I dunno if it's the height, but it's certainly a very distinct and now rare genre I would be surprised to see AI art actually do that like, creatively, too it's not a very generalizable Type of thing There are some that share a lot of elements, like the aux port in the back of the neck they have in the matrix, that one is fairly common and it's easy to see an AI doing a decent job at it But a lot of the other stuff is really diverse and don't share a Look so much as a vibe
I don't really know what's meant by humans being precluded though Humans made those things in the first place You can't just take a product of human creativity and go "neither human nor machine could do this" Human did it. It's there at all because a human did it.
Anno
It's not an entirely accurate use of the word, but in the context here, that's why it's the height of human art Through insanity, creativity, genius, whatever you want to attribute it to, a small selection of human beings achieved this peak of art No one before them or after them are going to have the appropriate time and place and skill and opportunity to recreate it
S C
That read is agreeable, yeah Not so much "the height" as in "best" or something, but more like, the peak in terms of technical accomplishment, in a sense That does kinda go for a LOT of anime from back around the 80s though, not just the cyberpunk type stuff, cause OVA production was, possibly still is but seemingly not undisturbed, a very different process than the now more dominant TV anime I know about this primarily due to the "what the fuck happened" memes from /a/ The artwork was a lot more detailed back when they just kinda worked on a 6 episode OVA like, until it was done, rather than "we gotta crank out 12 episodes by this date, cause that's when the last episode airs" I know anime isn't exactly made week by week, but I imagine the final episode is generally pressed up against the airing date as far as they can get it
Anno
Anime deadlines aren't really a monolith in this day and age There will still be deadlines, obviously, but a lot of studios seem to be able to get a lot of the work done before the show even airs these days I'm pretty sure most of the first cour of Dungeon Meshi was animated by TRIGGER before the show even started airing I think KyoAni's stuff is done before the show airs too
You can't escape deadlines, but I think a smaller per capita number of shows nowadays are being animated right up to the point where the episode airs Expcetions would be MAPPA and Jujutsu Kaisen which was overworking their animators so hard and still couldn't put out their idealized version of certain major fight scenes until after the episode had aired
S C
I mean obviously the LONG running shows, like fucking Naruto, that's a weekly basis thing, it kinda has to be, it's way too long to make in advance, hell the manga was written and published in parallel, hence fillers But yeah, probably most seasonal 1-2 cours are made in advance, at least majority I still would imagine the schedules are tight enough to end up with doing some of the animation as the show is airing, though Not like, from episode 3, but maybe the last 3 episodes start final animation during the airing, that sorta thing Cause they only have so much time from getting the timeslot to when the final slot comes to pass And for that matter it's not like they have anything for the animators to do between the last episode and the next timeslot being secured
Anno
I think Shuumatsu Train Doko e Iku airing this season is being animated a bit close to the episode though I recall seeing a tweet saying, around shortly before the third episode, that they'd only finished up to the third episode Or something along those lines
S C
from what I hear about the quality, I'd bet demon slayer is "animated" entirely in advance, they probably have the next season done already
S C
in unrelated topics s2e2 of smiling friends was surprisingly kinda dull it's all gas otherwise, but that one was pretty boring hopefully they haven't kinda lost the drive, and just made one stinker, as one is bound to do now and then
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
>>1121087 they made a few replies to their post which clarified a bit saying that yea its possible to do the intricate mecha anime of the 90s but a lot of that talent is retired and the job market for animators is different so it would be hard to economically actually produce that style of TV anime
Anno
I agree with the premise These days I think outside of the utmost passion project, with how commercialized anime is, there just isn't economic situation where a serialized anime could manage something like that A movie might be able to, but the attention to detail to achieve what was done back in the 80s/90s would clock in so much animator effort, assuming you could find animators who are that trained in both mechanical design and human anatomical detail The other thing is, anime has become so much of an artform unto itself that a lot of people who work as animators aren't training in classical art techniques and realism And as far as mechanical design goes, there's more profitable fields to put that skill towards than crunching out an anime production, movie or television It's not fundamentally impossible, but the variables which made it possible in the 80s/90s are far, far harder to acquire these days than back then
S C
the closest we got was SEVEN! YEARS!
S C
but also that's a movie, not a series, and well... took 7 fucking years but god DAMN it looks good
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
redliiiiine
yea that makes sense people got different priorities these days with the sped up pace of life and myriad distractions who wants to study mechanical technical drawing for decades when you can join a startup or crank stuff out with AI
Anno
That's not really what I'm saying People who study mechanical design aren't going to put it towards animating for brutal hours at a low wage, when it's a skill which can be put towards all sorts of industries which probably have much more agreeable hours and better salaries Anime is known to be an industry which is sustained at the moment, probably unsustainably so, on the passion of the people who work in it And I think the Venn diagram of people who are highly skilled in mechanical design and have that degree of passion for anime is almost two entirely separate circles
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
i hear you i hear you
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
i do disagree w the tweet wrt AI i think the myriad different approaches will get us to image generation that is both bottom-up muscle memory trained, and also driven by conceptual intentional goals
it is really kinda wild how bugs have like, a max size not due to weight or anything primarily, but because of oxygen logistics exoskeletons are fucking cracked, but they fucked up their air game so now they're stuck as a tiny little piece of shit species that \\\ not species, kingdom? that still makes up like, the majority of the planet's biomass, I think?
reminds me a bit how good our brain is at adaption in general even like, super quickly dutchfriend and I used to, for the hell of it, start a private 1v1 dm game in tf2, but gradually crank up the game speed, like 10% at a time, until we actually couldn't keep up, and when we hopped back into a public server we felt like GODS cause we'd acclimated to only fighting and dodging and jumping at like 2.5x It genuinely was like goddamn bullettime I dunno to what extent we actually performed better though, impossible to tell with public servers in TF2 cause we're already pretty good in the first place, and public servers are filled with, you know, people who don't take the game so seriously
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
yea playing with game speed is fun i cant remember what we used to mess w that in probably smash bros
I mean in fairness I'm pretty sure 35% oxygen would fucking delete humanity I don't think we can actually function in that much oxygen short term sure, but over time I think it fucks shit up
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
> The current partial pressure of oxygen in the atmosphere is 0.21 bar. Oxygen toxicity effects start to occur above 0.3 bar. So for an atmosphere that is 35% oxygen (by number) you'd need a total pressure of less than 0.86 bar to avoid toxicity effects yup also apparently everything would be on fire all the time would have to be a humid place to counter that
S C
how far under the sea is 1 bar? like a kilometer?
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
isnt 1 bar sea level? idk
S C
oh, maybe? I don't fucking know, I'm not sure I understand the quote honestly
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
ya 1 bar is normal air pressure hence. the reduction to .86
S C
so we'd need a drop of like nearly 15% pressure just to survive which I guess would mean... less other stuff a lot less other stuff like nitrogen and the like

