thankfully, I have a lot of time on my hands I really feel like I read painfully slow since starting this series, probably because it's been a long time since last I read anything other than a VN, and they're a lot easier to go through even if they're a lot longer
The worldbuilding in honzuki really is great though Even bits and pieces of noble culture are justified in ways that aren't merely "producing an air of being above the commoners" It's not entirely clear whether stuff like Myne's emotional instability leading her to lashing out and crushing people, or even the crushing itself, is a common concern among nobles, though. As far as I remember, she's the only one who's been shown to actually do that, so I'm not entirely sure if that's just having mana, or having the devouring But if it's a common concern, it definitely makes sense for all nobles to have it drilled into their head to never lose control of their own emotions from an early age, even though it already obviously makes sense because well, they're nobles, I'm pretty sure this is part and parcel for all fantasy and even non-fantasy medieval works, nobles always carrying themselves with grace and stoicism But the added bit with mana makes it all a lot more interesting
Though, I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this whole world effectively being hardcoded into having two classes of human being, one being entirely reliant on the other just to survive at all, and the other not only being the granter of life, but also absurdly powerful and unassailable I doubt the story's ever going to touch on or shake that up, but I'd love it if that was at least something that came up, a way to reform society so the two classes were at least on a path to equalizing to a level approaching our current situation on earth
Love the story either way though, I'm just too politicspilled not to have thoughts like that fly through my head while reading anything like this

I actually think the narrative arc is kind of moving towards class shake up, at least from what I've seen from the anime and what I know of history Myne's push to produce a printing press is going to have a big impact on the capacity for the non-noble class to gain autonomy and organize, and the storage and transference of information will accelerate other technology Like if she ever even considers introducing gunpowder to this world, the noble all get a time bomb on how long they get to remain comfortable in their seat of magical power
Hm, of course to some degree you're definitely right. I mean just historically and intuitively, the printing press and increasing literacy really, really kicked shit into motion for us, and it's unquestionable that Myne's already started making a lot of changes to class dynamics by her very presence and insistence on various things. I don't really think even guns and bombs would allow for a violent shakeup though, I'm pretty sure this is the kind of world where The Liberals Are Right and change for real has to come top-down, just due to how ridiculously easy it is for even a weak noble to deal with commoners. Benno was worried about Myne when she left the temple in her robes because she could have been kidnapped, but that's only because 1. she didn't have a ring and 2. other nobles could be in the city and they obviously had some issues with her mere existence in the first place
After all these things have happened, it's very clear he would never have such concerns now. In fact I'd argue he was outright incorrect when he said nobles travel by carriage for safety in the lower cities. If safety was their concern, they'd be using high beasts, and they really, really have absolutely no reason to even bring a guard with them as far as threats from commoners go.
Though, it's hard to say how they'd fare against like, a musket, admittedly An actual fucking gun might at least level the playing field against lay and maybe mednobles

From what I've seen, the control of magic is a slow thing, aside from temperamental outbursts like what Myne does Which is also because of her abnormal mana levels anyway Any kind of weapon that can be pointed at someone and shoot them dead before they can even utter the first elements of a spell or prayer is going to balance the playing field

Though worth noting that kids with the devouring aren't just born with magic, they're also born with way way more magic than they can handle in the first place. Even noble kids would probably croak without help, but devouring kids really are imbalanced. Myne though, is again an extreme outlier, both for surviving and for the sheer amount of mana. Even other devouring kids that get taken in by nobles rarely ever reach her fucking insane manapool. My personal theory is it is that way because she actually had enough that it did outright kill RealMyne, at which point the adult mind of our Myne entered and was able to do something about it just due to being a bit more lucid than an actual 4 or 6 year old could on their own, even without really knowing what was happened. The merge might have just outright increased the capacity even, 2 souls in one body and all that.
It'll definitely be interesting where this all goes though

Oh and this is something I remembered thinking about in earlier seasons But the implication as I remember it was that it's not just nobles who are born with mana (hell, Myne is a clear example), but that the nobler classes are the ones with resources to help children survive the difficult years early on and be able to stave off the devouring As quality of life improves for serf classes, they might see non-nobles who are capable of using magic, which would also be an express ticket to class upheaval
Though, RealMyne really is a bit of a mystery for reasons that come up very late into the story, like in book 13 or something But I won't go into details there. Suffice to say, I think there was something about her even prior to our Myne coming in that was pretty extraordinary, even for someone with the devouring.
Also this isn't a problem to mention because the anime already covered it, but even though commoners can be born with the devouring, they all bite the dust sooner or later without ever learning to use or get rid of their mana without nobles stepping in, so for such a shift to occur, a noble willing to Really piss off the rest of the nobility would need to do something drastic. Freida and Myne were saved from certain, agonizing death by the guildmaster's connections, but that's a big outlier. Most just succumb to fevers before they're even baptised, after all, nobody even knowing what's wrong in the first place. The lower cities are hives of bacteria and other nasty shit after all, it's not gonna raise too many eyebrows for the occasional kid to just be prone to sickness and ultimately die after a few years.
It's not entirely unthinkable though, I suppose It's just fairly unlikely for a noble to go against the ironclad rule of magic being noble territory without a sizable kickback. God knows how the guildmaster coaxed someone into it, I'd imagine he offered up more than just the gold and his granddaughter. Though, Ehrenfest has mana issues, so maybe offering her up was enough to move the needle.
I hope you end up reading the books sometime though, it'd be a lot of fun to have someone to discuss it with without having to be so vague to avoid spoiling stuff. Even the stuff I've already said might give some of it away, though it might not be apparent until what it would spoil actually happens, so I think it's safe. I've just become infatuated with this story, and it's not like I've got a large circle of people who read light novels, most of the people I know don't even watch anime unless I highly recommend it, or someone else did, or it happened to immediately catch their interest.
And even though I hope the anime eventually covers the whole story, I'm pretty sure that's gonna take a very, very long time, considering so far it's at like... book 6 In contrast I'm reading nr 15 now, and I think like 29 are planned
