I've totally forgotten the specifics of why Touma lost his memory too.
I remember it was something to save Index though, but that's it.

Didn't we meet him after he lost it?
I don't remember much about it except that they kinda mentioned it a few times but brushed aside the importance of it.
And Touma didn't really seem to care much about it.

He loses it in the first episode of the first season, if I remember correctly.
Meets Index, gets familiar with her situation, fights Styl and the sword lady, arranges the situation that has him lose his memory, and then the end of the first episode is him in the hospital after losing the memory.

i imagine it's probably pretty hard to care about your lost memories if you don't remember what you lost