having actually taken some time to figure out how to best use my units rather than F1 F3ing my way through bannerlord, I have a newfound love for the game I'm mfing Sun Tzu up in this bitch
S C
Though, it's hard to tell how much of my success is tactical prowess, and how much is just my units being real powerful because I've got my econ game on the ball and can afford to just upgrade absolutely everyone who gets the EXP to At least the raw number of bodies on each side tends to be about the same and I lose far fewer than I kill handling cavalry is still pretty difficult though, they're not as easy to order about as infantry and archers Archers you set and forget, on a hill ideally Infantry you either use to protect the archers in a shield wall, or you start pushing them up against the other guy's line that much is easy, and I've gotten fairly good at judging when I should do either Or sometimes both, which is why it's very beneficial to have two formations of infantry
But cavalry you kinda have to move ACROSS the enemy for them to be effective You can't slowly push them up against the other guy's line, that doesn't do nothin' So I tend to just leave cavalry on anti-cavalry duty, let them manage themselves while I handle the footmen
S C
in warband it was actually a lot easier to use cavalry, because you ordered your troops view a top-down view of the battlefield, so you could very easily have them move to the exact opposite side of whatever you wanted them to put a dent in, but in bannerlord you order from your character's POV so it's a lot harder to do that kind of thing
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
what game?
S C
Bannerlord Mount&Blade Bannerlord, to be technical, but it's not like there are more bannerlords I've got a fair amount of mods, two that change the game a fair bit, but nothing like SUPER huge RBM makes the combat a bit more grounded in reality, slows the game down a lot in combat really, and another mod makes it so I can marry my companions if I want, and also hire random townsfolk as trash-tier companions I can build up My husband in this campaign is such a trash tier companion, and he's my archery division's captain, has been since the start. He's getting fairly good with a bow by now We have 4 kids he's like 25 years old
Mahou Shoujo Marsh-chan
damn dude we got a fuckin HATER.
S C
I guess it's actually called mount&blade 2: bannerlord, but the 2 is kinda misleading seeing as there's actually 3 M&Bs before bannerlord There's M&B just, on its own, then there's warband, which is basically mount&blade+ and then there's fire and sword, but uh, honestly fire and sword is real stinky and I don't like it
Anno
WOW THE GRAPHICS ARE INTENSE I guess the forts dont really account for all that much gb's so the landscape look detailed and vast
S C
fire and sword is in some ways just warband with guns modded in but the gun mechanics aren't fun to work with, so I never got too into it
S C
>>1121188 wait are you talking about bannerlord? I mean the graphics are OK I guess, but I wouldn't say they're amazing It's pretty damn good for what the game is though, there's a LOT of different battlefields, and they're all corresponding to their own parts of the overmap, not randomly rolled
Anno
>>1121190 I wasn't expecting the game play to be like this thought it was agame like dorffort it was a suprise
S C
Oh, I see M&B is pretty unique for how the gameplay is And bannerlord has a lot more stuff than warband did, unmodded anyway There's smithing (actually brokenly OP, but I never do it because it's A DRAG to grind the levels) you work your way up from "a guy on a horse" to, eventually as the ultimate kinda win condition, the god emperor of the whole gameboard but you never control more than one party on the big map It's always just the one party, so you travel between the stuff you want to do The sieges are also kinda fun, but honestly they got kinda stale for me because of how formulaeic they are there's not a whole lot of room for interesting decision making when you're defedning or attacking a wall, you know You just gotta go head to head
S C
I guess technically if you defended and had full control you could pull ALL the forces back and set up a killbox for the enemies to filter into in manageable numbers, but I don't think you ever have that level of control in defenses
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
they should add a weird sewer opening underneath the wall that an orc can run into with dynamite strapped to him and blow it all up or an exhaust port that leads to the main engine
S C
you don't get the orc, but you do get a BIG BATTERING RAM, which is pretty damn cool
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
>The Deeping Wall was a long, twenty foot-high wall of stone which formed part of the Hornburg, the fortress of Rohan in Helm's Deep.
>It was possibly the most important part of the Fortress of the Hornburg, stretching from the keep to the end of the opening to the Deep. It also was the most vulnerable, for contained within the wall was a culvert which served as a drain for the water that would accumulate from the steady flow of the Deeping-stream.

