Like recently the city raised fees for applying to build mid-rise multi-home buildings At which point now it takes about as much time, and money, to apply to build a mid-rise apartment as it would be to build a luxury detached house or high-rise condo So at that point, why not just get the best return on your investment and build the condo? When it came to upgrading my PC I hadn't considered that my fan might have been aged out by the more up-to-date CPU socket Which means now I also have to buy a new fan, hah hah Which means really all I have left to buy before I have more or less bought an entirely new PC is a PSU and a case So maybe. Maybe What the hell, just make a fresh new one. Considering the expenses I've paid for this, the remaining PSU and case would run me like 11% of the overall costs of a new PC Or I can eschew a new PSU since mine is probably sufficient as is and only have to spend like maybe another hundred dollars for a new case Either way I need to get a new fan, so
Kirara 🍄 大医 /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
I've got a Noctua NH-U12S CPU fan if you want it. I got it when I was building my PC but I didn't use it, just used the fan that came with my CPU and haven't had any problems at all. So the fan has been sitting in a box for upwards of a year.
Anno
That's the fan I've currently got running in my PC Although I think Noctua reuses their model names, like, mine only goes up to AMD motherboard models 3+, where as my new motherboard is AM4 **AMD motherboard models AM3+ I've checked with an eyeball comparison and the bracket for fitting AMD motherboards that comes with the fan definitely doesn't fit onto the motherboard
Since you bought yours a year and change back it might be the more up to date model which will fit AM4 motherboards, but it is kind of hard to know for certain Like even the Amazon page for the fan I bought back in 2016 has been updated for the new model which would fit
Anno
The other thing is I might be able to buy a fan and have it arrive here as soon as tomorrow and have this PC upgrade over before the weekend is done Although going for a full PC build would probably have me put everything off until two weekends from now because I'll be busy next weekend
Kirara 🍄 大医 /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\

It's very likely, especially if it's a new CPU Even the motherboard I bought at the same-ish time as my new CPU needs a BIOS update Thankfully Gigabyte has a neat way of letting you flash a BIOS without needing anything more than the motherboard, a PSU, and a USB drive so I can do that as I'm putting together the PC, regardless of if I just upgrade or build a new one outright

S C
She can move them? Like the place they're fastened to?
Anno
Her New Year's outfit came with a hair option which let her move them to be oni horns on the top of her head So it seems like they're more than just fancy hair bits
Anno
Like with Vtuber lore, this should be taken with a grain of casual acceptance It's not like this stuff is carefully thought out or anything
S C
Yeah that's fair It's in the spirit of fun at the end of the day
S C
After a little bit of practice, it turns out drawing the a isn't actually that difficult It just looks far more complicated than it is
Anno
Like the hiragana a?
S C
yeah it and a few others just look super complicated to actually draw, but just seeing the step by step 3lines for it made it much easier to understand I guess there's a reason they teach stroke order in Japanese
Anno
I had a bit of an obsessive period in high school where I hand wrote out literal pages of each hiragana, to the point where I had the manner of writing them pretty much memorized It's been quite a while since then so I don't really know if I could write them all out anymore, but I do have a pretty good memory of each character If I had to write it out from, like, a series of hiragana in front of me, they would probably all be in the correct stroke order
S C
Pretty impressive I'm starting to feel like it'll be a good idea to practice writing the characters a bit more than I have, honestly, cause it works the memory muscles
Rei !p8eYCadcMo
I do kana stroke order correctly Kanji, not so much But my handwriting is embarrassingly bad and I don't anticipate ever needing to write anything long by hand in Japanese so its not a huge issue.
Anno
>>1046700 It's certainly not a useless skill to train, especially since it does help you integrate in to the handwriting system for Japanese I miiiight be wrong here, but I think kana and Kanji follow a similar rational for how you move through the stroke order So understanding the nature of stroke order in kana will train you for Kanji stroke order
Rei !p8eYCadcMo
Japanese people will judge on your handwriting, its a cultural tjing for them.
