I think Masaaki Yuasa's unique style is always interesting. He's a director but his artistic touch is extremely apparently in how the animation and style works under his supervision. Apparent, even.
But generally people that are trying to market a product to sell are hesistant -hesitant to take risks like employing a unique artstyle. Stuff like that -does- turn off a lot of people. And the stuff that does employ usually ends up arthouse-y or, well, actually unpopular. Because like I said, playing with art style will disenfranchise a lot of potential viewers.

On the other hand, you get shows like Shimoneta, which was really interesting with its science fiction dystopian world hidden behind the comical premise of banning dirty jokes and porn in general. But they did so much on demonstrating the world around them and how fucked up it was and kind of ignored the actual characters, relatively at least. So it's not surprising it didn't get much attention in Japan after the initial shock factor wore off.

They're good at what they do but it can be some times difficult to open a dialogue with them. Heavy Indian accent is one of the toughest things for me to decipher some times. I think the only thing that's ever trumphed it for me is super heavy Greek accentuation trying to speak English. I had a music teacher in middle school that also lived in my neighbourhood. So much of trying to converse with him was him saying something totally unintelligible to me and me nodding and a vocal agreement.
