you give the show , Haibane Renmei, that is, a try. It's a show very dear to my heart. Though if you find that it isn't gripping or enjoyable for you, then you shouldn't feel obliged to get through it all.

Maria
>>214252 yeah it's a good show I'd also reccomend Lain since it has character designs by the same artist and has the same director. Lain's a show where you really gotta pay attention though or you won't get it.
Anno
>>214255 That's a bit of a stretch though. Lain and much of the other work he participated in were collaborations between him and two or three other major creators. Where as Haibane is much more a creative piece of his own.
>>214258 I know, I'm talking about Haibane being more of his creative influence, where as many of the other anime he worked on were creative collaborations.
FormerRei@mobile
>>214257 He wrote the manga that NiEA_7 was based on and the manga that Haibanei was based on. *adapted from There is a signifigance in watching NieA_7 immediately afyer Lain though. That one I'd say is the most important to watch in order of production.
Anno
>>214256 What is Lain about? >>214254 I will add it to my list. Why is it dear to your heart? That question sounds rude but I am not sure how to phrase it better. Sorry.
Maria
>>214259 Lain is about the internet and how it affects our lives. One day a girl jumps off a building and then her ghost starts sending emails to her classmate, Lain. Lain then starts investigating the emails from this dead girl and there's a big mystery.
Yuu
>>214252 I can't advise on this one, I haven't seen it!

Kirara☆ !Sh0sAiDORU
>>214261 I'm going to Hawaii, I guess. Even though I still don't know what I'm supposed to do there.
Anno
>>214259 No, thanks for asking. It's dear to my heart because of a couple reasons. I watched the show for a first time at a point in my life where I was going through a changing phase, parts of my life were re-arranging and things were becoming different. Maybe this made me particularly volatile as a person but the empathetic strong points of Haibane really spoke out to me because of that. It was also one of the first times I was going out and exploring full, finished anime series. Up until then I had just been watching weekly shows for the most part, but Haibane was one of the first shows I got to marathon through from start to finish. Watching a show like that is a much different experience from watching it week after week. It was also one of the first pieces of fiction I really got to talk HARD about with other people. Like get into discussions on details, subtexts, hidden meanings. Stuff that gets me as a writing nerd fired up a fair bit. It was at the start of my entrance into Internet communities and talking about it helped me ease into the Internet culture. Without it I don't know if I would be where I am right now.
The show also has a very lovely ambiance to it and the production, while aging since it was animated in the early '00s, has a certain artistic feel to it. And there is a powerful moral takeaway to be found in the conclusion of the story, which in due respect I will avoid getting into at this point. It's a marvelous show.

>>214274 I have three albums of music from the series. The music is really, really good. Otani Kou's composition work is amazing, and he works wonders with Masumi Itou's vocals.
The two of them both participated in the music of Jinrui wa Suitashimashita and I feel contributed a considerable bit to why that series was also so good. It's a shame he hasn't really done anime work since 2013. Or hasn't done any at all.

>>214332 I think it's important to not disregard that these shows are considered necessity anime because of how they have invoked empathetic reactions in the viewers or have similarly astounded or impressed them. Evangelion is considered a must-see because the cultural magnitude it carries is backed by the fact that it does a lot of interesting things that produced the cultural magnitude.
But at the same time all these shows, all the sentiment people have for them, is still pretty much subjective. Not that something being subjective means you should throw it out the window, but that if you disagree with the enjoyment factor of one, you shouldn't feel wrong in doing os. So, even. However, what you shouldn't do is throw out the entire list because you can find pieces on the list that didn't wow you in the same way that they have so many other views. Just move down on to the next one and maybe you'll find that this one strikes you or has the same impact on you that it did for so many other viewers that cemented its place on a list of necessity anime.