S C
The main reason I haven't put much effort into it is I can't see a single real life situation where I'll have an actual use for writing japanese Typing, maybe, if nothing else it can be useful for searching for stuff online, but writing? like with a pen? that's very unlikely to come up for the rest of my life, even if I were to go to Japan on vacation sometime or something
Anno
But yeah, especially as a gaijin, you probably won't encounter many instances where knowing stroke order will be of much use to you You won't be writing out much Kanji by hand unless it's a part of your learning system There are online dictionaries which sort Kanji by stroke order, so it can be useful for trying to look up a specific Kanji you know the number of strokes in but not much else But in pretty much any situation you would likely have better jumping off points
I think ultimately, stroke order is of the most use to you if it's useful for helping you memorize stuff Any other situation is almost certainly going to be an extremely rare occasion
This is, of course, discounting the situation where you actually want to write proper Japanese out by hand Which I can honestly relate to but also understand why it might be entirely irrelevant
S C
I mean if I ever have a gun to my head and have to write something in japanese, kana will do right? Like if you just write something in hiragana, it's legible, no? You'll be looked at the same way one might an adult writing in ALL CAPS, but it's readable anyway?
S C
But it'd be nice to be able to at least As just another thing I'm capable of doing even if I never do
Anno
Really unless you go around proclaiming you've passed your N2 or N1 examination no Japanese person is going to expect you to be able to write out (or type out, for that matter) authentic Japanese text
S C

My character got a crit against a dragon and pierced it's skull with an arrow and it got injured really bad and also failed a save and ran away from my character in fear. Was pretty pog. This was before the dragon was summoned.

I continue to be impressed with just how well-planned honzuki has been the whole time Even the INK! THE INK! I mean you can reason it out from what you've already got, potentially, but the actual explanation for that stuff is like, another arc in the future

what the hell is "ON reading" and "KUN reading" as far as kanji go? I'm gonna fuckin' read even if I gotta look up individual kanji until they stick, I'll scrounge my way through individual pages like a damn gremlin
Kirara 🍄 大医 /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
Different readings of the kanji used in different situations. For example, 山 can be read with the on reading, さん or the kun reading やま。
S C
is there a particular rule for when which one is used? I mean in a very technical sense I don't need to be able to sound them out if I can nail the meaning into my skull, but still
Anno
The ON reading, or on'yomi, is the Japanese phonetic approximation of what the Chinese character which has become the Kanji sounds like when they were introduced to Japanese KUN reading, or kun'yomi, is usually more the original Japanese word which has been applied to the character as they share meaning
I mentioned this a week or two back when I was first talking about how Kanji can have multiple readings, but while it is by no means a hard rule and there are many, many exceptions, there is a kind of rule here On'yomi are usually used when the Kanji is in conjunction with other Kanji or Japanese vocabulary to form a more complex word e.g., the Kanji 波, or "wave" (like water waves), has an on'yomi of は. When combined with the Kanji 電, with an on'yomi of でん, it forms the word 電波, read でんぱ because は is a weird kana which can be affected by the ん before it But 波 also has a kun'yomi of なみ which is used to refer -which is used when you're talking about waves as a noun, such as the waves coming in from the sea So when you're seeing a Kanji as a standalone Kanji, or in some other situations, they're often using the kun'yomi But again let me stress that there are many exceptions here and some Kanji will have multiple on'yomi and/or kun'yomi and knowing which one needs to be used in a situation relies on both situational context and just language experience
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
you might as well ask why we use the word draught but pronounce it draft over in canada
S C
So this is roughly "ryoshusushu kaye gi"? roughly "meeting of the lords" or so? It's the first symbols on the page, but it makes sense based on the story thus far
It'd be a lot easier if this book wasn't in jpg format, I could just highlight and jam stuff into google instead of trying to render the kanji by hand
Anno
You're mostly accurate but with a few errors The hiragana write-out for those Kanji would be りょうしゅかいぎ, or "ryoushukaigi" But your translation is more or less correct 会議 is pretty straightforwardly "meeting", but you could also interpret it as "council", or "meeting" In a bureaucratic sense it could also be a "congress" I would say the closest to the author's intent would probably "Meeting of the Lords" or "Council of the Lords"
S C
Oh, I must have misinterpreted the reading parts of the kanji lookup I'm using Also yeah, in the official translation, it's "archduke conference" I'm pretty sure But I don't wanna color my attempt to learn the meanings by referring too heavily to what I know is in the official translation, it could lead to issues later
I'm gonna have to take a closer look at the reading information to figure out how to interpret it now, it seems like maybe I used like, several of a few given possible pronounciations, at once, and didn't realize they were meant to be separate
Anno
