How does the mask work?
Like they weren't trying to eat the snow girl even though she looks completely human.

Maybe youkai have a sixth sense for "smelling" other youkai or something.
And the mask effectively makes you "smell" in that same sense as a youkai.

It would need to be some kind of magic.

There probably isn't really a need for an explicit reason though.
Youkai being able to smell a human and humans needing something to mask themselves for that is pretty common in Japanese folklore.
So for a Japanese person seeing that it's probably perfectly reasonable to them.

Yeah it's two-cour.
Beatless is a single novel, so they're probably adapting it in full over the two seasons.

Well, the fact that it's a full story is nice.
