It doesn't have a spoken element aside from showing you how to pronounce vocabulary, but I'm a big fan of Wanikani for learning primarily the Kanji and Japanese vocabulary You don't get grammar and much syntax, but I also have resources for learning grammar on your own if you can use what's effectively a textbook for learning and don't prefer a structured service like Duolingo or the whatnot The other thing I would say is, once you can read the actual sentences, I think it becomes much easier to intuit the grammar with a bit of trial and error (and a bit of translator software assistance)

levels and classes are annoying to me it's like part of this inbred trope thing the industry has cause levels in contemporary isekai come from the influence of jrpgs (originally anyways) which comes from TRPGs (D&D primarily) while levels in TRPGs came about as an abstraction of ability developed specifically for games. there's no need for levels in fantasy light novels
it would actually be a lot less annoying if they were strict and mattered But most times it's like in this one, where the level and stats are themselves technically accurate, but don't ultimately decide anything unless the disparity is ENORMOUS
In actual pvp games, a difference of 5 levels, like 60 vs 65 is just about unsurmountable in a straight up fight
classes are actually just dumb though Thankfully there are no classes in this Sure the terminology exists, but they're not strict, they're just archetypes people end up in because if you start out your career focusing on daggers and cloak&dagger shit, you're gonna keep honing that rather than pivot to something else randomly Cause you're already real fucking good at that, you might as well keep getting better at that rather than start over from nothing with a whole different set of skills But nothing's STOPPING you from just going "fuck it, I wanna learn to use a maul, gonna pivot"
in overlord there basically are classes, but the protagonist is essenitally a god so who even cares they're not outright stated, but we do know from some characters that your path is pretty much set in stone and has little to do with what you yourself want Neia is an archer\ranger type, and there's jack shit she can do about that
isekai is the genre that natural selection is most observable in many tropes we see today were previously very advantageous adaptions but have been rendered useless in an ever-changing environment

the translation itself also gradually seems to be getting better Well, I have no doubt about the translation as such, it's really only ever been about the competency of the English writing itself After all, translation is about much more than simply swapping the language of the words, you gotta reconfigure the sentence so it works in the new language, especially when you're dealing with something as radically different as Japanese to English It's gonna be readable in a technical sense either way, but it's a lot easier to read when you've got someone fluent in English to re-do the wording

I did do a bit of a check, and the new style isn't quite as in line with the LN art as I remember the LN art being That said, I do think it's still closer to it than the original anime series The anime gave Holo for example much sharper features, more in line with what was generic anime style during that time period And I think the new anime captures more the softer features she has in the LN art I think the advances in digital colouring for animation can really help capture the warmth of her colours in the LN illustrations too A lot of anime from that '05-'10 era had very flat, cool colours, which kind of failed to get at the real beauty of the LN illustrations I'll have to see how it runs in the anime, but I think the newer colouring techniques capture that warmth much better
I do think I'm always gonna prefer the original voice for Holo though But a LOT of that is just like, bias towards the original because it's the original, not necessarily because of how well it fits her
Kinda like how they changed some voices in strike witches season 2 and I didn't like it at all

I think the fact that it's an isekai remains a key lynchpin for the story, but more because it's foundational for allowing the reader to better self-insert into the world Like, it's harder to self-insert into Frodo, a weird tiny humanoid with hairy feet who's lived his whole life in Middle Earth, even if he can be highly relatable at times But, when your character is a normal person from "our" Earth who's been pulled out of their dull, mundane, ordinary life into a fantasy realm, we can more better envision ourselves as that person
