DBT is pretty much just cuck shit for therapists who don't know what they're doing. The entirety of DBT is just spicy CBT, which already sucks unless you have the most surface-level anxiety or depression possible. DBT is the attempt of Marsha Linehan to sell zen buddhism to people. In doing so, she eliminates everything that makes zen effective and she completely fails to understand even what zazen is. Despite calling the so-called system dialectical, she doesn't even have a functional understanding of dialectics. And the therapists who use it don't understand either.
DBT is basically what you get if you find any mass produced therapist off the street. No real training, no real understanding, just plug and play. Choosing the most generic option possible over a truly deep and individualized therapeutic modality is for clients that are terrified of themselves and only want to get better superficially.

DBT is extremely widespread in the US. I've never worked anywhere that didn't emphasize DBT and everyone I know who does private practice is trained in DBT. DBT is being adopted widely because it's a very simple system that doesn't require any theoretical understanding and can be utilized with a very wide number of people. Because of that, clinicians are much less skilled and have less training than someone who practices psychodynamic or existential/humanistic modalities, which take years of training to master. Unfortunately, DBT is always going to be lesser.
Funnily enough, DBT was originally marketed as a modality perfect for borderline personality disorder, but it completely ignored the etiology of the disorder and focuses entirely on the superficial symptoms. Awful, awful stuff. Completely unethical to simply address superficial symptoms and ignore the etiology. It's such a shame that DBT is becoming widespread. Psychotherapists these days don't understand the most basic ethical guidelines which is, of course, why motivational interviewing is so widely utilized now as well.
Sacrificing client care to make it easier on the clinician is just unforgivable. Settling for treating superficial symptoms is a cancer on the field of psychology. We have the potential to radically change people's lives and help them build unparalleled insight into themselves. We can give people the means to free themselves and become who they choose to be. But everyone would rather make a quick buck than help people! Or worse, they don't even understand that they're doing this. They don't even have the capacity to see what is possible. So they just keep collecting money, day in and day out, helping clients survive instead of thrive. Never building to the next step.
So I spend a lot of time helping younger clinicians develop the skills necessary to understand what's going on in the therapy session. I teach them multiple theoretical bases and basically everything that school ignored. And I make sure they're able to go out and develop themselves into true psychotherapists, beyond the basic low-level shit.
Kids don't even learn how to run a process group anymore! It's a crime! It's all DBT groups!

Motivational interviewing is a system of manipulation. It teaches you how to respond in a way to people that causes them to slowly move towards whichever position you want them to. For example, if you have a client that smokes, you might use MI to manipulate them into stopping smoking. When MI is used, the client is completely unaware that you're doing it to them which means that they aren't actually consenting to that. It's just covert manipulation by the therapist who thinks they know what's best for another person. It removes their agency. That's amoral but it's the standard of practice in mental health these days. Even nurses at hospitals are getting trained in MI now.
But that example exemplifies my concerns about the field with regard to ethics. People have no understanding of the fact that they're manipulating people! They won't even admit it to themselves! They just hide behind the idea that they know what's best. And people don't question it at all, even as they're violating consent.

It's an interview in the sense that you mostly are just letting them talk. You might ask a question occasionally, but mostly you're just letting them talk and repeating what they say back to them in a biased way that confuses them and makes them agree even if they wouldn't have agreed if asked explicitly. It's hard to explain, there's a whole system behind it. The word motivation is there because the deceit of the system is that you're "motivating them to make change".
