There's an eventual reward you get from Nook where he gives you fifty fencing. I was thinking "Oh that's nice and all but having to put down individual fence pieces sounds like a nightmare". But I put one down to test it out and my villager pulls out a fucking hammer and you can just put them down, still piece by piece, but without having to menu out each fence piece. You just whack it into the ground with the hammer and it feeds out of your inventory.

It's nice to get the Nooklings their own store, but it comes with the trade-off of them having open and closed hours so you can't sell things to them 24/7 anymore. Walking back from the bus stop one of my neighbours have paper stuck up to their window with a rainbow on it and "Have A Walk!" written on it. I think that's something a lot of people are forgetting about this. You don't have to socially distance cooped up in your house. The weather's ... well, okay, it's some semblance of warm when you're in the sun. And we've got a LOT of nature trails and greenery to walk through where you don't have to worry about being around other people. It's valuable to get outside and do some physical activity.

It's a game that's modelled on playing maybe a couple hours a day over a long, long period of time, but there's a lot of binge potential in it. Animal Crossing really relies on the player to find their own motivation to do things. It'll reward you for pretty much anything you do (more so in New Horizons because of Nook Miles), but it won't tell you to do anything, and more importantly, it won't necessitate you do anything. There's no penalty for not paying off your loan to Nook, only a reward for doing it. Your villager will never starve, but eating grants you quantified powers to move trees and smash rocks. Refusing to donate anything to the museum won't make its curator storm off in a huff, but donating fills the museum up in an aesthetically gorgeous way. You don't even really need to interact with your villagers if you don't want to. Not playing for a month or so might have one move away, but any that stay will have like a single comment on your absence and that's it, back to normal afterwards. Nothing in the game is designed to push you along, but it's happy to have you come along and see what it has to offer.
I love that aspect of it, but I definitely understand how it can leave people feeling unmotivated to play it.

Also I think just being in the game is kind of a ... damn the word's escaping me. When there's a low-effort activity that just doing helps calm and relax you. Like watching fish in an aquarium swim around. A lot of Animal Crossing is just like watching an aquarium for me. Or walking through a museum.