infinite chess is a bit broken because all the bishops rooks and queens are insanely OP having infinite range
S C
not all too disimilar to romancing MacCready pre-patch they fucked up the numbers for his romance perk on release, so instead of giving you like 20% more accuracy in vats, he actually gave you like, 20,000% more accuracy or something This meant, among other things, as long as you could actually SEE an enemy, you could snipe their gun out of their hand... with a mini nuke
S C
actually no, it only counted for heads actually But still, you had 100% chance to hit ANYTHING you had line of sight of the head of no range restrictions
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
they should just limit range to 8 in large format chess tbh its too much otherwise
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\

i mean you could make this definition if you wanted to but why you already can't instantiate one omega cuz its infinite in size

I enjoyed reading your story, it's even elevated anno's mood. Theres always negitive stuff but it's profond when these type of experiances happen and postive energy is generated!
I was there to talk with someone when they were suicidal and they attributed the presence, too extending there mortality and not ending it. So I know the feeling.
I like to be spontaneous when I give speeches. I wrote something this morning but I didn't like it so I talked about something completely different. My only guidance was that it should be about mental health and spirituality.
But the people that invited me know me relatively well so I figure they just wanted me to be myself up there.
It was a lot of fun!!!!!!!

So thanks to zen, I simply don't think about it in ways that will cause anxiety and when anxiety does arise, I just let it go. I can stay totally in the moment. No notes needed.

like the premise is pretty interesting, and overall the story is neat, but there's just so many parts that feel like it was adapted from a manga and didn't understand what was happening in the panels or how quickly it was supposed to happen So you have the both of them chased by A Thing, and then they just stop, while it's mere meters away, to stare at it and exchange dialogue, and after a little while the blonde girl slaps the cute one like "STOP SPACING OUT! WE HAVE TO RUN" You both stopped, for a long time, there was no indication of her being particularly zoned out other than her being the last one the camera was on It's just so shoddy

