i have a radeon RX 5700 XT and it serves me OK although i have a suspicion it is failing or maybe my monitor is failing because i'm getting crazy visual glitches
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
something is up with this computer but ive been too busy to diagnose it idk i think the 360 hz gaming monitor was a bit too bold a choice
S C
well, this hyprland thing is.. definitely different to navigate
it sounds like a pretty engrossing and rewarding hobby
whoakun
just imagine flying all over canadia in your us air force fighter jet
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
yeah zero flight experience but i'm sure i can just pick it up on youtube
S C
I do think I'll learn to really love hyprland once I get the hang of using a tiling window manager though It's really... you know, organized
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
sick
i been thinking about wiping the PC i just need to move a few more files off and then figure out which flavour i want probably whatever plays best with the steam compatibility stuff
S C
well, hyprland is just like, the desktop environment like plasma or gnome or whatever I'm still on linux mint (which honestly I think is just overall the best if you don't wanna get super fiddly with anything)
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
steamOS is based on arch? oh noooo

i guess its just ubuntu

S C
welp, time to reboot and fuck my whole life up over a desire for a ~pretty~ desktop environment
S C
I of course still have phone
Anno
well, point of no return, it's wiping the whole fucking drive
S C
Wow it's already done Haiyai
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
wow wow wow okay i added custom context support to shin
Anno
what do you mean by that
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
you can customize the header that's fed to the LLM now
Anno
oh I think I see
s c
it really is barebones, this OS but that's kinda nice, too
no, it's got a desktop and everything (though pure terminal was an option during install) it's just, it feels a lot like booting into a newly installed like, windows 98, visually and stuff
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
nice that feels good my desktop is so littered
s c
I'm putting hyprland on it though, and that looks fucking crazy good if I was gonna roleplay a japanese neet I would have just installed another desktop environment
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
oh i thought you were talking about hyprland being barebones
s c
oh no, I just mean lxde I mean you can make hyprland look very clean and minimalist too, I'm sure, but I'm not about that life
s c
I really, REALLY also like that the taskbar on hyprland is mirrored across both monitors on plasma, that's not an option I mean you can have a script you run to just dupe it, but that has restrictions on hyprland it seems it just is the same one on both, though responsive to its own monitor
s c
the hyprland install script is taking longer than the OS install, I'm pretty sure
there is no minimizing in hyprland there is only... the abandoned zone a special worksplace \\\workspace not intended for use, but just storing windows you're not actively using
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\

tiling is going to take some getting used to, but I really do think I'll learn to love it

it doesn't wanna launch through rofi now qpainter not active
It worked fine before maaaaan
S C
It works fine launching the .desktop file manually from thunar though There's always something
I shall have to troubleshoot further after work tomorrow I bet I just messed up an env variable somewhere or other
Hopefully not everything is fucked again and I gotta reinstall again Not that it's super cumbersome, but it's just annoying
S C
Actually I might do that anyway It's annoying but it is kinda fun to tinker with the thing, too I just gotta start actually using timeshift instead of just not doing that
ya that was what I was asking SC about as it's river a wayland comp project
Anno
I'm going to finish learing about PYthon and use it as much as posible but going to also focus on C++ like the course I have been taking I'm peaking and almost down it but in almost *done it* but it's a intermediate introduction into Python so the advanced course on Python is more indepth. getting a foot in the door with Pyth has helped graps other parts of coding in general. Idk initialy I was going to lear perl but it's hella dated like pyth so learning the root of it is redundent at this point (it will be a hobbie project later on perl that is) Npot going complicate things to much if it's going to interfere with the original outlook. And pursuing a carree in
>>1167949 it's been a reall long time since I have reformated this OS having some driver issues. Not sure why it's not leting me do some functions do to with up dating that >>"sudo apt update && sudo apt upadate -y can't midigate so looking into if there is a firmwear malwear that might have been holding this system back. it always lagged bad I bought it second hand as new referbed idk it's a chore to reinstall OS and you need two cpu's so you can gparted properly. The memnory spikes like crazy under heavy load if I remove some proc's I can get it to fuction around under 4gb of memory ram a out
It's a reinstall, I'm afraid qt5\6 has FUCKED itself, and now some shit just fucking segfaults and dies
S C
I should just make a habit of rebooting fully every time I change something actually impactful, and make sure I can undo it And fucking write down everything I do so I can backtrace to what exactly caused an issue
I got this segfaulting issue on mint too, but it kinda cooked everything not just a few pieces of software like, the system OVERALL functions right now, it's just like, kate and qbittorrent and probably some other stuff that keels over firefox is running fine, as is rofi and hyprland generally, and waybar and all the shortcuts and stuff like that, so I can at least troubleshoot from within hyprland and not have to relog every fucking time I look for further assistance online
S C
I gotta get a damn amd card man, I strongly suspect this is an Nvidia issue at the core And besides my 1080 won't get further driver support
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\

