When it came to upgrading my PC I hadn't considered that my fan might have been aged out by the more up-to-date CPU socket Which means now I also have to buy a new fan, hah hah Which means really all I have left to buy before I have more or less bought an entirely new PC is a PSU and a case So maybe. I've got a Noctua NH-U12S CPU fan if you want it. I got it when I was building my PC but I didn't use it, just used the fan that came with my CPU and haven't had any problems at all. So the fan has been sitting in a box for upwards of a year.

That's the fan I've currently got running in my PC Although I think Noctua reuses their model names, like, mine only goes up to AMD motherboard models 3+, where as my new motherboard is AM4 **AMD motherboard models AM3+ I've checked with an eyeball comparison and the bracket for fitting AMD motherboards that comes with the fan definitely doesn't fit onto the motherboard

I had a bit of an obsessive period in high school where I hand wrote out literal pages of each hiragana, to the point where I had the manner of writing them pretty much memorized It's been quite a while since then so I don't really know if I could write them all out anymore, but I do have a pretty good memory of each character If I had to write it out from, like, a series of hiragana in front of me, they would probably all be in the correct stroke order

But yeah, especially as a gaijin, you probably won't encounter many instances where knowing stroke order will be of much use to you You won't be writing out much Kanji by hand unless it's a part of your learning system There are online dictionaries which sort Kanji by stroke order, so it can be useful for trying to look up a specific Kanji you know the number of strokes in but not much else But in pretty much any situation you would likely have better jumping off points
I think ultimately, stroke order is of the most use to you if it's useful for helping you memorize stuff Any other situation is almost certainly going to be an extremely rare occasion

Growing up in Japan, a kid would have better systems of ingraining these Kanji into their head than understanding how they're put together For an analogy I guess, a kid growing up learning English has better ways of learning the meaning of a word than memorizing how it's spelled and having some mnemonic from that spelling which reinforces the meaning of the word When you're natively immersed in a language you learn the language through applied use and osmosis Those of us who are distanced from Japan and Japanese-speaking environments can benefit from tools like Wanikani since our brains aren't kid-brains anymore

Though the spelling analogy obviously has some minor flaws since unlike spelling, a typo can change it into a very, very different word and make stuff utterly incomprehensible And with the varied meanings of kanji, I sorta expect you might end up with a word that does actually fit
One other thing is, with how you put together stuff like the kanji for "territory" and the kanji for "ruler" or whatever to get, in the instance earlier, "duke", reading it seems a lot more interpretive than plain English is? Like you gotta mentally mash them together to get the meaning that makes sense based on the totality of the kanji involved? That seems like something you only really get with practice

The primary issue is that "priest" is its own rank, at least in Honzuki, with shrine maidens (admittedly both male and female) are ranked below, and I also think "priests" are all male Maybe it's just a quirk of Japanese that doesn't fully work in terms of translation, and that's why they stuck with shrine maiden in the translation

The other funny thing about 巫女 is it carries with it the connotation of female virginity, since it's used to refer to shrine maidens whose role it is in part to exercise the purity of the virgin soul You can actually read 巫 as shrine maiden as well, but in that situation it's read as かんなぎ, and the aspect of virginity and purity is absent
so the "ko" at the end, the 女 is basically what adds the purity into the word lotta little quirks of Japanese

Honestly I think 巫女 is one of those more irregular Japanese words, of which the verbal word existed long before Chinese characters were adopted into Kanji, and the Kanji writing was chosen more because it matches the meaning and not at all because the combined Kanji create what it sounds like

Normally these kind of words have a single Kanji which comes to express them Like 体, can be read からだ, which is likely what pre-literacy Japan said when they were talking about their body I wouldn't be surprised when Kanji came to Japan that there was no single Chinese character which aptly conveyed the distinction between a ritualistically pure virgin shrine maiden and the not necessarily pure female diviner or shaman, so they used the conjoined Kanji of 巫女 to distinguish from 巫
