I think thats a step in the right direction, but things are so jaded all the time it's hard to be

it seems that most players run the same gambit so it's best if they run that gambit that is one you run most games
it's best to play out another gambit that has a more likleyhood too not be the same as one that you would normal run.

At the level you are at you know by experiance what moves end up and how in 3 moves later by what moves
are going to be effective or not result in blunders.

i play the same openings almost every game but everyone's got a different response
i don't generally find that i can predict which path the player will take, unless i play a really dumb gambit that has obvious good responses
i have one of those and sometimes it gets the main path but not alwaysy

Ya thats what I kind of thought and, do the same for the most part.
But I suppose lately have been very predictable. I have been getting more queen checks but losing out on time over thinking.
Must think faster without resorting to be impulsive.

you train an extra neural net (the encoder/decoder) that pulls sparse activations out of the LLM layers

ummmmm
you know how LLMs take text input and generate more text via its inscrutable layers of simulated neurons
you get the text tokens out but programmatically you don't really know why it picked those tokens

(this makes it hard to run an LLM autonomously because its hard to know when to end or if the output was actually bad/harmful/tangential/etc)

so the idea in "sparse activations" is you get some insight into which concepts the LLM is currently thinking about given its current state

for example a really simplified and incorrect metaphor would be if my brain had a Jennifer Anniston neuron
whenever i see a picture of her, that neuron fires
or think about her

so the activations are an attempt to decode the black box neural layer activity into say 64k separate bits where a 0 is "not active" and a 1 is "active"

by feeding text about specific topics into the LLM maybe you could isolate specific concepts in the sparse activation tensor (the 64k yes/nos) and then use that to read the mind of the LLM as it writes output

Though I dunno whetehr that's entirely the case or not, it's just what I've seen people say. I know it's the case for fediverse, but for whatever reason that hasn't taken off like bluesky, likely because bluesky is just a lot more familiar in appearance

text gets turned into tokens first, of which there are usually like 32,000 different ones in the vocab for the model
each token gets converted to an embedding which is a list of weights of a fixed width
sort of like the idea of the token expressed in a vector space
then you pump the embedding thru the transformers
so it's all fixed width at this point and you can pump as many embeddings as you want

and pump it thru the many transforming layers of the LLM
which alters the state of the LLM

so you pump tokens in, LLM state changes , pump tokens out at the other end

but asking it to do long division on two 10 digit numbers is just silly
it doesn't have the hardware for that, so it has to fudge and figure in some other way

The story's ok but the way you actually get to the end is kinda annoying and kinda doesn't fit the rest of the gameplay loop so it feels wrong and tedious

the crafting isn't very grindy, it's mostly just a "go on an excursion to here and get the things then come back" once you get past the initial grind for base components early game
but that's to get you familiar with the game overall, and really not a big deal

the end game tedium is really because it's NOT crafting

though I'm being vague to avoid spoling it much