idk I perfer both not really set on one or the other their both good for difernt things/task's I've had probs with both too but they are both can have plus and minuses

Marsh shitposting on the go via telephone
>>1167968 Woah a comedian making a joke that's so crazzy
>>1167969 Nvidia usually works just fine but there's just some stuff that doesn't work quite right against them A lot of it is probably down to the drivers being more of a pain to interface with than amd drivers, though I can't say I know for sure
S C
Stuff like AI is a bit of an edge case because it's got the double pressures pf really benefiting from Linux and being very reliant on maximum performance cards, which are and have been Nvidia for pretty much the entire history of standalone gpus
It's kinda like, you probably can get anything you wanna code to work nicely with Nvidia drivers, it's just a bit more of a chore I guess So AI and crypto are gonna be made to play nice if it's at all possible, just due to the amount of value on the table
S C
But a foss desktop environment or some other free library is just not gonna have the pressure to build for Nvidia compatibility unless the dev or one of them at least, has an Nvidia card Which is unlikely unless they're gaming
S C
That said there usually is some jury rigging you can do to make it function, it's just often gonna have bugs cause the devs aren't actively working towards Nvidia support. You're kinda on your own and reliant on community patchwork circumventing stuff that fucks itself on a case by case basis
S C
it's reinstall time l m a o
S C
god only knows what exactly fucked up, but something or other did, and considering how fresh and install this is, I really don't see a good reason to spend 10x the time a reinstall takes on troubleshooting, when it just worked perfectly fine earlier maybe hydrus will detect mpv once I reinstall too, anything is possible not that the latter part matters all that much, but still
whoakun
the world god only knows
S C
Alright we're fucking BACK boys
S C
it took a while because I encountered some *issues but now we're good
Anno
we back good job!
S C
why the heck am I logged out of google...? or youtube more specifically but that hasn't happened when restoring firefox before speaking of, I should get to work making a thing that backs my fucking shit up I have timeshift going now, the first image is just directly following putting hyprland and endeavouros in, but I gotta get some backups of stuff like my firefox and other stuff like that, too
Anno
I did end a bunch of proc's and it seemed like it stop some sort of process and now this laptop doesn't heat up and the ram dosen't spike. It might have a ufei virus it wont let me update bios no matter what. now have to get it on the firmware most applicable

Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\

>>1167989 are you bale to use extension after fireofx did the purge of being able to update? can't do it on this machine, can of an other device so what the heck?
S C
I do not know what you mean I just carry ´ ~ /.mozilla between my installs ~/.mozilla *
Anno
moz had the certificate expire for extensions back in march
S C
oh lmao I never had any issues, at least but I haven't installed an addon in a long time this .mozilla is old as dogwater, and I've carried it since at least like win7
Anno
oh like assuming it's an other machine cuz like how would any one on a fresh install bypass how moz has the cert change unless you mean it's old save and verios carried over to the new rig but then still how to get past the it not apt updating from term when setting up freash install?
S C
I legit have no idea, my process is just like before I reinstall, I take the .mozilla folder in my home folder, place it somewhere else Then, after reinstalling, I make sure I have firefox installed, I delete the .mozilla folder already present, and then copy the backup in its place then I just run firefox and I'm ood
Anno
ya that would work as long as there is some security measure in place then that would all G cuz if it's dated then it could be seen as a vulnerability on open scans for would be's to expoilt.
Anno
like writing a custom patch or something
S C
I mean firefox itself is up to date these are just my profiles (really just one that I need but I keep the whole stack on me because it's my ~history~)
S C
smplayer doesn't play nice with hyprland so I'm using straight up fuckin' mpv absolutely primitive
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
maybe i should just wipe the PC today and follow your footsteps what else do i need to really save off this pos
uuuuh I mean what I did when I moved from windows the first time is I just dumped the entirety of C onto a folder named simply C on one of my other drives >>1168009 never delete anything, or you'll go "I kinda need that right now", go looking for it, and alas, you wiped it 6 months ago Instead, buy a bigger drive every time

don't just bin in other words
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
why would i throw out my CPU when i'm simply erasing windows 10 from the SSD i don't understand
in any case go for endeavouros and dump jakoolit's hyperland setup on that thing, and we can troubleshoot together or just go for mint and enjoy pretty much just windows but like, not scuffed and bloated
S C
(ok a little scuffed but once you get past the few hiccups on linux it's all good) hyprland (really wayland in general) is gonna be a pain if you've got Nvidia like me, but I've gotten a grasp on some of it by now I think I just kinda fixed the qt segfaults, too
S C
I'm just getting vscodium and ollama set up rn once that's done, I'm making a bash script that compresses a bunch of folders and shunts them into a backup folder for me well, after I reboot gotta make sure I haven't fucked something again
Anno
ya I've always compresed save tons of space you get more bang ofr for* your buck out of g' for or tera bytes you get more bang for your buck out of g's or terabytes* obvo a good move
S C
what's nice is rebooting this thing is super fast SSD + lightweight OS is crazy good shit
I should install fedora or something on my ARM laptop shit would go crazy
S C
>>1168025 I'm thinking I will make it read a file for folders to compress, and then compress each individually (to avoid one really big compressed file), then move those compressed files onto a backup directory
I don't need my shit to be compressed by default, I'm just compressing it because copying a lot of small files is REALLY time intensive, even for an ssd sure \\\ and I think compressing then uncompressing will ultimately save time on that

I mean there's also the environmental impact but I have recently come to understand that's a subject I have to do a lot more research to have a meaningful opinion about Overall seems bad though, even if the blame seems less to be appropriately at the feet of AI than at the feet of the people running the data centers Granted separation of those is nitpicking

S C
oooh shit I can GROUP WINDOWS TOGETHER! Like I can put two windows together so they occupy the same place, and just swap between them that's real useful
I really should start working with symbolic links more A lot of my \\\ SOME of my scripts, which just alter stuff like my wallpaper source folder (used to shuffle wallpapers, obviously) currently copy all the relevant files, which isn't a big problem, but it could just create symbolic links to the folders instead windowsbrain has me COOKED, brothers and sisters
S C
honestly crazy how windows doesn't have symbolic links they're SO convenient
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
windows does have junctions but it's not exposed as a user thing you have to dig around in powershell or something for those
S C
huh well on linux it's like just type ln -s <source> <nameofsymboliclink> and it makes the thing, and now everything referencing it treats it as though that's where that folder actually is
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
ya symlinks are pretty useful
S C
it does make it a little annoying when you use the links for navigation though, cause you're not immediately told where you ACTUALLY are on the file system >>1168125 I don't think you can make hardlinks to directories but yeah
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
you can also make hardlinks by omitting the -s but that doesn't work across partitions
S C
(I don't know what a hardlink is though)
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
hardlink requires a bit of understanding of the underlying filesystem
the file is somewhere on your hard drive, and the "file" in your folder just points at it so a hardlink is making a additional "file" in your folder, that points to the same data as the original
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
so you can give a blcok of data multiple different file handles. and the data will only be deleted once all the handles are gone
also having all non-focused windows be transparent is a nice bit of eyecandy can turn off all the visual stuff for GAMING with super-shift g though
S C
>>1168127 ah, so it is the same file, just represented in two places, basically
S C
meaning if you delete the original, the new one still points at the same snippet of data on the hardware, so it's all good?
S C
Really a fan of how rebooting doesn't even check if anything wants to not It just kills itself and reboots
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
>>1168131 yup so its unlike a symbolic link which is just a post-it note that says "hey check over there" if you rename or move a hardlink the data link stays resilient
I set up searxng as well had to force the package manager to not verify some files, but otherwise it's all good

