I found an item in qud I hadn't seen before earlier
It's a bracelet that, when activated, projects an aura of "nullification"
Nullification in qud is, as I understand it, effectively a "no extra effects for you" type debuff
If your armor has +1 to STR, nullification makes it just armor, no STR for you
But I think if that STR comes from powering the armor, it remains, cause that's not an inherent like, enchantment type thing
Immediately as I put it on, the game went "you are carrying too much to move!"
So I look through the log like "what the shit did I pick up just now?"
I didn't pick a fucking thing up, I just happen to have 3 negative weight orbs in my inventory, for a total of -30 weight
The nullification turned them off, so now I just had my full weight without the -30

I honestly thought it wouldn't do that, because I thought the negative weight was just like, what those cubes weigh, but I guess it's not
Orbs, not cubes, but whatever

Anyway, qud is real fun with stuff like this
The sheer amount of items is utterly insane, I've yet to have a run where I didn't find something new I hadn't seen before, that's actually meaningfully unique, rather than just like "it's a sword, but this one's made from glass!"

When a group of people die and it's ruled a murder-suicide, is there like, a legal process akin to a trial for that, or is it simply declared by the police and that's how it is now?
Like do you get a trial of sorts if you're the accused murderer in those cases?

The coroner does an investigation into the facts, but there's no need for a trial because there isn't a penalty to be imposed by the Court.

I mean there are a few minor differences, but that's mostly just like, there are a few areas that are hand crafted, and there is a quest that stays the same for every playthrough that serves as the main quest (as well as some sidequests)
But most of it is different every time
There are sidequests you can get from village elders, and those are gonna be randomized, like they might task you with anything from retrieving an item from someone who stole it, to smoking out of a sacred hookah somewhere
The layouts of everything but a few select locations is randomized
Even the actual cure for various afflictions is a roulette, though they have a few predefined rules, so you have to figure it out through trial and error or reading a particular book you can get... somewhere or other
Most the books are just jumbled words, too lmao
A LOT of RNG goes into any given playthrough

the afflictions are some insane shit too, though
You've got the most harmless types, that are just like "hey your body part is replaced by this now, you can't wear anything there, but there are some upsides" like you can get a fungal colony growing on your hands or back or something, which has some defensive stats, reduces certain types of damage, and even generates some wax for you to use for whatever (pro tip: avoid fire at all costs because the wax burns like crazy)
And then you've got the more nasty stuff such as "you have contracted Fuck You. You no longer have a tongue. Unless you fix this and regrow it, or have telepathy, you're shit outta luck and unable to progress any quests ever"

i like the complexity
I feel like a lot of games that have graphics are very flat, like, theres some land and platforms, and there's some items, and the usual HP battle system, and you can walk around

but not many are like nethack where you can put a container inside a container inside a container or whatever, there's little nesting
always felt like there was more that could be done with computer and // computer graphics + depth, but most games don't go that far

i guess the complexity that most games bring these days is through having lots of collectible items and systems that interact with each other, rather than spatial depth

I mean, there is definitely a bit of a tradeoff between complexity and graphical detail
Something like qud or dorfs, you can have a LOT of complexity mechanically, because you don't have to render too much, but if you want it to look like GTA5, you're gonna end up with a real wonky looking game if you have a lot of systems, or you're going to spend enormous amounts of time and resources on animations and modelling work for the stuff that goes into it
For dorf and qud, it's just a set of numbers, rules, and a simple texture (or literally just dedicating a single ascii character to the thing )

I really just feel like from a software perspective there's so much potential in highly intricate dynamic worlds that most games don't exploit
I always liked games like A Link To The Past or The Minish Cap where there are these parallel spatial dimensions that are connected

overwatch is still interesting to me just because there are so many different ways to move, even if 50% of the time i just play rein
lots of different systems and ways to affect the environment with shields and CC
but the gameplay does get stale after a while

another really neat part about qud is it's like, really big into caves
it's called caves of qud, after all
And where most games will just have a buncha caves you can explore with entrances, qud actually has an item you can find (rare) or craft (recipe even rarer)
this item will dig a staircase 20 z levels down from wherever you're standing, and you can explore areas that otherwise might not have any real way to enter them, or would take you in a really long and convoluted up and down path across the map as you look for the path to that area

I managed to find the recipe in the shop, so now I'm harvesting EXP and valuable artifacts, as well as just plain valuables, and boy it's ramping my powerlevel up big time

I mean the entrances from the topsoil to the caves are still around, scattered about, but this item lets you kinda sequence break a few things lmao
Like I'm pretty sure I can just outright enter this one stronghold type place that I'm supposed to do a quest to be granted entry to, cause it really is just 5 z levels down from the top soil, and I know where it is

