they were all done just copy/pasting the single 1-dimensional waveform which is just a sound timeline, in Renoise
i can do a whole lot more stuff by slicing the original sample into different instruments and using the tracker to lay out different tracks for each sound, then modulate them as needed so that you have spatial difference between sounds and effects and harmony and shit
but this is just all clustered on top of each other with no way to measure out rhythm ot maintain any time signature for the beat or control anything really just copying waveform chunks and pasting it back in it was really fun in a schizophrenic kind of way

I think some contextual information here is that samurai were effectively a "nobility" class above the average peasant serf during the time of feudal Japan Not that it makes anything better, but I think framing this as a historical abuse of power by a noble upon the powerless lower class has it seem ... less absurd? than just the idea of some random bloke going after other random blokes for the sake of bloodsport
S C
samurai were in many ways just sorta, unlanded knights, as far as comparisons to European feudalism can go, weren't they?
Anno
Some would've owned land, or had received it as compensation for service to their warlord I do believe even within the class of samurai, there were also varying tiers of subclass where some would of a higher -some would be of a higher class than other samurai But I'm not as well-informed about that inner social structure
>>1110012 I definitely don't know how commonplace it was, just that it wasn't an unheard of notion
S C
Oooh, I actually didn't know they were like, "commonly" landhavers I mean I figured it could happen, but I would have expected that to just be like, maybe one or two of the most trusted and reliable samurai, less as a result of their class, and more just their personal relationship with the big cheese
I guess even if they're not "technically" the owners of the land in question, being assigned as the sort of "caretaker" of a landmass, to defend it and maintain order, yadda yadda, would also come with a position that very much approaches ownership. One would imagine you'd be allowed and expected to extract the taxes, and take some of it for yourself as a sort of wage, and you'd be the head decision maker for local issues Well, assuming samurai were given such positions without ceasing to be samurai
Anno
Well that's where the idea of the samurai being a social class and not a job title is important In that sense they are closer to the European notion of knights You could still be a samurai even if you no longer actually fought in battles
S C
Well of course, that's kinda what I mean by "ceasing to be samurai" Like, at \\ depending on the task given, it might be that elevates you statuswise to a different class
Kinda like how in the mafia, once you're "made" you're not a grunt anymore, and the ones who still are don't get to ever question you Similar thing might happen, you're elevated to like, an equivalent of a duke or something Sure you're still expected to answer the call when you're called for your samurai functions, but you're not "a samurai" anymore in terms of social status
Anno
If we're trying to establish parallels between the two systems, the equivalent of dukedom would probably be the daimyo, who would have been the local warlord who ruled over a province Historically, during the Sengoku Era, there would have been several dozen warlords all establishing their own territory, and the infamous Oda Nobunaga was one such daimyo who through successful battle, started eating up various other provinces of other daimyo If he hadn't died before his goal would have been completed, he could have likely called himself shogun, the ruler above the daimyo, after uniting the all of Japan (or at least its main island or two) under his banner This would have been close to being a king, but it would have been made different because of the nature of the divine emperor who also existed Not that it actually seems like the imperial family did much ruling, outside of a few outlying cases
All that to say, the samurai class who were granted control over land would have been closer to like, petty lords, landed knights who had maybe a small estate and surrounding village or two who they presided over
S C
Actually maybe I'm just confused about the european system, too I thought it went like Monarch -> Some Kind Of Noble -> Duke Which might be mistaken That middle spot might be the duke
S C
Is there actually some like, genuine distinction between emperor and king, or is it mostly just an etymological thing stemming from translating foreign terms for The King as Emperor, possibly just to avoid offense? Is it the same position in essence, but the system below them differ?
Anno
Really hard to say, because even the nature of empire changes from Europe to China to Japan Or well, I think all the systems differ from one another Imperial China was a heavily decentralized system of extremely effective bureaucracy and the person in the position of emperor having to ensure all the various provinces kept to themselves, or else some upstart from another province would start collecting forces and make a run at open rebellion to put themselves and their family in the position of emperor I think Imperial China spent more time breaking apart and collecting its pieces than expanding, at least after it reached the extent of its territory European empires, at least during the feudal eras of the Medieval and supposed Renaissance eras, were more centralized, with the chain of command being as narrow as possible, and there weren't as many internal forces that could cause upheaval and rebellion. They really were, for the most part, "A king but bigger", as opposed to the Chinese emperor
On the other hand, the Japanese imperial family seems to have never really done much actual ruling, even into the country's further history I think as I recall, they had once controlled the majority of the territory of the main island of Japan, or were assumed to, before the notion of actual like, bureacratic governorship was even an idea in Japan And over time they wrote the history to connect their bloodline to the mythlogical gods who first descended from their godly realm to the mortal realm and mingled with the people there, to give themselves that link to divinity you see in so many royal and imperial bloodlines And at some point they chose to relinquish actual governance to the daimyo and shogun, who, and this is the part that always confuses me, were more than happy to fund their shut-in noble lifestyles and let them consider themselves the divine rulers of the country, when it was really the shogun and daimyo who did all the actual ruling and provincial conflict
S C
I guess one sorta difference is that at least in terms of how it's used Kingdoms, with a King, are often at least content with simply having its chunk of land, and while it'll do war for more land, it's not like, a primary preoccupation While empires, with an emperor, tend to be very much geared towards expansion and seizing control of Everything
Like the Roman Empire wasn't static across time at all, it expanded and ate more and more While like, Sweden or Denmark or even England really, weren't particularly concerned with covering Everything, even if they did and do love their territories and colonies
S C
That and I suppose the title of "emperor" is not, necessarily, hereditary I mean in practice it probably was in large part, but "king" is basically exclusively hereditary barring civil war\a coup The first born son of the current king will always be the next king, unless something unforeseen happens With emperors, that's not NECESSARILY the case, at least as I understand it
Anno
>>1110019 I think the difference between the Roman empire and the European countries going into the colonial era, is that the Romans did have a real tech advantage over a lot of the surrounding cultures And organizational one too, really. In the immediate geographical neighbourhood of Europe, there weren't really any other cultures who could field as many well-geared soldiers in as organized a fashion as the Romans could I don't think the Persian empire had recovered from being broken by Alexander the Great either, so those territories were small states relatively easy for the conquering by the larger Roman army as well
For the European kingdoms going into the colonial era, they had all for the most part equalized in technological capacity and military organization, and none of them really had a population permitting a fieldable army that could overwhelm by sheer numbers Which means that conquering other European nations was usually going to be pretty damn hard Why spend all the effort trying to do that when you could just sail for a few months and go find a bunch of land where the only human residents were still using stone and some times rudimentary metal weapons, and didn't have centralized governance that could call upon an army to stand in your way?

