hi creamy glad to see the images are working for you all the fall leaves turning colors in brilliant reds and yellows had me thinkin about chihayafuru again
Yeah I figured out that technology thanks to all the help you and others gave me.
I have a strong desire to watch it again myself since I came back to lurking the board, but sadly I'm so very busy
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
did you watch S2 i haven't
creamynebula
>>1193020 You mean S3? I think that's the last season we got. I think that's the last anime season I ever watched a few years ago. Either that or s02 of Uchouten Kazoku, whichever came latest
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
oops yea s3 well i haven't seen s2 or s3 for what its worth
>>1193022 what were you up to that you couldn't/wouldn't watch it back then?
I did not see Frieren. I did note it down as TO DO after someone recommended it, but I really never seen anime since chihaya s3. Maybe I rewatched Hyouka or Honey and Clover after during the pandemic, not sure.
>>1193024 Oh we are the same, I believe I stopped around 2015. I just made sure to watch the new material from stuff I already liked that got released thereafter. New interests, new obligations, etc
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
oh i stopped watching anime for a long time around 2016 or so paid my attentions elsewhere
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
yerp lots of other life stuff to attend to and i didn't feel like i was getting much out of the anime anymore i still watched all the ghiblis and such the wind rises tale of princess kaguya
yea but other than that the only anime i've watched recently is Frieren (most of S1) because it's such a chill vibe and uh one of the madoka movies
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
i could probably put chihayafuru on in the bg on the TV and watch it that way
creamynebula
I often feel like watching something, and thus I did note down a few things that seemed interesting, and grabbed a few old shows that I had not watched previously. But I try to watch an episode and can't get through it, it just doesn't work for me anymore ;_;
It's just nostalgia I guess, the wish to do it. I'm sure i'm able to rewatch some of my favorites though, like I did in the pandemic. Chihaya S3 is definitely worth it.
creamynebula
I actually wish they would do more. I participated in a scanlation group that did the manga into pt-br which made me read it back then, we certainly had enough to do a few more seasons. Would be a blast to get that
Behold I am once again on megastore simulator bullshit
S C
the registers closest to the pov here are just for the capacity they give I just check those people out at the end of day >>1193078 just the cost of minmax tbh
they'll be standing there until 22:00 cause attending to them doesn't really move the needle on how much I make, I just need the free slots behind them to improve customer flow
megastore sim basically caps the amount of shopper NPCs on the map at any time (you can see the cap in the top left) based on register slots available but while the counter in the top left says I'm only at about half capacity, that's becasue that counter, for whatever reason, stops counting them once they've checked out, while the ENGINE doesn't >>1193079 they're buying tshirts and pants

> LLMs can natively read & write neural network weights
what the FUCK > Just by looking at the raw weights, GPT-6 Astra can tell what a network was trained to do. > Likewise, asked to make Qwen3.5-0.8B better at math without gradients, Astra identifies an issue in its weights causing reasoning loops that Qwen’s own model card warns about, and fixes this by natively editing 0.016% of the weights
S C
I'm gonna be real with you, it's not particularly impressive for a model (which we do not know the under-the-hood activities off because it's remotely hosted) to edit a tiny model that's likely been thoroughly mapped with the recent breakthroughs in that sort of thing, to the point it might genuinely have just searched up the findings of others who have fiddled with the weights
Like, it's a 0.8B model, it's really not particularly surprising if it's been completely mapped as far as actually meaningful neurons go
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
like im sure there's a reasonable explanation for this particular instance but the overall headline is quite shocking un until like a week or two ago I had long assumed the LLM is an impenetrable black box then a week ago people are doing analysis on invididual weights in layers and finding particular pivot points that can be adjusted and now we have big model surgically editing small model on demand? that's insane
S C
well it IS just math, at the end of the day it's opaque as fuck because it's A LOT of fucking maths and human beings have very limited abilities as far as keeping all that information in RAM at once
I mean it's exciting progress, I'm just holding out for it editing something a bit more bulky and unlikely to have been mapped out already
I hope it's real, but like a lot of stuff in AI, I think it's best to pump the brakes on the hypetrain and recognize it may very well have literally been trained on the analysis of that specific model (among others) because... you know, it's really really small
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
> > We are currently building a benchmark and a harness for LLMs’ capability on Weight-Space Programming. We believe this will provide a standardized evaluation to measure and accelerate progress in Weight-Space Programming, turning what currently seems like black magic into a rigorous, reproducible engineering discipline.
