Basketball's been a professional sport for a pretty long time, I kinda always forget that. When a sport's been around that long there eventually emerges strategies and nuances that you probably don't pick up unless you're a player.

it's a pretty rudimentary trick but it's really effective in practice simple distractions like that are really big openings for a thief to pickpocket or for a street magician to do something sly and unnoticed
that kinda stuff was why i wasn't sure if this show was trying to be supernatural or about some doofy kind of mentalism

Yeah coming in like you did in the third episode left you unaware of the supernatural side of things. The silly mentalist things came after we'd seen some of the weird shit that happens in the first episode so it was pretty clear they use the techniques to apply their empath powers.
