How do people do all these crazy things in After Effects...

Fuck fire and smoke. All these masks are crazy.

Can I just animate corners? Why can't I animate corners.

Please

Anno
I don't know the first step of doing anything in any Adobe program.
Aside from Flash, but even then I only know the first three steps of doing anything in Flash.

Do people even still use Flash.
Anno
can't provide any useful input either

Anno
read any nice manga lately?
Anno
Someone dumped the first couple chapters of Asano Inio's new manga a couple days back.
Though I'unno if that could be considered nice.

I reread Bonnouji the other week; that was definitely nice.
Anno
synopsis for bonnouji does seem nice
i probably can't really appreciate asano works properly just read DDDDD mostly for humor
i've been reading rocket pencil
it's cute but some things are kinda really bad when you look at it from a non comedy view
Anno
His new work is especially depressing and soul-flattening too.
Like at least Oyasumi Punpun had weird dorky moments or brief flashes of heartwarming in amongst all the misery of life.
But the new work is just drenched in misery.
Anno
i don't like sad
today in class the guy next to me was reading koe no katachi on his phone
he almost threw it and exclaimed what the fuck is this ending
Anno
I'm pretty strong against sad.
It takes a particularly good piece of character writing to make me feel for a character enough to sympathize with their sadness, and when I do, I usually enjoy the feeling it brings about.
Feeling sadness can be a sort of refreshing experience.

The prior came innate. My literary autism gives me a good resistance to feeling things for shoddy writing. Developing an enjoyment of it is probably the strain of years of training.
Anno
were you always strong or was it years of training
Anno
But if you haven't read Bonnouji I would heartily recommend it.
There's a lot of heart-warming spirit in the story and the characters are really relate-able.
Anno
It can be a bit idyllic at times, but not in a way that I feel tears you out of the story and makes you think "there's no way this could happen in real life".
Which is a good balance to strike for something comfy and warm.
Some times I find a lot of comfy series are too good and too perfect, which jars me a bit.
Anno
when do you find unrealism acceptable?
Anno
Depends on the material.
A utopia can be fascinating if the characters and story are the main weight of the piece.
Something utterly impossible can be disregarded if it allows something really cool to happen.
Like it's a bit of an old-fashioned analogy but a lot of Gurren Lagann is stupid when looked at realistically or practically.
But it's a show about giant robots punching each other with drills. Reality is suspended for the coolness factor.
Anno
well i don't mean just the setting i guess
like the way characters interact or their relations
Anno
That one is a bit harder to put together I guess.
'Cause what's the difference between "characters that interact weirdly or unrealistically" and "characters that interact in a way that is culturally totally alien to my understanding of interaction?"
The line can get really blurry, especially when you involve fantasy settings or settings in cultures that are considerably foreign to the one I was raised in.
So I guess I take it with a grain of salt and adjust how I feel as it goes on.
Really
Anno
Er scratch that Really I wasn't going anywhere with it.
Really.
Anno
i'd say it might be kinda lazy to wave away things as culture at least in the case where it's a fictional one unless a lot of worldbuilding was done
Anno
Perhaps, but that would be a decision I come to after finishing a piece, not in the middle of it.
But that argument was also specifically put together with Japanese media in mind too.
Like I may have had a lot of experience in observing Japanese culture and its relevance to interaction, but there are still undeniable huge depths and nuances that I don't get.
So someone acting weirdly in Japanese media could definitely be a cultural difference I'm just unable to pick up on.
Or maybe it IS just shoddy writing.
It's really, really hard to be certain just on the spot.
Anno
oh no
what if you've been unknowingly enjoying bad writing
Anno
No big deal.
It's not a crime to enjoy things of poor quality.
Anno
but so many people say that enjoying SAO is a crime
surely it's illegal
Anno
Shirley ain't got no say in the matter.
Anno
who?
Anno
don't call me Shirley