And then they had 2. And then they had handguns. All this directly following leaving the otherside with no weapons

it's incredible how genuinely OLD Warband's UI feels Like, the inventory is slot based, for one Which is utterly insane when you consider what the game is
For a single-character game like Diablo or something, slotbased inventories make some sense, sure But in Warband, and all the other M&B games really, you're leading an army of like 200 people towards the midgame Nothing stacks So when you raid a village for their sweet, sweet butter, you get a fuckload of individual pieces of butter to slide into your grid Bannerlord's choice to have everything stack and just have it all be weight based was such a massive upgrade, especially for trading-based characters
Despite the old-as-dirt UI though, it's really a solid game even now, even if Bannerlord's easily the superior game Bannerlord can't run on a toaster though, while warband will run just fine if you can install an operating system, more or less
S C
One of the things that really makes Bannerlord have staying power is honestly how differently each monarch acts It's not like they wage war all that differently, themselves, but they have some differences in terms of how they act The Vlandian king basically just hoards all the fiefs for himself, all the fucking time, another follows the will of the council very often, yet another will overrule the council a lot, not always to grab it himself
The gameplay itself is obviously still a big draw, but it's neat how everyone fucking HATES Dertherth because he refuses to give out land

kingdom come deliverance is also a real cool medieval swordfighting game you don't get a posse like in M&B, but the actual combat is pretty fun It's a bit of a shame that the way they made the combat system, technically speaking you should never attack in melee It basically boils down to there being a perfect block riposte, which itself ALWAYS connects if you nail the timing, and the NPCs can also do that As a result, if you attack, you might hit them, you might miss, or you might get hit yourself in a way you can't avoid Meanwhile if they attack, the same thing applies, but even if you fuck up the timing, you still DO actually block, so... optimal combat strategy is to never press m1 because it's a needless risk
And when I say the enemies CAN do that, too, I don't mean like they'll do it every now and then, like a low percent chance It's like 50% every time you hit them they'll at the very least perfect block (riposte is actually a bit tighter timing) which leads into them countering you, which you have to block. Nearly every single fight with more competent enemies almost immediately devolves into like 20 perfect blocks in sequence as you parry each other. And of course, during this, the counter block to one of those attacks, for either one of you, could end up being a riposte I never got good enough to abuse it, but that doesn't mean the enemy isn't, so usually you just exchange attacks like that until the AI ripostes you and you're back to regular fighting again
It's still a lot of fun, but I really do think the game would be a LOT better if they just hadn't added in the ripostes It's a bad mechanic, there shouldn't be a single optimal move for EVERY fight in the game, or at the very least it should involve... attacking Like it shouldn't be suboptimal to swing your sword in a fight, kinda doubly so in a game aiming for "historical accuracy" to some degree, considering blocking shit with your sword was a fucking dipshit idea for obvious reasons
S C
As a result I usually end up just using a mace, though Both because it feels less stupid to parry blows with a mace, you can't "blunt the edge" of a slab of iron on an iron stick And also because as one might expect, swords are actually garbage weapons when you're fighting someone with armor that involves any amount of metal. You're gonna struggle to stab through a full-face covering helmet, but if you just kinda bring a big slab of metal down on their helmet, they're gonna fucking feel it Which the game does account for It's not just stupid for RP reasons to use a sword, they're actually fucking ass against someone wearing plate A mace though? Oh they'll take a beating with that for sure Some of the maces are even kinda sharp as well, with pointy needles and stuff And a mace is no less effective against unarmored opponents, the same logic applies. Bonk them on the head, they're absolutely gonna feel it without a helmet
It's pretty wild how swords have become so iconic when in practical terms, it's one of the worst weapons we've ever come up with There's joints and stuff in armor, sure, but like, unless you spend a LOT of time practicing, you're not hitting that shit Meanwhile you give anyone a mace and the primary thing separating a victory from death is gonna be their ability to land a hit at all, no precision strictly necessary. Just fucking wail on the mfer
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
the purpose of a sword is not to actually kill the enemy, but to have fun and look cool doing it
Anno
Swords were symbols of wealth and nobility, primarily Also, you have to remember in incredibly wealth and class disparity societies like feudal kingdoms, owning a good plate of armor was reserved for those who hadmoney Even a chain shirt was relatively expensive A good, well-maintained sword was more than capable of taking out a leather jerkin
Honestly, a sword was probably more effective for mowing down peasant conscripts than a mace, since one of the things leather does better for protecting against tha metal is blunt impacts
S C
