I feel there's a bit of a discrepancy between stuff that reduces Athletic rolls and increases chance of evasion but I understand.

So theoretically if something has turned its attention on you in battle, could I immediately trigger Fleeing to turn its attention off me--or at least avoid it until its attention goes elsewhere?

Hit threshold is evading attacks and negating attacks.
If an attack doesn't get through your hit threshold, it either doesn't penetrate your armor or you evade it, whichever makes more sense.

if you flee then you can't fight
to maintain distance, you'll need to use athletics
fleeing is for actually running away and trying to escape
if you use fleeing, you still have to be able to compete against your pursuer too

Yeah, I remember the Fleeing mechanics.

What I'm just trying to figure out is, is it possible to use skills (Athletics, by the look of it) in a battle to avoid ever getting close enough to something to get hit--or risk getting hit by a close-range attack.
I fully understand ranged attacks like gun shots are a different matter entirely.