Well both because I've been there before, it's part of the main quest, and also I've been at the gates of it to get the quest already in this playthrough
Some spots like this one are always in the exact same location, and the layout is always the same

The place I'm supposed to go, I could similarly sequence break with this, cause getting down there is a pain in the fucking ass through normal means, but since it too is only like 5 levels down, and the location is static, I could legit just dig down to the thing I'm supposed to get
Which I might end up doing, that place is where you're likely to get the No More Tongue Disease, and I didn't spec into regeneration so it'd be a fucking pain to deal with that
Might still end up contracting the disease either way, but at least I can minimize my risks

It's just the item that bores down into the earth
It automatically makes a staircase for you until it hits 20 levels down
it's a heavy fucker, and super rare, but actually crafting it is relatively cheap in that it uses mostly common components
Real good for getting stuff you're not REALLY supposed to have yet, just cause it takes a lot of time and annoyance to reach much beyond 15 levels down through normal exploration

Well the exact make isn't specified or anything, but the texture is pure white, so I like to imagine it's marble

Also everything in qud is part of one faction or another

mammals with wings? different faction, may or may not like the birds
shellfish? bet your ass they're a faction
of course there are a few typical faction-factions, too, but it's not like any of them are outright political, they're just "this group of people" like the villagers of a particular village, that sorta thing
But what makes that exciting is you can gain or lose favor with factions if you kill a notable character
their own faction will hate you of course, big debuff
But others might have kinda thought that guy sucked ass, and be like "you're actually pretty cool for pouring lava on that asshole"
and other again might have actually liked him despite not being in the same faction
That's all info you can see before you decide to fight them, so it's not like it just randomly fucks you
But if your relations with their faction is bad enough, they're gonna fight you whether you wanna or not, and you're just gonna have to run away if they're liked by someone you wanna be friends with

the game really is kinda designed to be broken in a multitude of ways though
it's permadeath, but you can get a psychic mutation that lets you testrun x amount of turns in advance, starts at 16 when base level
basically, if you don't like what happened in those turns, you can go back
if you liked it, you can stay in that future
that combined with some other stuff that has RNG can let you ascend to fucking godhood, cause there are items for duping stuff, there are items for duping NPCs (with their inventory. yes, you can indeed print the NPC cloning item and thus any item you want this way), as well as an item for making NPCs fall in love with you and be a companion for a set amount of turns, a really high amount, as well as give you anything you request from their inventory for free
Early on in this playthrough, I came across a jeweler in the caves, so I slammed the love potion in his thigh and he just gave me all his valuables, then fought for me

They turn hostile once it wears off though, so it's worth being a bit careful, but the timer on it is real fuckin' long, and until it wears off you have a perfectly loyal fighter by your side

You can combine these by cloning a merchant after giving them tonnes of valuables and other stuff you want, as well as at least one cloning solution, and then you can just go buck wild with it

the ingredients are rare, but technically I only need a few to get the ball rolling initially, and then it's smooth sailing

Once I get that, combine it with some real strong stuff that uses power, I'm gonna be a god

There's an item that drains power like crazy, but puts a forcefield around you that nothing can penetrate from the outside
Using batteries on it is pretty shitty cause it really chunks through them, but I generate more power than it uses already, I just need to get one and make it hook into my godzilla-gland

OUTWARD actually, surprisingly, has a very cool magic system
The execution is dogshit due to user interface, but the actual system is pretty neat
You've got a whole slew of spells, but casting them is a matter of using the right base component spells in sequence
Like you might have a spell, actually I think you get this one as soon as you specc into mana, that just creates a little flame. Not even sure if it does damage or if it's basically a fucking zippo lighter
But if you first put down a fire rune on the floor, casting that flame is now a fireball. if you use a lightning rune, lighting, etc.
But then there's like, what if you put down both? you get another effect
and you combine all of these base components to create a really varied selection of spells, it's not even exclusively spells, your flintlock pistol shoots lighting in the lightning AoE and stuff
And basically the more runes you combine, the more crazy your resulting spell is gonna be

but the interface sucks ass, and while there's like fucking 30 of these base runes or something, you get a grand total of 8 hotkeys to use, for absolutely anything, including potions and whatever
So using magic in outward sucks big ass despite the system itself actually being one of the best I've seen. very akin to magicka except a lot more involved, and also not entirely ignorable by just combining like 2 elements into a death laser over and over