Well 領主 is made up of the Kanji for "territory" and "lord/master", so you can see why the standard interpretation of the word is "lord" It's literally "master of a territory" The fact that it is translated as Archduke is probably the circumstantial understanding of the world of Honzuki Maybe even a personal insight from the original author
S C
hm, without giving too much away, the first time it came up, it was probably easy to tell that's what it was based on the contents of the story up until that point that and the first kanji does also mean "fief", so "duke" makes a lot of sense, lord of a fief
S C
Hm, even though the pronounciations on this lookup seem to be a bit difficult to figure out, at least for me, I can still just recreate the sentence in google translate using copy paste, so now I've got a whole sentence that I can at least understand Your help is very much appreciated though, helps a lot to be able to bounce stuff off of someone who actually understands this stuff a bit more than I do
Anno
If your phone is advanced enough to translate stuff through its camera you could try using that to translate the book JPGs Although rout typing the sentences out into Google Translate is also a good way of familiarizing yourself with the skill of Japanese typing
S C
I tried using my phone's picture translation, but it kinda just turned into gibberish, I don't think it's really too well suited for this kinda translation. It's kinda low-res too, unfortunately. That and well, I wouldn't be able to learn what each symbol means or anything, so I'd end up having to rely on it
It'd be a good idea if it was reliable enough for it though
S C
god damn there's a lotta kanji in this, but I wanna continue the story the main annoyance is really having to draw them all out with a mouse, but there's no real way around that At least I have background weeb knowledge so I should be able to connect meaning to what I'm scraping through, and at least up until a point, recognizing the kanji should be doable

This kanji lookup thing also lists what year of school you're expected to learn the kanji in question, and these seem to range between year2 and year5 Gotta get started on wanikani for real, get through this shit
>>1046844 Wanikani doesn't actually teach Kanji by the lesson plan of the Japanese education system, which emphasizes on some more common Kanji which grade schoolers would be encountering at an earlier time It goes kind of more on an intensity of Kanji system, having you learn the Kanji which are the simplest in visual complexity and proceding up from that It's advantageous because Wanikani relies heavily on the radical components of Kanji so by solidifying in your memory these simple Kanji first, you already have them memorized when you see them in -them as components in more complex Kanji The trade off is you won't see some very common useage Kanji or other vocab that would be considered "simple" until much later because their Kanji are more visually complex
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
its may 23 and today was the first day i felt like going out for a ride without some kind of light jacket or hoodie april 25 was a lie
S C
>>1046846 So it's like it teaches you the various basic "strokes" that make up kanji, and then throws kanji with more of those components at you over time, so you're basically learning to recognize them because you recognize the arrangement of those strokes? So essentially they become "words" without anything like spelling or whatever
Anno
Yeah, pretty much And each Kanji will have a mnemonic based off the radicals which build it, which is the main vector it uses to reinforce the arrangement Radicals are less like strokes (although there are some single-stroke radicals), and more like building components from which more complex Kanji are constructed And in some cases, those more complex Kanji are squished or simplified and made into radicals themselves for even more complex Kanji
Growing up in Japan, a kid would have better systems of ingraining these Kanji into their head than understanding how they're put together For an analogy I guess, a kid growing up learning English has better ways of learning the meaning of a word than memorizing how it's spelled and having some mnemonic from that spelling which reinforces the meaning of the word When you're natively immersed in a language you learn the language through applied use and osmosis Those of us who are distanced from Japan and Japanese-speaking environments can benefit from tools like Wanikani since our brains aren't kid-brains anymore
>>1046849 that makes a lotta sense, yeah there's no real rules or anything that will tell you why "lawyer" means that, after all, for example But you just sorta know that once you've learned it cause you speak the language Well, for "lawyer" in particular, the "law" part makes it pretty obvious it's related to the law at least, but that's just a random example
Anno
>>1046847 Temperatures have been bouncing all over the place here I think in the past two weeks I've seen it range from like ~5C (albeit as a low in the middle of the night) to ~22C
S C
Though the spelling analogy obviously has some minor flaws since unlike spelling, a typo can change it into a very, very different word and make stuff utterly incomprehensible And with the varied meanings of kanji, I sorta expect you might end up with a word that does actually fit
S C
One other thing is, with how you put together stuff like the kanji for "territory" and the kanji for "ruler" or whatever to get, in the instance earlier, "duke", reading it seems a lot more interpretive than plain English is? Like you gotta mentally mash them together to get the meaning that makes sense based on the totality of the kanji involved? That seems like something you only really get with practice
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
i can hear it but i can't see it - where'd // 's that drone?