why do antiparticles exist that's so interesting that you can just annihilate an electron by bombarding it with a positron the world seems so stable and yet it's just waiting to cancel itself out given the right mix
more like im too tired to believe my first instinct answer is correct
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
i mean sayin 'to conserve charge' doesn't really answer anything it just creates more questions
Rei !p8eYCadcMo
well in the context most of the work people do on earth with antimatter it's either the production of matter anti matter pairs or pair annihilation you can't just convert energy directly into producing one electron and nothing else you gotta make a position too cause with energy, let's say E E = mc2 so E/c2 = m let m be the mass of two electrons you start out with total energy E and total charge C = 0 you end with an electron with mass m/2 and a positron with m/2 and charge C = +1 -1= 0 you can't make anything out of nothing charge is a conserved quantity
Rei !p8eYCadcMo
I'm not gonna get into the stuff about "Why is there more matter than anti matter" cause I dont know but I feel conserved quantities and symmetry are profound on their own
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
okay but like E=mc2 is just a model like doing an algebra on it is a justification for a theory but the basis for the universe isn't made out of models ah well that just becomes ineffable
anyway a theory that is based more on like why is there stability and not chaos which kinda follows from the anthropic principle, really you would need a baseline amount of stability for life to exist
Mahou Shoujo Marsh-chanRei !p8eYCadcMo
>>1110118 we wouldn't be using the math we use in physics if it didn't describe the universe
it's like descriptive yeah but like the math equations come from the patterns we see in the living matter i'm talkin like >>1110121 brother i feel like anthropic principle is like an introductory textbook read on Why Are We Here (For Atheists) 101 or maybe Stats 101 as the baseline bayesian princple
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
anyway that's like a fair way to describe constraints in the observed universe given we take einstein's theory as accepted knowledge then you can make claims about various equalities but i'm lookin for more than an equality like yea it holds and that's sufficient for a theory, but it's one piece of a puzzple
anyway i guess i feel like it makes sense in a "stable" universe for charge to basically cancel itself out if you had way too many positrons or positively charged particles in the universe, that might throw everything off idk don't really know enough about the fabric of space time to say
Rei !p8eYCadcMo
it holds maybe I'm too tired for this conversation
Rei !p8eYCadcMo
I just feel like a lot of philosophy/physics questions people ask >>1110123 if some matter somehow lost 1*108 of it's electrons (very small number of electrons) it would violently explode isn't that neat?

Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
you know room temperature solid matter exists, water doesn't boil photons don't randomly appear from nowhere human scale stuff
Rei !p8eYCadcMo
oh you mean like on earth?
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
yeah that's what i meant by our level of abstraction our particular spot on the metre scale
Rei !p8eYCadcMo
actually we do have photons randomly appear from nowhere and its a very important part of how electromagnetic for es interact inside matter
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
i also wonder like is there a bottom to the ladder scale is it just atoms and then subatomic particles and so on till quarks and just minecraft bedrock past there
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
>>1110134 i mean are they coming from nowhere or from some kind of atomic transformation
Rei !p8eYCadcMo
interactions between charged particles is there truly a nowhere in our universe?
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
i mean energy is not created like it's comin out of something
Rei !p8eYCadcMo
even the vacuum of space has energy it's a sort of side effect of the uncertainty principle that we can't know there's not electrons somewhere and uh they can pop into existence and have negative energy sort of so there will be two wbose total energy is 0 and because energy is a cosnerved quantity its "allowed" but quantum field theory is really complicated and I dont understand much kf it myself I think there was a good explanation of virtual particles in one lf Hawking's books
Samu /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
from what i know about quantum fields it's like a quantized well of energy like you fill it up and then it emits some photons and falls back down

maybe I should rewatch Uma Musume s1 before catching up on the later seasons. Its been a hot minute. I'm worried I won't be able to keep up with the intricate plot and complex subtleties if i don't remember bits of the first part.