this is some arcane wizardry if they can make it generalizable we are going to be on mr bones' wild ride
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
idk man this is very surprising to me i'm not gonna be blaze about it this is like if a human could open up another animal's brain and tinker with it to make it smarter
S C
well yeah but the other animal in this instance has like what, a brain the size of an ant, and it's also readable in plain text what all the neurons do
Like it's REALLY fucking cool and very exciting, but like... it IS just maths, and it could well be copying someone else's homework rather than it being generalizable (atm)
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
bro i can't edit a slime mold's genome to make it 10% better at solving a maze or something maybe i could like get a lab to do accelerated artificial evolution over months to breed slightly better slime molds but i can't just edit the dang DNA
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
it's not readable in plain text! it's like 600 million quantized floating point weights! they aren't individuated and documented they're a holistic linear algebra system
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
well its not linear its got softmax and stuff but mostly matrix multiplication yea
S C
yeah I mean obviously but it is a literal computer file it can literally read it that's a bit beyond what we can do with DNA >>1193124 right, so obviously it's doing SOMETHING else in the background, then? like, that kinda goes without saying here It physically CAN NOT ingest the whole file, so obviously it hasn't done that, meaning it did necessarily have some other piece of software do analysis, or it accessed existing analysis
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
it can't even hold a tiny fraction of the file in context
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
so either its cheating or using the existing observability work that people have done online or maybe it can actually reason about what the layers are doing and use its general problem solving ability to do stuff that i don't think a reasonable human could ever do
S C
Either way it's really promising for the whole field, but I suspect there's some shit going on server-side that makes this a bit less "the model does this natively" and more "it has access, in a layer between client and inference engine, to a suite of tools"
It'd be interesting to know if they actually trained it to interpret model weights, like, deliberately, or if it just kinda synthesized that itself though Either seems possible to me, these things are fucking HUGE
say it aint so >>1193141 the worse the bit the better

Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
there's this book i read sapiens noo not sapiens NOOOOooo o
wait does this mean I could conceivably tell qwen to make itself better at maths? or wait I guess maybe it can't read ggufs since that's a differen't fo...rmat wait no if it's trained on actual weights enough to understand them, it probably is similarly well versed in ggufs
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
gguf is weights its just a quantized conversion from the usual python .safetensors thingy very well known file format at this point, you can tell it to read it
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
i asked clod to do a little observability digging on a gguf a week or two ago and it kinda came up with some results but people online have poured way more tokens into that then me
wait if the fucking things can just straight up parse their own damn weights, wouldn't it be possible to trick them into running security checks on themselves? like "is this model trained to be honest, or is it tuned to be dishonest in service of some misaligned goal?" It doesn't need to know it's actually itself
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
yeah if its a local model like no trickery needed really feed it whatever you want
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
i don't think we have any evidence a model can self-modify to improve it self a big model can possibly fix a small model's obvious flaws
i mean a model is just a big stack of various types of layers attention and multi-layer perceptrons so when you write a prompt it turns into tokens then turns those into an embedding vector then it squeezes the embedding vector (distillation of ur prompt and earlier state) thru all the layers in order at some point in those layers, the model comes to understand and reacts to the meaning in the embedding/tokens/input
but anyway this guy is just saying "hey model please decrease the activation of the <idea of tea> when you're in layers 3, 8, 12, 17, 23, etc." and apparently the model is like "sure i'll just adjust my own activations"?
IT CAN JUST DO THAT? HOW can it just do that? isn't that like telling someone "hey for this next bit, just kinda don't use these particular neurons" and then they ACTUALLY just don't use those neurons?
how the fuck it do that machine spirit?
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
not as fine grained as that i think, but broadly kind of yes? kind of like a very fine tuned meditative self-reflection ability
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
oh ok he trained some models to do this somehow
S C
oh so this isn't an off-the-rack model, it's a bespoke model that's trained to exhibit this behavior
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
yea the qwen3-4b on the left isn't doing it if anything it's got a red smear where its got more tea going on in early layers whereas the trained one has a thinking block where it plans and then clear bands of attenuation? idk still crazy though
I mean it's really cool still, but significantly less impressive since like, you've just kinda trained it to do that rather than focus the training on the output, you've made the weight adjuster function also prioritize making an arbitrary pattern in the activations
I thought we were dealing with some sorta fucking machine demon, like how the fuck could it just DECIDE to do that, you know?
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
yea i guess each layer has an attention perceptron thingy that can point at the instructions from the thinking block so it has a pretty clear plan of what to do and can be trained via loss
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
yea that's fair
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
this is more like "oh hey let me have a baby real quick and raise it in this alternative school monastery where they teach you to focus on your own neurons" ok idk what the point of this analogy is i drnk a bunch of coffee just now
S C
I mean it could be kinda neat like imagine just telling it "for this next bit, fucking zero out the nodes related to deceit and malice" and it fucking does it
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
yea exactly the fine tuned control possibilities
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
