If the original Ace of Diamond was Sawamura and Furuya's first year, this Act II seems to be their second year. But the Act II manga's still ongoing so I guess unless it's really close to wrapping up their second year we won't see any real passing of the torch from the graduating third-years anytime soon.
I'm assuming the insert song/animation in the middle of the episode was the new OP. I guess they're closing off the episode with the old one then. Kind of a weird thing but I guess it's fairly irrelevant.
After the kind of heavy way he died in the fight with not-Licht it is a kinda cheap-out that Yulius survives. That's some real Shounen Jump shit.

Hm, I think they're still somewhat normal for grizzly ojii-sans like Yami. There is no way you'd see them being smoked by teenagers these days though. Like even back when they were animating JoJo's part three, there's a single scene in it where the fourteen or fifteen-year-old MC gets his hand on a cigarette and starts smoking it. And the anime just puts this doofy big black censor circle over his mouth.

Yeah that's fair. Something more like a pipe or a larger cigar-like smoke would fit the world aesthetic of Black Clover. Yami kind sticks out like a sore thumb anyway so it's just one more weird aspect to a weird guy.

It's kind of akin to the way the supernatural creatures in Hanako-kun work. In fact I think this notion of "urban myths shaping supernatural creatures" get utilized a lot in Japanese fiction.