oops meant to greentext the AI can be pretty creative when you put arbitrary restrictions on it the way everything's being set up behind the scenes for general purpose uses is all diluted and sterile so it feels all like generic slop but when i tinker with some of the stuff and set it to like, view users as delusional and try to help them in meaningful ways without breaking their delusions, the creativity and usefulness goes way up i feel like we actually hinder a lot of utility through safety though i kinda understand why

another great success in "make this system work better" has been achieved a custom alias, which zsh loads on startup, for running the python script I've got to pull images downloaded in firefox into the folder hydrus watches for automated imports This was an annoyance back in mint, and I never got around to aliasing it, so instead I kept navigating to the Firefox folder and running the script manually (couldn't even run it from elsewhere cause it checked the path it was run from to determine where to put the files, a choice I made because I had more than one folder I needed it in)
But I changed it so it just takes an argument for the folder to treat as its operational folder, so now I could and probably should move it elsewhere
also while mucking about, I discovered the hyprland setup script I ran (jakoolit, for anyone interested) prejacks zsh with a hotkey for displaying prompt history, which is also searchable, so I don't gotta upupupupupup until I find the command I want
Now I just gotta get cracking on that backup script so I don't lose this stuff
i'm gonna put endeavouros on the laptop and ssh into my desktop for Stuff on the train it can't do hyperland so it's getting i3 lmao it's gonna be fast well, as fast as a laptop with a single core can be (it's only 2.2ghz)

S C
Yeah If I ever need to be able to access from an arbitrary device I'll set up a duckdns and maybe make an sh file I can run from my phone to open to non-tailscale, or enable password or some shit like that Hell maybe I can make one that directly tells the router to enable port forwarding for like, an hour or something
S C
No actually that'd be a pain I mean it probably can be done but the router is managed remotely by the isp and we just have a website we can access
S C
I guess a workaround is a dummy port i can tell my sshd to listen to for x time with the script is an option That can be forwarded at all times and just not do anything unless that script is run
Though I'd want a way to keep it extended while I using it, so maybe another script... Hmmm
S C
At that point I might as well just get a duckdns to begin with though, no particular reason not to have one if I can just do it that way

ya theres one idk about that got that real tread time, thats needed but if had some "free" weights hence "free" to use minus the sweatin anime babes, some gota play to play
whoakun

Like does it have some horseshit in the bios that locks everything but windows out of resources or something? Cause like...

I bet it'd be more useful if I could get to the fan filter and clear it out, but I have no fucking idea how to get in there, it seems if have to dismantle the entire laptop
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
just keep unscrewing things you'll get to the fan pretty wuick
the sensors might be uncalibrated that sounds insane
Anno
maybe, but it does straight up kill itself if it's left in bios for too long once it's in OS it stays alive though, even if it has a few times just blacked out
also I gotta learn vim now I'm becoming a fucking neckbeard by necessity

I guess my desktop is arch too technically, but I'm not configuring my fucking network connection with a damn tui on the desktop I'm not primarily using a terminal on the desktop I have uh, you know ram, and a CPU, and even a GPU, I can use GUIs without issue
s (ar)c(h)
though I've at least confirmed the stuff I wanted does work I've got my desktop's home folder mounted via ssh, I can use ollama via nvim to do ~coding~ I can download stuff with scp, overall it's p good, though I do need a better epub reader