well you're not wrong there, armor was expensive as fuck too though, spears were kinda what most armies fielded from what I've come to understand Primarily because you don't really gotta spend too much time teaching the conscripted peasant how to use that one Kinda the same reason bows went out of fashion almost immediately once crossbows showed up
S C
I suppose it did have its uses in that way, yeah though I dunno how much time nobility actually spent like, in the thick of it during battle I'd imagine they took a backline, general type role for the most part For one it's a lot safer, and also they're gonna be the only ones with the education to even larp at tactics
Anno
Also, if a peasant was going to own any kind of metal armour, it was incredibly likely to be a leather-padded metal cap, which is probably your best bet of surviving mace strike Going with a weapon which is designed to slice at unarmored soft bits would potentially be more practical Plus a lot of "knightly" swords were designed to double as a blunt weapon if necessity required it That's the practical reason behind sword pommels, so you could pistol whip your target if slashing them wasn't a good choice
>>1121640 Higher nobility, probably not But a lot of petty nobility would have likely rode into battle with their men, either because they didn't have a sizable army under their command or lacked the logistics to order them from a distance There's plenty of historical records of nobility being captured or even slain in the midst of combat, which couldn't happen if they were hiding out in a camp away from the actual fighting
S C
I'd imagine it's still also effective to just slap the side of the blade at the target I mean it's still a heavy piece of metal
S C
part of it would probably also be to curry favor and make a name for yourself, like if you're a 4th born son or something you don't have a lot of other stuff actually going for you so you kinda gotta yolo
Anno
Definitely And also we look back on feudal conflicts through a modern lens of war, but in the time, there definitely was, for people who cared about honour (Which most nobility made a lifestyle), a requirement to lead, not order, your people to victory Like if we jump across the world to Japan, samurai culture heavily emphasized victory through combat, and failing to do so made you inferior
S C
I actually also always found the whole "marrying for political alliances" thing to be a bit weird, honestly Like in concept I get it, you care about your daughter, you marry her into another lord's family or even another kingdom, you have a somewhat vested interest in not fucking with them But also, it won't deter the thirst for conquest all that much either way, after a while it's only relation by blood and it's not like you talk on the phone or something
S C
And when you add in that the nobility itself was often spared the sword when possible and they hadn't done something heinous, it's not like your married off daughter is likely to die, especially if you guys are the ones invading, y'know?
I'd imagine any conscripted peasant who actually harmed even an enemy lord outside combat or direct orders would get utterly removed from history
S C
Cause sure, they're the enemy But they ARE nobility
Anno
>>1121646 Turning your married-off daughter into a political hostage was absolutely an implicit threat of political marriage
S C
Oh, yeah I guess there's that option too Its' not that your actions will hurt her, it's that your actions will make the other guy hurt her Or, at least, the implicit threat exists
S C
I suppose there's also the element of like If you're a small noble with little power, and someone above you marries their daughter to you, that shows a lot of trust from them towards you, and you'll be very positively disposed towards them and help them cause they kinda went "hey, you're a small boy, but I got you"
Anno
It also changes from region to region, but depending on inheritance laws, if things don't go well for the bigger guy who married his daughter into your family, your family might end up ruling that bigger guy's territory There's plenty of situations in feudal history where that happened
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
construction worker rolls into the tiny diner staggering orders a spring roll, two monsters and a coffee i hope they're for the group otherwise thats an insane order
S C
>>1121652 I'd guess the coffee is for now, and the monsters are for throughout the day?
S C
>>1121651 Right, that too, kinda expanding on the point that you've been shown a lot of goodwill, potentially with real econ consequences down the line So you're gonna be someone they can call on if they need a favor or more men or something
And since they're Beefier than you are, the potential of you actually harming their daughter is fairly diminished, unless they're a foreign kingdom Cause you may have their daughter, but they've got the damn hierarchy, and the hierarchy tends to win
Anno
Well, in the case of inheritance, it's more of a, if you're a pretty noble and your superior wants to marry his daughter to you, you want that, because it potentially gives you a legal way of acquiring his lands if things go ass-up for him War is messy, expensive, and generally not a good thing Outside
Anno
of conquest-obsesses societies, and even inside them to a degree, war was something to be avoided at all costs, lest you're honourbound to participate in it (and most nobility took honour very seriously) So a legal way to gain land (which may be assisted by various shadowy machinations and plots) was usually far more preferable than figuring out how to conquer someone
