I suspect it's probably period-accurate. Especially the stuff we see on the Ainu side, since this series was kind of a chance for the author to show off Ainu culture. If I remember my history correctly we're past the point of the Meiji Restoration, but since we're kinda out in the boonies, I guess we don't see the elegance of Tokyo. So I guess we get the weird fashion the peasants wore.

Travelling entertainers like this circus though being spies is pretty period-accurate too. Entertainers experienced a broader freedom of movement than other private citizens and were also generally looked down upon, and that disdain can serve as a good cloak.

There's something to be said about having a villain who's entirely unredeemable. Just someone developed to be absolutely hated. I think nuance is good for antagonist characters but some times it's also good to just have someone who's straight filthy. There are real people like that, after all.

the less important changes, which I actually miss: Some people share the same sentiment that we thought Mirarose was a lot younger when reading She's described as wearing a tattered dress, and that all of her dresses are tattered. Her cooking wakes Elaina in the morning soundin g like an enemy attack, and Elaina even hears a scream, and yet it's perfectly normal food. Apparently her cooking process is what tears all her dresses, and Elaina wants to see how she cooks. Elaina jumps out to save Mirarose actually just before the things head flies off, and it bleeds regular blood and for a second Elaina assumes it's Mirarose's. They kept the head flying off in Elaina's direction but not the confusion.
The bigger changes I like though are the ending. Normally queenie is completely right in the head albeit extremely creepy and Elaina just wants to leave as fast as possible. Her being broken works better imo.
Oh and when they're joking around to calm Mirarose down pre-battle, they make a joke that since all her dresses are tattered that her underwear is part of her battle uniform, and it's an attack with sex appeal. Considering the author wanted to keep this all ages and specifically asked for no underwear shots that could be a reason for that being removed.
That's about all I've got to say for this week.

One of the advantages of a series being a collection of short stories. You can kinda just write starting from whenever.
I'm always envious of Japan's publishing industry though. They provide so many opportunities to enter it.
While I don't usually give info on what's coming up (usually I'm not privy to the knowledge when we watch), this weeks' episode will be the last chapter of book 1, so I think we're hitting a point of no return! A little sad that we probably won't get to see Capitalism Elaina animated, but that means we get to move on to book 2.

Hata, the mangaka for this and Hayate, was a former assistant of Kumeta. So the weird monologues/rants into a comedic declaration is kind of something they both share.
It does have a hayate feel to it but I actually like it I didn't like hayate much

Well I've talked about my nostalgia for Hayate before. This series has been hitting the same kinds of notes that made me enjoy it though. These characters just have a certain something that makes me enjoy seeing them do stuff.