Yeah
Outward does a lot of stuff really well, but it fumbles a lot of it in other ways
Like even getting magic isn't done at character creation, you never start with even 1 mana, or any spells or anything
You have to venture into this one mountain and at the center, you can PERMANENTLY sacc HP and Stam for a mana pool
you can adjust how much you wanna sacc, too, so if you only intend to use a little bit of magic, you can just sacrifice like 10 out of 100 HP
but if you're gonna be a mage through and through, you can dump 50% of your hp and stam for a sizeable mana pool

rune combination sounds pretty neato

there's no such thing as a level in outward either
everything is gear and player skill
the hp-for-mana trade is the only time you ever alter something amounting to stats throughout the whole game
well, there's temporary stuff like potions and food and whatever, but nothing like "you now have +1 str" or whatever

unfortunately it's held back by a lot of issues ranging from small to fucking annoying
Like there's no fast travel, which is actually cool in concept, but the world is a bit too empty and a bit too large, so it results in a lot of just running from a to b
and also melee combat is... painful, because a lot of enemies will stunlock you real easy, and that's just death
although you never actually die, you're just given a "defeat scenario", which can be anything from "you were enslaved" to "someone rescued you and brought you to town"
that latter one is actually heinous because it entirely undermines the lack of fast travel
you don't lose anything, there's no EXP to lose in the first place and you keep your items, so effectively the game is telling you to break your legs by jumping off a mountainside to fast travel and save time

the world building is pretty good though

it's like in minecraft if you play with keepinventory, whenever you get stuck in a cave and can't find the way out or really just get impatient, you dig down and jump into lava

i really want like an mmo thats not about grinding but just chilling
and maybe casting spells now and then with your witch buddies

The Jacked modification means it's tapping into the electricity I generate myself, which is generated faster than this thing drains

well, I may have maxxed out my defense, for all intents and purposes, but my actual damage output still leaves much to be desired
guess I'm gonna have to delve deeper and find a better gun

It also appears that it is possible to clone yourself, dominate the clone, and use it to kill your original body, granting you a new self

I mean you can transfer your consciousness to any conscious creature in the game, really

with dominate, you can assume direct control of pretty much any creature, barring robots and a few select types of creature
and if your original body dies in one blow while you're dominating something, you're stuck in the new body now
it'd be a neat way to sorta reroll a character from scratch, but I'm not even sure if NPCs get to have mutations and stuff, so you might be stuck with a stinky character overall then

It's apparently a viable strat for psychic mains to just pump their domination ability as fast and hard as they can, so when the Big Beefy Psychics come hunting for them later on, they can easily be dominated and used to kill off the original
when you become a powerful psychic in qud, you start getting hunted by psychics from around the world, and even from other universes, and they tend to have real good stats

Of course, there is no substitute for being able to take a hit
Even with my permanent forcefield, there is an actual reason I said I'm basically invulnerable barring unholy amounts of damage output
There IS an enemy with exactly that, it fires one of those rocket racks they put on trucks at you, it's got a forcefield of its own, and it's got a lotta HP

I suppose technically you could dominate one of those and be pretty set

In the interest of seeing just how absurdly powerful I can become in qud, I have a new project I'm gonna give a spin
There's a skill in the game, proseletyze
The basic gist is, you roll an Ego check against a sentient creature you select, and if you win, they're now a loyal follower of yours indefinitely
You can only have one, however
But, from what I understand, if you dominate someone, you can actually like, level up and distribute points
what if I can have a gaggle of merchants following me around, all wearing suped up gear so they don't die?
I proseletyze one, then I dominate them
then I level that one up until it can do the same to another
at which point, I do not repeat this process, instead I merely clone that fucker and have him proseletyze his own clone
said clone will have all his stats and skills baked in already, and proseletyze doesn't trigger hostilities when it fails, so it's very safe
As for actually leveling him up in the first place, that's relatively simple
While levels are of course very important, there aren't level or stat restrictions for gear, so I can kit him out with some of my old stuff before I take over his mind and go blasting the really high level shit to quickly farm EXP
They DO become hostile when domination ends, but I think that's like, temporary hostility, not permanent

Not that I entirely mind, a lot of it is still actually pretty good, but it does almost seem like people are drawing less because the search results are gonna be filled with the AI art
That and all of it is using the same model, which only appears to really have the one art style, or maybe that's just the one it defaults to\is actually competent at

I guess part of the seeming decline in actual human made works can be attributed to me mostly searching for less recent characters in the first place, though, and aside from a few very dedicated artists, those tend to get very little new art anyway
Like as far as competent Haruhi art goes, haruhisky is like the only one still at it