Anno
>>1046855 Well any translation between languages as separate as English and Japanese are is never going to be a science, it's always going to be an interpretive artform Like, 領主 is likely a pre-existing word in Japanese vocabulary, but as we talked about earlier, in a literal translation it's just "lord of a territory" For the average use in Japanese literature, it's probably used to mean whatever their equivalent of a landed petty lord is in Feudal Japan, or when used to talk about European landed lords Without knowing what you know about the later bits of the series, my assumption is the use of it to mean duke or archduke is based on the author's research into feudal Europe, considering the historical accuracy of the mundane aspects of Honzuki's world to that time period I would be shocked if the author didn't come from either an academic or personal interest background in European history Which probably means they understand things like dukes and archdukes and can seek Japanese equivalents for those terms when writing the novels
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
what the hecc it actually is a nice day today
Anno
>>1046856 watch out, you could be eating a rocket from a TB2 any second
S C
>>1046857 Ah, yeah, I 'know' this but it often slips my mind, but really translation is always going to be interpretive in the first place Also yeah, the overall structure of the society in Honzuki does make it seem like the author really does know what they're talking about structure-wise It's very believable, even if obviously there are some differences due to Fantasy
I wonder if there really even is an analogue to shrine maidens in English. "Priestess" for gender-based reasons doesn't really make proper sense, after all.
>>1046860 Priestess is a pretty good enough translation, since both shrine maiden and priestess are female-gendered terms The word in Japanese is 巫女, which is composed of a vague character which can mean a variety of spiritual things, and 女, which is the Kanji for female
>>1046863 I suppose a point of confusion is that Honzuki's religion isn't much of a "shrine" based structure, especially considering its clear analogies to feudal European Catholicism And even then it's not like anyone really has a small church or something to look after, which you might be able to fit the "shrine" part of shrine maiden into They're obviously using it as a rank below priest/priestess levels but since the church is such an insitutional system in Honzuki, it feels a bit weird, yeah
S C
The primary issue is that "priest" is its own rank, at least in Honzuki, with shrine maidens (admittedly both male and female) are ranked below, and I also think "priests" are all male Maybe it's just a quirk of Japanese that doesn't fully work in terms of translation, and that's why they stuck with shrine maiden in the translation
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
do you prefer horizontal lens flare
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
or vertical
S C
>>1046862 Yeah, it does seem like they weren't really able to find a better term for the slightly lower rank, basically Oh, point of note though, and this really isn't a spoiler of any import so I feel comfortable sharing it, there are actually some minor shrines around the duchy, though the church is where all the church's officials are, it's not like the smaller shrines have any blue robes at all, or even grey robes aside from one, but that comes later The Church in Ehrenfest is like, the Church of the duchy
Anno
Also I'm failing to find the correct reading for it, but I swear there's a translation a Japanese word pronounced みこ which translates more as "divine child" I don't know if that's just another interpretation of 巫女 Although apparently even just 巫 ist - on its own can be read みこ so maybe that's where it comes from
Anno
>>1046865 I don't know if I like either But the vertical one kinda makes it look like Earth has its own orbital ring
Anno
The other funny thing about 巫女 is it carries with it the connotation of female virginity, since it's used to refer to shrine maidens whose role it is in part to exercise the purity of the virgin soul You can actually read 巫 as shrine maiden as well, but in that situation it's read as かんなぎ, and the aspect of virginity and purity is absent
S C
>>1046867 I mean that does make sense shrine maidens are, essentially, divine, one can say
so the "ko" at the end, the 女 is basically what adds the purity into the word lotta little quirks of Japanese
Anno
Maybe, but not because 女 carries any particular connotation of purity It's pretty cut and straight just the Kanji for female or woman, which by itself isn't necessary pure
Anno
Honestly I think 巫女 is one of those more irregular Japanese words, of which the verbal word existed long before Chinese characters were adopted into Kanji, and the Kanji writing was chosen more because it matches the meaning and not at all because the combined Kanji create what it sounds like
Anno
Normally these kind of words have a single Kanji which comes to express them Like 体, can be read からだ, which is likely what pre-literacy Japan said when they were talking about their body I wouldn't be surprised when Kanji came to Japan that there was no single Chinese character which aptly conveyed the distinction between a ritualistically pure virgin shrine maiden and the not necessarily pure female diviner or shaman, so they used the conjoined Kanji of 巫女 to distinguish from 巫
Anno
Okay that's the last post of Kanji analysis I'm doing from my phone
S C
