Having an organized and uncluttered space. This is a first for me. In my life. I fixed up my office space to display some figures and other weeb stuff and had to clean a little to do it. Fahrenheit is like, "0 to 100 is roughly how good it feels to be a human" Celsius is like, "0 is water freezing, 100 is water boiling" And then Kelvin comes stumbling in, visibly drunk, "actually, I like celsius' scale, but 0 is a theoretical absolute 0 that it turns out literally can not ever happen, ever, anywhere"
S C
Like 0 kelvin makes sense intuitively But it turns out the universe doesn't give a goddamn what we think, and 0 kelvin can't be done because at small enough scales, everything is rolling cosmic dice for everything including their position, which means they can not ever actually fully freeze

S C
yeah it's definitely still useful it's just funny the 0 is not actually a temperature anything can ever be at
S C
I wonder what the theoretical maximum is though I guess that will vary by density and whatnot, maybe, but there's gotta be one for any given clump of matter, right? Cause heat is just the movement of the Stuff, and there is a speed limit, so there's an upper limit even if it's absurdly high
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
i feel like there's knly so much energy you can add to an atom before it either explodes and releases it everywhere, or turns into a black hole
Rei !p8eYCadcMo
the maximum is uh I guess it depends on the material from one definition anyways cause there's a few different ways to derive it
>>1137419 yeah figured it'd depend on the particular thing I'd guess the denser something is, the lower the theoretical maximum temperature, generally or maybe the other way around
this is obviously entirely ignoring the whole "will it even literally hold together" thing, since I imagine like samu said, once you pump enough juice into something, there comes a point where it's just too much and it rips itself apart with the combined force of all that motion
Which I mean, that IS a maximum temperature, for sure, it's just not quite what I mean I mean more like, the upper limit as a result of the particles involved only being physically able to go so fast, so even if you could pump more "heat" in, it wouldn't actually do anything cause they're already pushing the speed limit Like if every particle in some Thing was bouncing around at c, obviously it can't actually get any hotter cause what would that even mean?
S C
though I guess that's to some degree tautological because I mean no duh you can't actually add more energy, there are particles with mass going at c in there, it's already got infinite energy
but also we can define negative temperature (in kelvin) as being "hotter" than positive infinite kelvin because it's so "hot" that makes entropy flow backwards
S C
Oh, that's definitely uh certainly something I'm guessing that's one of those artifacts of the maths more than something that could conceivably happen though
Rei !p8eYCadcMo
yes
Rei !p8eYCadcMo
that's using the thermodynamical definition of temperature
Rei !p8eYCadcMo
don't ask me to explain entropy it's like notoriously difficult to teach

I didn't even know it was something to really understand as a concept
Rei !p8eYCadcMo

Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
theres lots of different takes but it sounds like you can actually just keep adding energy to a thing in theory, and it gets infinitely closer to vibrating at c
Rei !p8eYCadcMo
>>1137433 yes, but the upper limit is c however positive infinite k has less energy than negative infinite k

oh yeah that actually makes sense there's an infinite amount of values between 0 and infinity, after all, so

>>1137435 oh yeah I remember a textbook from a while back that I think you would like it would bring you up to a point where you would be ready for calculus
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
kinda like even if you keep accelerating forever you'll only get to 0.9c or 0.99c or 0.9999c
S C
that's one of those stupid things I don't even fully get about c
Like, it's kinda hard to conceptualize the idea of it being a speed limit cause obviously there are like... a lot of things moving far above c relative to other things >>1137439 see I just don't get it
Cause I get that you won't be able to like, observe something going faster than c, through whatever mumbojumbo, but if I'm moving 0.6c away from one thing, and something else is going 0.6c in the other direction relative to it, and it can see us moving those speeds, then I mean we've gotta be moving 1.2c away from each other, right?

yeah the farming aspect alone of Elin is super in depth There's a TON of foods you can grow, and they're all actually useful in different ways Like, corn is good for perception, so I've bred a strain of corn that has even more perception buffs, and now I'm slowly increasing the amount of them I'm growing But like, bananas are great for magic, so I'm trying to get a strain of banana trees with more magic related buffs There isn't one superfood you just use exclusively, you gotta diversify your farm to get good stuff
And I really like that
S C
I'm not entirely sure how to produce seasonings myself though, but I do have some residents who passively generate random seasonings each day, or at least they have a chance to I gotta figure out how to make specific seasonings, cause those add even more stat buffs to food when cooked and of course, that means you want particular seasonings for particular foods Like sugar or salt goes super well with bananas because salt and sugar also buff magic Salt I can at least get somewhat reliably by just going out and mining it at the coast, but it's still a bit of a trip so it's a little annoying

>>1137621 the way it works is when you plant \\\ When you harvest a seed you planted in your base, you have a chance to upgrade it, which gives it a +X modifier That +X is down one of several paths, chosen at random And once it's down one of them, it will never go back to another one Which means you need pure, unupgraded seeds to roll the dice until you get at least one in the line you want, and then you can use that to get more seeds of that line, while you burn or otherwise dispose of the unwanted modifiers
Initially it might seem like you can just get one of each line and send it, but that's difficult for a few reasons First, each type, and each + level, of the harvested product, only stacks with identical ones, meaning you'll fill up all your storage And secondly, the automated farming option in your base tends to unify your crops of the same species over time, so you're going to lose some of those strains one way or the other So you really want to get the best strain for each plant, and then mass produce that
But for that, you need a bunch of seeds to roll dice with until you get some of the strain you want
Food is super important in Elin, so it pays to be very particular about these things
Isn't the question "are viruses alive?" kinda like... dumb, for lack of a better term? Like, "alive" isn't some thing we're trying to figure out the boundaries of, we set those boundaries entirely on our own It's not like there is some fundamental "life" quality we're trying to suss out the edges of, we invented the concept and it doesn't correspond to anything in nature beyond what we decide its definition is, so whether a virus is a living organism or not is entirely a definitional question, right?
S C
I mean sure, that much can to some degree be said about most things, but I mean, when we're trying to figure out if something is magnetic or not, for example, that does correspond to an actual measurable quality of the thing in question, and it's not so simply a definitional question, because the definition refers to something we may or may not have the ability to be certain of, but might later
As a dumb example, if there was some rock we found, and we wanted to know if it's magnetic, we can do a lot of measurements and conclude "naw, not magnetic", but then later we could develop better tools, able to measure more minute stuff, and then we might go "turns out we were wrong on that one, fuckin' thing is magnetic actually" and it's not because we changed the definitions or learned more about what magnetism is or anything. We just got better at measuring it.
But whether something is alive or not doesn't really have an equivalent to that Theoretically sure we might some time in the future realize viruses do actually do the things we've defined as life, but that seems highly unlikely And even in that case, that's not what's being bickered about at this time. There's no real disagreement on whether it actually fits the criteria we have right now, whether we're right about that or not ultimately, the discussion seems to be centered around whether we've correctly defined "alive" in the first place, which is weird
It's like arguing whether we defined "magnetic" correctly after finding out that rock wasn't magnetic earlier. We can't be wrong about the definition of either, we made both up, it doesn't make any sense to argue the definition is wrong

I don't think that analogy really works Like, we can determine if something is magnetic or not based on concrete physics-based observable evidence I don't think we have a broadly agreed-upon categorization of what "life" is, let alone a list of conditions to reference to determine if the descriptor applies or not
